LONGUEUR DES LIGNES DE CHEMIN DE FER EXPLOITIES.

SOURCES: 1. Rapports des administrations de chemins de fer;

2. Annuaires statistiques ou autres documents officiels;

LENGTH OF RAILWAY LINES OPERATED.

SOURCES: (1) Reports of Railway Administrations; (2) Statistical Year-Books and other official documents. (3) In a few cases, the " Eisenbahnarchiv" and the " Bulletin de l'Union Internationale des chemins de fer " Owing to the considerable differences in the make-up of the figures in different countries, they are not at all homogeneous, and can in many cases be accepted only with the utmost reserve. This applies more particularly to most of the Latin-American countries, where the nature of the figures is frequently unspecified. This very seriously affects the comparability of the figures. As a general rule the figures represent the length of track being operated at the end of the business year. In some cases, however, the average length of track operated, calculated on the basis of the length of track operated on each day throughout the year, is given. The real length (or length owned) is shown only in a few cases. The real length includes sections which are not operated, and sections which are operated by other administrations. The operated length does not include sections leased, but does include sections belonging to other enterprises over which the enterprise concerned has running-powers. As lines are sometimes operated jointly by several enterprises, the figures may come out too high if the sections operated by all the enterprises are added together. This applies, for instance, to the United States, with their large number of railway companies. As a general rule, the figures apparently include narrow-gauge lines, but do not include branch lines, sidings, and purely industrial lines. In some cases they include even small local lines ; in others they cover only the main lines, or - very frequently - only the lines worked by the State. Even in countries where all the railways are said to be operated by the State, the total figure for local privately-owned lines is sometimes unexpectedly high. Every endeavour has been made to arrange the figures on a comparable basis, but they will not be of much use for purposes of international comparison unless reference is made in each case to the notes below. The figures represent State-owned lines and privately-owned lines 1 Since 1920, the end of March of the following year. open to traffic. The figures for lines actually operated are slightly different. 2 Average length of track operated. 3 End of March of the following year. 4 Main and minor lines. 5 Almost entirely narrow-gauge. 6 Steam railways, State or privately owned. The length of electrified track is insignificant.
7 June, 1914.

Length of track owned. The length operated was 415,593 Km. in 1924. 9 Including the industrial lines of the United Fruit Company, which amount to about 170 Km.

11 The figures, which cover both State-owned and privately-owned lines, include branch lines and sidings, and are consequently too high in relation to the figures for other countries. 12 1924 and 1925, June. Total length of State-owned and privately-owned lines, including narrow-gauge lines. Excluding port lines and minor and industrial lines, which had a total track length of about 2,600 Km. in 1925.

Total length of State-owned and privately-owned lines, including local lines. Excluding certain minor and purely local lines.

The figures for private lines are only approximate. The total length of all the systems is estimated at from 11,000 to 12,000 Km. 28 Including narrow-gauge lines. 19 1913-1924, average length of track operated, including privately-owned lines and about 120 Km. of narrow-gauge track, but not including interurban tramways (about 3,300 Km. in 1924). 20 Japan proper. Excluding minor lines and tramways (2,365 Km. in 1913). The figures for 1923 were: Korea 2,409; Formosa 2829 ; Karafuto 209; and South Manchuria 1,111 Km. 21 State lines, more than half of which is narrow-gauge track. 22 June of the following year. 23 Total length of main and minor lines (" Haupt- und Nebenbahnen "), including narrow-gauge lines and lines operated by the Franco-Belgian Regie; excluding light railways of purely local importance (" Kleinbahnen "), which had a track length of 10,900 Km. in 1913. The 1913 figure relates to the old territory. The figures represent the real length of the main 24 In 1921 excluding the Burgenland, for which the 1922 figure is 314 Km. and minor lines (" Haupt- und Lokalbahnen "), and not the length of track operated. The average length operated in 1913 was 19,265 for the State and 3,966 for the private lines. The differences between the real and the operated track are for the other years insignificant. The State lines include private lines run by the State. Light railways of purely local importance (" Kleinbahnen") are excluded; their length was 784 Km. in 1913, and 399 Km. in 1924. 25 State railways, including narrow-gauge track (352 Km. in 1923). The length of the privately33 State system, including narrow-gauge lines, which had a track-length of 693 Km. in 1925. owned lines was 162 Km. in 1924. 34 State system, including narrow-gauge lines (424 Km. in 1925). 35 Including local, cantonal, and minor lines. 36 State railways only. Before 1921 excluding Danzig, before 1922 excluding Upper Silesia. The approximate 1913 figure for the present territory was 12,500 Km. 37 Including narrow-gauge lines, the length of which for 1924 was: State-owned, 144 Km.; privately owned, 476 Km. 38 From 1913 to 1923, March of the following year. '9 Including Asiatic territories. October 1st of each year. 40 Including narrow-gauge lines (in 1925: State-owned, 2,312; privately owned, 942). The 1913 figure relates to Serbia only. 41 Total length of State-owned and privately-owned lines, whether main or local lines ; the latter are all privately owned. 42 Total length of State-owned and privately-owned lines, including rack-and-pinion railways, but not including funiculars or tramways. 43 Including narrow-gauge lines (356 Km. in 1925). 4 State-owned: end of June; privately owned: end of December. NOTES AU TABLEAU 82: NOMBRE DE T]ELEGRAMMES ENVOYES ET NOMBRE DE CONVERSATIONS TELEPHONIQUES. NOTES TO TABLE 82: NUMBER OF TELEGRAMS DESPATCHED AND NUMBER OF TELEPHONE CALLS.

OF THE TELEGRAPHIC UNION (Berne) ; some, however, come from other official sources, such as year-books and officialBUREAU reports.
