Foodlabelscarryusefulinformationtohelpyoumakechoicesaboutfood.Thefoodlabelwilltell youifthefoodcontainsanadditivethatyoumaywanttoavoid.Thenutritioninformationpanel helpsyoutocomparethenutrientprofileofsimilarproductsandchoosetheonethatsuitsyour needs.
Food additives
AllfoodadditivesmusthaveaspecificuseandtheymustbeassessedandapprovedbyFood StandardsAustraliaNewZealand(FSANZ).Theymustbeusedinthelowestpossiblequantitythat willachievetheirpurpose.Foodadditivesaregivenintheingredientlistaccordingtotheirclass, whichisfollowedbyachemicalnameornumber.Forexample: Colour(tartrazine) Colour(102)

Theclaimsnocholesterol,lowcholesterolorcholesterolfreeonfoodsderivedfrom plants,likemargarineandoil,aremeaninglessbecauseallplantfoodscontainvirtuallyno cholesterol.However,somecanbehighinfatandcancontributetoweightgainifusedtoo generously. Ifanitemclaimstobe93percentfatfree,itactuallycontains7percentfat,butitlooks somuchbettertheotherway.
