Assessment 1: Characteristics of Science (Intro to science. Scientific method, lab safety, metrics, and metric conversions) Journal 1

Unit: Plot and Conflict Learning Target: By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poems at the high end of the grades 6-8 text complexity band independently and proficiently Identify and analyze the stages of plot Identify and analyze types of conflict Opening Activity: Silent Sustained Reading (15 minutes) Collect the SSR Independent Reading Project annotations to collect data. Library visit to collect desired novels or to read Reading log and 112 pages due. 224 pages will be due on 9/20. Daily lesson: What makes a story worth telling? Preview of Unit 1 goals for literary analysis, reading, writing, grammar, speaking, listening, and vocabulary. Introduction to essential questions and learning targets. Readers Workshop: Plot and Conflict pages 24-26 Closing Activity: Introduce the left side of the interactive notebook and the corresponding homework assignment. HW: Interact with the class material regarding plot and conflict by creating/finding pictures, cartoons, songs, poems, quotes, etc.

HW: Students should finish all work during class. Immigration story is homework if not finished during class. Unit: Civics Learning Targets: Students will understand the importance of the Supreme Court in relation to the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Students will understand 5 court cases, which protect their rights in school. Academic Vocabulary: Civics Daily lesson: The Constitution and You: 5 Supreme Court Cases Every Teen Should Know Closing: Answer follow-up questions, class review and discussion. Turn in follow-up answers. HW: None
