George 1 Emmett George AP Biology 13-14 July 27th, 2013 Introduction Letter My name is Emmett George and I will

be a senior for the upcoming 2013-2014 school year at Freedom High School. Throughout high school I have been mainly interested in boosting my science and math profile for my applications when applying to college, as I am interested in pursuing a Biomedical Engineering or Biochemical Engineering degree. Possible college choices include: Virginia Tech, University of Virginia, University of Notre Dame, Johns Hopkins University, University of Chicago, and Yale University. Freshman year I took Earth Science honors with Mrs. Stone. Sophomore year I took Biology honors with Mrs. Infante and Chemistry with Mrs. Crumbliss. Junior year I took Physics with Mr. Young and AP Chemistry with Mrs. Gulden. This year I am taking AP Biology, AP Physics, and Environmental Science. Extracurricular activities that I take part in include: National Honors Society, Science National Honors Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Latin Honors Society, Cross Country, Swimming, and Track and Field. Other activities at home range from watching sports on TV, reading, and even participating with my local Boy Scout troop as one of the leading Eagle Scouts. Job experience throughout my high school career started out with odd-jobs for local neighbors, then turned into me becoming a lifeguard after freshman year and soon after becoming the manager of lifeguarding operations at my local pool for this

George 2 summer. Swim lessons has also been an on-the-side job that I teach throughout all months of the year. During my sophomore year honors biology class with Mrs. Infante, I enjoyed the small class size of about 18 students, which helped for faster learning and more help given to each pupil. All the information we learned throughout the year was mostly new to me and interested me further into pursuing a deeper knowledge of biology and chemistry. This desire for further knowledge into both fields led me to taking AP Chemistry last year and then the pursuit of AP Biology this year. The labs from honors biology remain somewhat fuzzy, but of the ones I remember include: the characteristics of living things, the advancements of biology due to the work of many scientists, differences in animal and plant cells using microscopes, photosynthesis and respiration labs, and the genetic code and its translation. Most of the lab experience I have otherwise is mainly from my two years of chemistry in high school. My experience with equipment in honors biology was mostly microscopes, triple beam balances, syringes, glassware, and one dissection of a frog. In the upcoming year of AP Biology, I am looking forward to learning and building on new and old topics within the course, while also strengthening my interest for the Biomedical or Biochemical engineering fields that I look to pursue in college. I want to gain this beginning knowledge of these degree fields while maybe even being able to test out of freshman biology due to my strong knowledge in the field when coming out of high school. The most anxious part of AP Biology I have for next year is the workload that it will require throughout the school year because of the four other AP classes I am taking and the three varsity sports I compete in throughout the

George 3 course of the school year. Otherwise I hope to have a very successful and learning filled year within the course of AP Biology.
