# Question Paper I #

Year:II

2 Marks 1. Define Stable and Unstable equilibrium (April/May 2005) 2. Define similitude and mention three types of similarity (Nov/Dec 2012) 3. Define sphericity.(Nov/Dec 2003) 4. Define displacement thickness (April/May 2008) 5. Bernoullis Equation ( May/June 2006) 8 Marks 6. a) Compare and distinguish between Rotameter and Venturimeter (May/June 2009) (OR) b) A pipe conveying a discharge of 0.3m3/s enlarges in the area suddenly from 0.15m2 to 0.6m2. If the pressure of water in the smaller part of pipe line is 100Kpa. Calculate Head loss due to sudden enlargement. (April/May2008)

16 Marks 7. a) Water with a kinematic viscosity of 10-6 m2/s flows through a 20cm diameter pipe. What would be the velocity of water have to be for the flow of water to be dynamically similar to the flow of oil (its kinematic viscosity 10 -5 m2/sec) flowing through the sane pipe at a velocity of 2m/s. (OR) b) The inlet and throat diameters of a horizontal venturimeter are 30 cm and 10 cm respectively. The liquid flowing through the meter is water. The pressure intensity at inlet is 13.734N/cm2 while the vacuum pressure head at the throat is 37 cm of mercury. Find the rate of flow. Assume that 4% of the differential head is lost

between the inlet and the throat. Find also the value of C d for the venturimeter. ( April/May2010) 8. a) Discuss the losses due to sudden contraction in pipes and how can they be minimized. (OR)

b) Explain the fluid flow (Concepts) through packed beds and fluidized beds.(Nov/Dec 2010)
