WTF? CONNECTION TIMED OUT! Hi, I can not send mails to any recipients. For any recipient throws the same log I've outlined below. /var/log/exim4/mainlog 2011-04-06 09:47:58 1Q7S9O-0001gL-CE <= root [at] midominio U=root P=local S=361 2011-04-06 09:51:09 1Q7S9O-0001gL-CE ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM [74.125.159.27] Connection timed out 2011-04-06 09:54:18 1Q7S9O-0001gL-CE ALT2.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM [74.125.113.27] Connection timed out 2011-04-06 09:57:27 1Q7S9O-0001gL-CE ALT1.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM [74.125.91.27] Connection timed out 2011-04-06 10:00:36 1Q7S9O-0001gL-CE ASPMX5.GOOGLEMAIL.COM [74.125.157.27] Connection timed out 2011-04-06 10:03:45 1Q7S9O-0001gL-CE ASPMX3.GOOGLEMAIL.COM [72.14.213.27] Connection timed out 2011-04-06 10:06:54 1Q7S9O-0001gL-CE ASPMX2.GOOGLEMAIL.COM [74.125.43.27] Connection timed out 2011-04-06 10:10:03 1Q7S9O-0001gL-CE ASPMX4.GOOGLEMAIL.COM [209.85.229.27] Connection timed out 2011-04-06 10:10:03 1Q7S9O-0001gL-CE == usuario [at] dominio R=dnslookup T=remote_smtp defer (110): Connection timed out 2011-04-06 10:10:03 1Q7S9O-0001gL-CE ** usuario [at] dominio: retry timeout exceeded 2011-04-06 10:10:03 1Q7SUl-0001gz-4X <= <> R=1Q7S9O-0001gL-CE U=Debian-exim P=local S=1199

Have you ever been able to send out from this IP address or has this just suddenly happened after a configuration change? From what little I've seen so far, you probably have a firewall between your email server and the rest of the internet. The use of selfip.net leads me to believe the IP address is probably in a residential range which the ISP believes shouldn't be emitting email. What happens when you try to telnet to port 25 on any of those hosts

from the mail server? How about port 587 since you look to be sending to gmail? Your ISP mail server would also be another good place to send mail from.

Additional helpful tool: tcptraceroute "tcptraceroute gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com 25" will tell you at which hop the problem is. S -Sig lost. Core dumped.

Re: connection timed out [In reply to ] Hi, sorry for the capitalization of the issue. I could never send emails since I installed exim always throw the same log. My ip is dynamic so use DynDNS (midominio.selfip.net). Here is the tcptraceroute: server: ~ # tcptraceroute in.l.google.com gmail-smtp-25 traceroute to gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com (74.125.159.27), 30 hops max, 40 byte p ackets 1 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1) 2,140 ms 2,268 ms 2,426 ms 2*** 3*** 4*** 5*** 6*** 7***

You can confirm this my tsharking your outer-world interface on 192.168.1.1 for "tcp and port 25" while trying tcptraceroute again. I that case, you should yell at your firewall admin for dropping those packets and not putting out an ICMP port-unreachable or a TCP-RST. If packets are visible on that device, then the first hop i.e. your provider drops them without returning a proper ICMP port-unreachable or TCP-RST. In that case, you should yell at them. Gre, Sven. -Sig lost. Core dumped.

I would suspect his ISP blocks port 25. That is very common for a normal consumer dynamic IP service. Even if he got port 25 unblocked, many servers block IPs belonging to dynamic servers anyway. To CyberMauher: If you want to run a mail server that's going to be accepted by the other servers it sends to, then get your own domain and negotiate with your ISP for a fixed IP. That way, you'll be able to run a functioning server on a shoestring. With my fixed IP I get specific permission to run mail and web servers, which is adequate for my needs.
