An up close look at health care careers

Students describe academy experience
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR Eight Germantown High School students got an in-hospital view of healthcare careers during a three week "academy" program over the summer. Several of the students spoke about their experiences during a presentation at the Sept. 9 Germantown School Board meeting. Germantown High School teacher Diane Seramur explained the academy program at Community Memorial Hospital occurred just before school started, and is similar to academy programs the hospital conducts with the Menomonee Falls and Hamilton districts. Under the academy, students go through various rotations of hospital operations. The students then gave final presentations before hospital staff members, parents and high school staff member. The presentations included posters that were created by the students. The Germantown students who participated the academy were Mikayla Bardele, Zachary Daniel, Rachel Fleisner, Sydney Langmann, Kelli Paluch, Katharine Shebesta, Drake West and Angela Wolter. Langmann said she entered the programming thinking she wanted to be a physician's assistant. "Luckily, this experience changed my mind. I now realize I want to be a traveling nurse," she said. Fleisner said she had an idea about becoming a radiologist and decided to keep that choice for her future career field. "I was pleased to find out I could make it through surgery and that was of my highlights," she said. Bardele said she had no idea what her career path would be coming into the program but was attracted to the

program. Shebesta said her poster deals with "nurturing and what I think health care is all about." She said her passion may be in nursing. West's poster compared all aspects of healthcare to a cell, where all different professionals to achieve the goal of helping people. He said wasn't sure of what area of healthcare he wanted to purse prior to participating in the academy. "This helped me narrow it down," he said, adding that his looking to possibly pursuing the field of pathology. All the students thanked the district for the opportunity to participate in the academy. Seramur noted that the students arrived at the hospital at 6:30 a.m. and that Daniel missed football practice to participate in the program. Seramur added that she will begin planning for next year's academy. Seramur explained that the number of students who can participate is limited. The selection process includes having students write two essays and requiring the students to provide two letters of recommendations. Interested students are then interviewed by a district team. County Jobs Now group seeking partnerships with school districts

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The Germantown School Board got a first look at a new effort to make current students aware of employment opportunities in manufacturing and other fields that could be facing a shortage of skilled staff in coming years. Thomas E. Hostad, materials manager at Broan-NuTone in Hartford, spoke to the School Board Sept. 9 on behalf of Washington County Jobs Now, which was formed in April. The group was formed in response to the The Washington County Retirement and Departure Intentions Survey Report which was issued in February. That report was prepared for the Germantown, Hartford Area and West Bend Area chambers of commerce in conjunction with Economic Development Washington County, Moraine Park Technical College, UWWashington County and the UW-Extension. According to the report, 17.5 percent of surveyed employees plan to retire within the next five years, 33.9 percent within the next 10 years and 50.9 percent over the next 15 years. The report states that the figures are "a surprising figure considering historical averages assume one-third of the workforce retiring every 15 years." "In recent years there have been a number of economic setbacks that have caused us to wonder if a shortage in labor supply is still plausible. The Washington County findings demonstrate there is not only a major concern for the supply of skilled workers in the future, but that the shortage is here today and will likely remain a critical issue for the foreseeable future," the report stated. Hostad said he hoped to discuss a collaborative relationship with the Germantown School District and large employers in Washington County. Hostad said there is a "growing gap" forming to the point where projections indicate that 15 years from now there could be 13,000 more jobs in Washington County than people to fill those positions. "We are very concerned about that," Hostad said. He said that employers are having difficulty hiring people because job seekers don't have the skills necessary for the positions. He said the organization is hoping to make students aware of the jobs that are available in Washington County while talking with educators about the curriculum and education that would best prepare students for the workforce. Hostad said that representatives from Washington County Jobs Now has held a few meetings and met with administrators from the largest public school districts in Washington County. All the superintendents at the meeting asked if they could continue to be part of the initiative. "We welcome the insight that they can provide. We think it will provide a great benefit to our work going forward," Hostad said. Hostad added the perception of manufacturing careers "is not the most positive one. Manufacturing has been through some ups and downs in the past 20 years. Many people got frustrated when manufacturing jobs left and went somewhere else in the world. I can tell you many of those are coming back to the US." He added that manufacturing has changed from "big black smokestacks." "One of the things we want to help teachers, staff, parents and young people to understand is that choosing a career in manufacturing doesn't commit a person to standing behind a machine for the next 30 to 35 years, or on an assembly line. There are all sorts of professions you can enter into once you get into a different business," Hostad said. Hostad added that members of Washington County Jobs Now would want to open up their factories to educators and students. Superintendent Jeff Holmes said it "makes a whole lot of sense to be talking at the table with one another." He said he has talked with High School Principal Joel Farren and technology educators instructors who are excited about potential partnerships with manufacturers and small business owners to gain opportunities for students to get skills, training and "soft skills" necessary in the work place. "This could be a catalyst for moving those efforts forward, he said.

Football: Hamilton defense stymies Bulldogs

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR Hamilton's offense put up impressive numbers against West Allis Central Sept. 6, as the Chargers won 49-8. The Chargers ran up 543 yards of total offense to 243 yards for the Bulldogs. Hamilton's Drew Patterson ran 12 times for 232 yards and three touchdowns while Isaiah Webb ran four times for 127 yards and two touchdowns. While Hamilton's offense ran up big numbers, it was the defense that set up several scoring opportunities. Central opened the game with a 7-play drive that started at its own 27-yard line and got as far as the Chargers 32-yard line. However, the drive ended when Hamilton's Will Watkins stepped in front of a Will Konocny pass for the interception. On Hamilton's first play, Patterson ran up the middle for 78-yards at the first score at the 9:09 mark of the game. "They (the defense) always put us in a good position, they really rallied to the ball," Hamilton Coach John Damato said afterward. "They had a great week of practice and it was evident tonight." On offense, Damato said his team went in with a game place that was successfully executed. "We knew we had to go out and play our brand of football. We needed to be clean with what we did in our execution, and the kids did their part," Damato said. Central got as close as the Chargers 29yard line on their next possession but a pass on fourth down was incomplete. Hamilton then mounted a 5-play drive that ended with an 11-yard run by Patterson at the 3:45 mark of the first quarter. After forcing Central to punt on its next possession, Hamilton mounted a 3-play drive that ended with a 31-yard pass play from Mike Barnes to Chris Woodall at the 10:56 mark of the second quarter. Hamilton's final score of the first half came on a 66-yard run by Ty Webb with 38 seconds remaining. Germantown 23, Whitefish Bay 15: The Blue Dukes scored first on a 40-yard pass play from Joe Sherburne to Adam Strehlow at the 5:24 mark of the first quarter. Germantown cut into the lead on a 35-yard field goal by Carter Schmitz at the 11:56 mark of the second quarter. The Warhawks then scored three touchdowns in the second half, taking a 23-15 lead at the 7:04 mark of the fourth quarter when Lincoln Gruber returned a fumble 15 yards. Gruber's score followed two touchdowns by Kyle Theis. Bay rallied, as Turner Demuth and Sherburne connected on a 27-yard pass play with 3:41 left in the game. Bay then recovered on onside kick but Germatnown's defense stopped Bay on four downs. Menomonee Falls 49, West Allis Hale 20: After entering halftime with a 2013 lead, Menomonee Falls scored four straight touchdowns to secure the victory. Christian Almonte scored at the 11:23 mark of the third quarter on a 59-yard run and scored on a 13-yard run, 5 yard run and a 6yard run. Menomonee Falls other scores came on a 12-yard run by Bryce McMurtry at the 9:10 mark of the first quarter, a pass from Adam Vechart to McMurtry at the 9:02 mark of the second quarter and a pass from Vechart to Daniel Dahlke at the 5:09 mark of the second quarter.

Volleyball: Falls beats DSHA, Germantown on top of North Shore

A week of focusing on defense paid off for Germantown Sept. 7, as the Warhkawks won the Laser Invitational. Germantown posted wins over Lake Geneva Badger (25-18, 25-20), Kettle Moraine (25-15, 25-15), Shawano (25-10, 25-14) and New Berlin West (23-25, 25-20, 15-10). Germantown then finished the day with a 25-18, 25-19 win over Whitnall in the title match. Afterward, Coach Ted Gollakner said his team worked on defense all week and wound up having its best offensive performance of the season so far. "Our defense picked up our passing, most of the passes were on target, we had a great kill percentage today," Gollakner said. Gollakner said the emphasis on defense came after the Joust tournament the previous weekend, where the Warhawks played three strong teams in a row and exposed defensive issues. "We're going to continue to work hard on defense the next couple of weeks. We have to get in some offensive schemes as well, but we want to make sure we keep our defense where it's at right now," Gollakner said. The Laser tournament also included a new rotation that was based off performance in the previous week's practice. Germantown stayed on top of the North Shore Conference standings, topping Cedarburg Sept. 10 26-24, 25-21, 26-24. Falls sweeps conference rivals Menomonee Falls followed a championship run at the Mukwonago Becky Werner Invitational Sept. 7 by sweeping Greater Metro Conference rival DIvine Savior Holy Angels (DSHA) Sept. 10. Menomonee Falls defeated DSHA 2520, 25-18, 25-22. At the Mukwonago tournament, Menomonee Falls posted wins over Howards Grove (25-10, 25-19), Oconomowoc (25-15, 25-14), Waukesha North (25-9, 25-14) and Kenosha Bradford (25-12, 25-15). Menomonee Falls then defeated Mukwonago in the final, 25-21, 25-18). Menomonee Falls was ranked first in Division 1 in the most recent Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association poll. Family Pet Clinic provides top-quality care
Family Pet Clinic in Menomonee Falls has been providing top-quality veterinary care to a strong base of loyal and satisfied clients for more than 21 years. I wanted to be a veterinarian since I was a kid; its all I ever wanted to be, said Dr. Scott Fellenz who opened the clinic in 1992. The clinic features four experienced doctors and a knowledgeable staff of receptionists and veterinary assistants. Fellenz is a 1987 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which was the charter class of the new veterinary school. The doctor practiced in Marshfield, Menomonee Falls and New Berlin before deciding to open his own clinic. A Falls resident for the past 24 years, he lives with his wife Arlo, daughters Alexis and Ashtyn, and their family pets. The other doctors are Dr. Kemberlie Anderson, Dr. Carolyn Bernier and Dr. Dara MorrisonSorgenfrei. Fellenz says his own pets are like my kidsthey have greatly enriched my life and the clinic prides itself on protecting the cherished bond between animal and human. Animals are so much more than just pets these days; they bring so many benefits and positive results to owners, and they are often used in hospitals for therapy, said assistant practice manager Jackie Helland. We want our clients to understand that we know how important their pets are to them. They are a member of the family and we give them the same care a human would receive from a doctor. The clinic also makes convenience a priority by offering on-site services such as affordable dentistry, digital X-rays, Ultrasounds, chemotherapy for cancer patients and board certified consultations. We do all these things right here in the clinic instead of having to send the client to a specialist, Helland said. Dr. Fellenz is excited about offering new diagnostic procedures such as rhinoscopy to evaluate nasal cavity problems in dogs and digital dental x-rays. Other services and products offered include: an on-site pharmacy; senior wellness care; prescription food such as Iams, Eukanuba, Hills Science Diet and Waltham; ACL repairs; and microchipping. Also, pet grooming is now available. The continuous pursuit of education by the doctors and staff is another way the clinic stays on the cutting-edge of the field. This enables them to provide a better quality of care to their patients, Helland said. Our doctors attend veterinary seminars and symposiums every year to expand their knowledge base and be able to give clients the most current information, said Helland. And community involvement is key, Helland noted, sharing how the clinic participates in the villages annual pet fair and assists with the high schools Reality Check business class, teaching students the costs and care involved with owning a pet. The clinic also makes regular contributions to the Companion Animal Fund which funds research into diseases such as cancer. Staying involved in the community is very important to us, said Helland, adding that 21 years makes a statement that no verbal proclamation can. I enjoy practicing in this community because of the love people have for their pets, said Fellenz. It just shows the longevity and loyalty our clients have shown us and that we have returned to them, Helland said. Our clients are comfortable with us and can feel confident that their pets will receive the best care and that we will be here for them when they need us. Family Pet Clinic is located at N73 W13583 Appleton Avenuejust west of Highway 41/45 across from St. Anthonys Church. Clinic hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. For more information, one can call the clinic at (262) 253-2255 or visit them at their web site at www.familypetclinic.org or on Facebook.

For all these reasons, the new business is flourishing as the referrals continue to pour in. So far we have not had a customer who has not recommended us to someone else, Klanecky said. Most of our business has come from referrals, and the best thing a customer ever said to me was, It was clear from the very beginning of the project that your only goal was to make us happy. Germantown Library History
In 1962, long-time Germantown resident and former bank president Emma Duerrwaechter surprised the community by donating $30,000 for a building to be used as Germantowns first library. Born in 1881, Emma grew up and attended school in Germantown. She followed her father, Philip G. Duerrwaechter, into the family banking business. In 1923, Emma was voted director and bank president. She was known as Wisconsins First Lady of Banking, and remained president of the bank until 1959. She passed away in 1969 at the age of 87. Germantowns first library was built on land donated by the Germantown Volunteer Fire Department. With Emma Duerrwaechters generous donation, an 1,800 square foot library was built on Park Avenue near Firemans Park. In 1960, Germantowns population was 622. Initially the new library had about 2,000 holding and was open for 20 hours per week. By the late 1970s, the librarys holdings had grown to 19,000 and more space was needed to provide library service for Germantowns growing population. To this day, the former library still stands at Firemans Park and continues to house the offices of the Germantown Volunteer Fire Company. By 1980, Germantowns population had increased dramatically to 10,731. The Duerrwaechter Memorial Library on Park Street had outgrown its 1,800 square foot building. In a 1981 referendum, taxpayers approved an 8,800 square foot library on Village property off Mequon Road. When the new library opened in July of 1982, it had over 19,000 holding and a circulation of 52, 398. Over the next 20 years, the Village of Germantowns population continued to grow, as did library usage. For example between 1987 and 1996, circulation increased by 61%. In the 2000 census, Germantowns population increased to 18,260. By the end of 2001, the librarys holdings had increased to 83,896, and library circulation reached an alltime high of 202,720. In 1998, initial approval was given for a new expandable library facility to be built to the west of the current library. The third Germantown Library building opened in 2002. This 26,000 square foot building can be expanded by 13,000 square feet in the future.

CAREGIVER ELDERLY Alzheimers woman. Germantown No vehicle required. Overnight live-in 24hr shift. Experience Required. Thurs-Sun every other week Mylinda 920980-9199

Dear Dr. Winter, I was wondering if most people are happy with their dentures? Do they eat well? I have 6 veneers that have failed. After they were installed I couldn't eat or speak properly and my back teeth didn't touch any more! Then the dentist ground on 22 other teeth to make them fit and my bite is off and I am miserable. I would like to have all my teeth pulled and have dentures! How much does this cost and will I be happy? Dear Janet, I am sorry you are having problems. From your question, I am not sure I fully understand what you are going through. You may have a bite problem, a skeletal problem or a cosmetic issue or a combination of the above. First, you should realize that If you can keep your teeth you will chew more efficiently, eat better, extract better nutrition from your food and be happier in the long run. People that have had dentures for 5 years typically chew with one fifth the biting force of people that have their natural teeth. Second, dentures don't work like teeth. They are big pieces of acrylic with denture teeth. They block the roof of your mouth from taste sensations and they can dislodge with sneezing, yawning or chewing. Over time they will contribute to further deterioration of the underlying bone through movement of the dentures and friction. So if your situation can be identified, and fixed, that is what you should do. It is very easy to think that pulling teeth and getting dentures will be a solution but in reality they render you a dental cripple with a prosthesis that must be relined or remade every 3-5 years as your gum tissues change. Then if you want to replace these dentures with implant retained dentures or bridges it can be a long and expensive course of treatment compared to saving your natural teeth. So your dentist should evaluate your bite and cosmetics from before your veneers were done and try and recreate the situation where you were comfortable and happy. We would be happy to see you for a second opinion. Dear Dr. Winter, My wife just had grafting to her gums because they were receding. Her dentist says she now needs to have braces to prevent the recession from coming back. Is this common practice? It seems a bit illogical, as her teeth are pretty straight. Thanks. Dear Neal, grafting for root recession is a

Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter

common practice in dentistry. The reason for the recession was probably discussed with your wife prior to the surgery. If the positioning of the teeth contributed to this recession than an overall plan to prevent the recession from returning-ie: braces- was probably discussed. Certainly your wife can always say no to the braces but if the dentist feels this is necessary to prevent a recurrence it seems wise to consider this option. It is also possible that judicious reshaping or recontouring of the teeth could decrease forces that may have accelerated the recession. You should ask the dentist if occlusal equilibration or adjustment could be an option to braces. We are happy to see our readers for a comprehensive examination or second opinion visit. Please call us at 414-464-9021 to schedule your visit. You may read more about our office and view videos and photos of our dentistry at WWW.WINTERDENTAL.COM We look forward to meeting you, Richard Winter D.D.S. M.A.G.D. D.I.C.O.I.
