Alternative

movie series by Ace R. Porter A free, on-campus movie series this fall will offer students an alternative to the $2 Tuesday movies at the local theatre. SGA approved the new series, which will feature Hollywood classics, for one semester. The series was proposed by Student Activities Board sponsor Dusty Kitchen, who said that SAB believed the series might meet the needs of students who could notor did not want toattend the $2 movies downtown. We kept hearing that many students objected to the language and content of the movies being offered at the theatre downtown, Kitchen said. Since other students didnt have rides or couldnt afford to go to the $2 movie, SAB thought we should give this a try. A spring movie series may be planned if attendance at the fall series indicates adequate student interest, said SGA president Jacob Patrick. SGA will consider the series a success if 15 to 20 students show up, he said. Patrick believes an audience for classic film fare exists within the student body. Many theatre majors, especially, are interested in learning from the great actors and actresses of previous generations, Patrick said. Junior communication major Ashlie Manzi is taking a wait-and-see attitude about the new series. Im not exactly sure what to expect, Manzi said, but Im willing to give it a try and see how it turns out. Freshman Caleb Hecker says his preference for new releases will prevail. I can rent old movies and watch them in my dorm room any time, he said. Hollywood Classics opens Tuesday, Oct. 6, in Melhorn 112 with a 9 p.m. showing of Moby Dick, starring Gregory Peck. Students should bring their ID to ensure free admission.
