JFNY: Common Cause Fact-Check

FAST FACTS: ! JFNY opposed WFP-backed candidates in six races. Of those races, JFNY is set to win three while the WFP will win two. ! In 14 races, JFNY endorsed the same candidate as the WFP. The WFP had little involvement in these races beyond endorsements, providing nearly no campaign work on behalf of its chosen candidate. ! JFNY won two races in which the WFP remained neutral. One candidate, Inez Dickens, won by nearly 39 points the third largest margin out of all JFNY candidates. ! Of the 22 races in which JFNY played a significant role, 18 of the candidates it backed won. Of the 19 races in which the WFP also endorsed candidates, 14 of the candidates it backed won. FACT CHECK: Claim: In 6 races, JFNY opposed Working Families Party backed candidates. They spent an average of $316,000/race but only won two of the races. ! Reality: While some official election results remain outstanding, JFNY candidates are set to win three of the six races in which it backed a candidate that WFP opposed. The WFP will win in two of these races. Claim: In 13 races, JFNY endorsed the same candidates as the WFP, spent an average of $206,000, with a success rate of 92%. There is one pending recount that might give them a 100% success rate. ! Reality: JFNY and the WFP endorsed the same candidates in 14 races, 12 of whom won (a success rate of 86%). Common Cause conveniently excludes Micah Kellner in this statistic, but notes JFNY endorsed him in their raw data. ! Reality: The WFP had little involvement in these 14 races beyond endorsements. Only three candidates paid the WFP more than $1,000 for campaign work. The four candidates who had no campaign involvement with the WFP (only endorsements) all won. Claim: The other 3 races include District 9 in Harlem, where Inez Dickens was backed by JFNY but WFP was neutral, the Republican primary in CD 50, and the race for CD 5 in which JFNY spent just $1,200 backing Micah Kellner's unsuccessful campaign. ! Reality: JFNY spent only $1,200 backing Kellner before his scandal broke, after which the IE ceased all spending in his district. JFNY never sent a piece of mail or canvassed in his support. The WFP never rescinded its endorsement of Kellner, and backed him through the primary and to his defeat. ! Reality: JFNY won both races in which the WFP made no endorsement. Inez Dickens won by a nearly 39-point margin the third largest margin out of all JFNY candidates. Claim: JFNY spent $722,000 on expenditures attacking their opponents. ! Reality: An overwhelming majority (85 percent) of JFNYs spending was in support of candidates. Other IEs like NYCN4S, devoted 100 percent of its spending on negative ads. Progressive Brooklyn Political Action Committee, FOF PAC (the Pro-Brooklyn PAC), Make the Road and others spent more than 50 percent of their money on negative campaigning.
