Dear Parent/Guardian,

"BONJOUR" and WELCOME to Grade 2 F.I. WE are looking forward to working with your
child during this new school year 2013-2014. This year will be filled with new wonderful adventures in learning for both, your child and ourselves. In preparation for grade 3, we will be providing your child with opportunities to grow, learn, explore, and the assurances to be a confident and independent learner. We invite you to get in touch with me at any time if you have any questions during the year. Please keep a lookout for our class newsletter entitled Class Flash! which will be sent home early next week. The school schedules will once again run on a five day cycle. Today, Tuesday, September 3rd, is DAY 1, Friday will be DAY 4 and the following Monday will be DAY 5. Every Friday this year, we will have a weekly WORD STUDY of common, new and theme unit words in French. In order to prepare for dicte, a worksheet entitled MOTS (words) will be sent home on Fridays. The children will have the whole week to complete the work to the best of their ability and return it only on the day of the dictation. Therefore, we suggest that your child set aside 10-15 minutes per night to study, review and practise using the vocabulary for that week. A letter with more information about dicte will be sent home soon. We would encourage your child to READ in French nightly. Reading aloud, as opposed to silent reading, is effective in reinforcing the phonics taught daily. Do not worry if you do not understand what is being read in French. Your child is practising their pronunciation while doing this activity. Furthermore, later this month, the students in our class will be taking home, on a regular basis, a home reading program we have entitled: Jaime lire!. More information will be sent home regarding this program. Every student in our class will be receiving a Homework AGENDA which has been generously purchased by the school this year. MERCI BEAUCOUP Mme Schmidlechner et Mme Krattiger! Home-school communication is a key to student success and the agenda planner is an effective tool to no only instill responsibility and organization, but also maintaining ongoing communication between home, classroom and school. Routinely, your child will be completing his/her agenda every day. Parents are asked to read the agenda and look over your childs homework to verify that it is completed to their best ability. Merci! (

Your signature in the agenda is N r e q u i r e d e v e r y d a y

Furthermore, please read the first 10 pages of the agenda with your child. You will find important information regarding school routines, student expectations, etc... Lunch: The lunch hour is from 11:05 to 12:05. Your child is encouraged to bring to school in a reusable lunch bag, a litter less lunch and 2 healthy snacks. If your child eats his/her lunch at school regularly or occasionally, he/she MUST bring signed permission EACH TIME he/she leaves school property at lunchtime. Furthermore, we are a nut aware school. Thank you for choosing not to bring nut or nut products to school. Health and Safety of everyone is our #1 priority.

Your child will require at school a sturdy backpack, a lunch bag, and a pair of indoor running shoes (to be kept at school), and a change of clothes for gym class (if needed). This year the school and us will be providing your child with most of the materials he/she will need to complete his/her work in class. For example: - pencils - an eraser - a glue stick - markers - note books - 1 pair of scissors - a ruler (cm and mm) - a bottle of white glue - file folders - duo-tangs

In grade 2, we will be teaching and encouraging the children to be Responsible Snowbird Citizens. Just to name a few ways your child will be demonstrating responsibility, is by taking good care of his/her own school belongings. Being accountable is also very important, therefore, should your child misplace or loose any of the items listed above, we will ask that your child take the responsibility to replace the item as soon as possible so that he/she may have it, ready to use when he/she needs it (. we will also teach them how to organise themselves in regards to keeping all their tools in a group bin, we will demonstrate ways to organise the contents in their desk, and we will also take the time every day to have your child neatly write down their homework/information in their Agenda.

FYI: Each group in our class has at their disposal at all times, one

permanent marker for which they can write their name on their tools/items. (e.g. pencils, glue, ruler, etc.)

The children often prefer to have their own personal set of tools
(pencils, scissors, pencil crayons, pencil case, etc.). This is also welcomed! Your child may prefer to have his/her very own pencils crayons, eraser, etc. If this is so, I have provided you with a list of items that your child may want to bring to school. ____ large pencil case that opens at the top ( has a double zipper on the top). This pencil case should hold all pencils, crayons, markers, scissors & glue stick.

____ HB pencils (Lots of them! The children LOVE to sharpen their pencils. () Please keep most of the pencils at home. Start by sending only 3 to school. ( ____ package(s) of 24 Crayola pre-sharpened coloured pencil crayons ____ large glue sticks We use them a lot all year long. ____ pencil sharpener that catches shavings ____ 30 cm ruler (please ensure it has cm) ____ a pair of scissors that can cut felt/fabric/cardboard (Write you childs name on them.) ____ 1 double pocket portfolio (Often has a picture of a cartoon character on the front) We use this pocket portfolio daily for organising loose sheets of paper, their personal dictionary and their cursive writing booklet. ____ high lighters (We use them a lot in Math and when reading stories.) ____ red, orange, purple or pink pens Please keep EXTRA pencils, highlighters and red pens at home so that they have more, when needed, throughout the year.

Please

Label all items with your childs name. 7

WE are starting the year by asking you few favours. We would appreciate it if you could collect metal lids from frozen juice cans and old fridge magnets. They will be used in the classroom for painting and for crafts. Please return the following 2 forms as soon as possible. A) The first form is your childs Registration Form. Please remember to review and make changes to the first side AND fill out/complete the back of the form. It contains important information that the school needs as well as a parents signature. B) The second form is found in your childs agenda. It is on page 7. We ask that you read over the School/Board Policies and Safe Use of Technology Contract, approve and sign it. Merci!
