expansion will provide power requirements
for manufacturing facilities for Ulven Forging,
Inc., and Wolf Steel Foundry.
The Ulven Companies have grown
significantly in recent years, and this
continued growth and expansion of the
company have driven the need for expansion
of the power capacity available on The Ulven
Companies campus.
Jordan Reed, Industrial Engineer at The
Ulven Companies, said, The expansion
enables our continual growth and our ability
to meet the needs of our customers, and

Terex Straddle Carrier Transfers
First Container in Germanys
New Container Port
> Eurogate, a leading container-terminal
group, recently inaugurated the first deep-
draught container terminal in Germany, the
Eurogate Container Terminal Wilhelmshaven,
on Germanys North Sea coast. The port has
a natural water depth in excess of 18 meters,
enabling even the worlds largest container
vessels to access the port at any time,
independently of the tides. During a symbolic
opening ceremony, a diesel-electric Terex Noell
SC 644 E straddle carrier picked up the ports
first outgoing container and moved it along
the quay.
Terex Port Solutions contributed a fleet
comprising 36 straddle carriers, manufactured
at its facility in Wrzburg, Germany, to this
new container port. Formed in June 2012,
Terex Port Solutions combined the capabilities
of Gottwald Port Technology with Terex Port
Equipment to create a world leader in the
supply of port technology offering a broad
range of manual, semi-automated, and fully
automated handling solutions.
The Terex Noell SC 644 E straddle carriers
in Wilhelmshaven are to be used for lifting,
carrying, and stacking containers. These
machines have a maximum lifting capacity
of 60 tons under spreader and can lift both
single containers and two fully laden 20-foot
containers in twin-lift operation. They achieve
speeds of up to 24 kph when traveling with
containers and can stack containers one-
over-three, allowing a maximum stack height
of four containers.
The diesel-electric drive system uses its own
on-board diesel generator set that is compliant
with Stage IIIb of the European emission
standards for non-road mobile machinery.
Generator speed is controlled by advanced
power management that ensures particularly
efficient, low-emission operation of the straddle
carriers. In conjunction with an incorporated
sound-reduction package, the noise emissions
of the straddle carriers are also lowered to an
unprecedented level. This combination of
economy and environmental protection is a
common feature of Terex Port Solutions drive
technology and is incorporated into many of
its solutions involving heavy equipment for
ports and terminals. The diesel-electric system
also ties in well with Eurogates environmental
strategy because the terminal operator places
explicit emphasis on the use of terminal
equipment technologies that reduce energy
consumption and exhaust gases.
A principal feature of Terex straddle carriers
is that they offer flexible applicationin
particular, the possibility of raising and moving
containers quickly to increase productivity,
and this at low initial investment and low
operating costs.
We opted for Terex Noell SC 644 E
straddle carriers because of their state-of-
the-art technology, explained Emanuel
Schiffer, CEO of Eurogate. Eurogate deploys
straddle carriers from Noell all over our
network. We brought all our good experience
with straddle carriers from Noell into the
operations of our new terminal.
Guido Luini, Managing Director at Terex
Port Solutions facility in Wrzburg, added:
Terex Port Solutions supplies cutting-edge,
tailor-made systems from a single source
to terminal operators the world overWe
are proud to be able to make such a crucial
contribution to the successful operation of this
deep-draught port that is unique in Germany.
Terex state-of-the-art straddle carriers, all
designed and manufactured in Wrzburg,
Germany, are also equipped with such
cutting-edge features as an automated spreader
positioning system, operator micro steering,
LED lights, a weighing system, and tire
pressure and oil condition monitoring. The
condition of the fleet of straddle carriers and
their subsystems is furthermore permanently
remotely supervised through the Terex Fleet
Management System. y

18 NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2012 WIRE ROPE EXCHANGE
In life, personal connections are often the foundation for success. When we
connect with others, whether professionally or personally, opportunities open
up that can have a life-changing impact on our families, careers, and lifestyles.
But for some, such opportunities are distant, out of reachand not because the obstacles standing in the
way are subjective or idealistic. Worldwide, citizens who are unable to make important connections may
miss signifcant opportunities as a result of purely physical and, in some cases, environmental impediments.
It was this profound realization that mobilized Ken Frantz, owner of Frantz Construction, a
residential construction company in Yorktown, Virginia, into action in 2001.
I was waiting for my truck at the service department one day, when I picked up a National Geographic,
Frantz recalls. It opened up to a broken bridge on a section of the Blue Nile River in Ethiopia. People were
risking their lives trying to cross it. I knew then and there: I could do that. I could build a bridge there.
Inspired by that auspicious photograph, Frantz decided he wanted to help communities in need of
bridge construction and repair. Soon after, he began a bridge-building project that would be the frst of
many for his non-proft organization, Bridges to Prosperity (B2P).

BRIDGES TO PROSPERITY EXTENDS OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES WORLDWIDE
San Lucas, Guatemala
WIRE ROPE EXCHANGE NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2012 19
BUILDING TO EDUCATE: A LEARNING CURVE
A for-proft company is easy in comparison, he says. With the profts I earned, I could reinvest them to hire more
people to make my company grow. Te only proft in the non-proft world comes in the form of good will. But,
how does one convert good will into making a charity grow? For an entrepreneur like me, this was a totally alien
concept, and one of my toughest challenges.
Frantz knew that he couldnt man this project alone and understood, from experience, how important it was
to hire just the right team for the job. Seeking like-minded people and organizations, he employed founding
members Chris Rollins and Zoe Keone Pacciani, who teamed up with the Swiss organization Helvetas, (now
HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation), which is recognized worldwide for creating the design and implementation
concepts for suspended cable footbridges. Rollins and Pacciani were sent to Nepal to train with Helvetas and learn
about cable-suspended bridge technology. Tey also gained project-management skills at the community level,
so they could recruit and train local volunteers.
With a team and the proper training in progress, Frantz realized he somehow had to convert good will into
fnancial resources in order to fund and obtain materials for the Blue Nile River project. He turned to his own bank
account and his local Rotary Club, in Gloucester Point, Virginia, and later the Rotary Club of Newport News for

help. Tese clubs and the Rotary Foundation are now
one of B2Ps largest donors.
Frantzs friend and volunteer, Randy Stacey was
responsible for the maintenance of gantry cranes that
lift containers from ocean liners at VIT. Tis connection
led to the beginning of what would become a valuable
relationship between B2P and Harvey Howlett, owner
of HECO Slings, a Norfolk, Virginia, company that
provides cable, rigging, and lift support for Virginia
International Terminals (VIT).
Ken called me several years ago and set up a visit
with me, says Howlett. After listening to what B2P was
doing in other countries, I told him HECO would help
in any way possible. I sent a truck to the terminals to pick
up the wire and store it at HECO. It helps VIT dispose
of used wire while supporting a good cause. Its a win-win
proposition. HECO Slings, in partnership with VIT,
continues to be the primary donor of cable, along with
other bridge cable installation equipment. And, to this day,
Gloucester Point Rotary Club continues to support B2P
through grants, donations, and volunteer eorts, along with
other corporate, collaborative, and implementing partners.
BUILDING TO INNOVATE:
A GROUP EFFORT
Our eorts are concentrated on footbridges, Frantz
explains. In many parts of the world, walking is the
main mode of transportation. In a walking world, its
possible to become isolated geographically.
VIT and HECO Slings have jointly donated tens of
thousands of feet of wire rope cable to be used for B2P
suspended cable bridge projects. Avery Bang, executive
director for B2P, notes that HECOs Howlett has set
an example of giving in the industry. Its very rare to
fnd a person like Harvey, she observes. Not only does
he give us the cable, but he takes it o the cranes, stores it,
labels it, and then ships it to Africa, Asia, and Latin America
when we need it. Te cable is also of the highest quality and
has already been exercised under load, which is ideal for
suspended cable bridges. Te donated cable is second-hand
and comes pre-stretched from use on the VIT gantry cranes.
With the wire rope pre-stretched, B2P can more accurately
set the tension and elevation of the rope on a footbridge,
which signifcantly increases the life of the bridge.

For the past three years, B2P has received over
160,000 feet of used Bridon wire rope, a special brand
of rope thats noted for its superior quality and reliable
specifcations. Pax Goodson, B2P Board Member and
the person responsible for cable donations and logistics,
has mastered the procedure involved in obtaining and

Te usual shipping method is by sea, he begins. And,
generally, seven spools of rope will get us to the maximum
weight of roughly 38,000 pounds for a 20-foot container.
So, it goes out by ship, gets cleared through customs, and
is trucked to a storage yard in each country. From there,
it is cut to length and taken to the bridge site.
HECO Slings has also donated other bridge cable
installation equipment, such as the Crosby clamp. Te
Crosby Group, Inc., a leader in the manufacture of

HECO Slings Corporation, located in Norfolk, VA, was
started in 1974 by Harvey Howlett Jr., and his late father
Howlett, Sr. HECO, along with Virginia International
Terminals (VIT), have donated over 175,000 feet to
date of wire rope to Bridges to Prosperity (B2P). While
HECO Slings and VIT have supplied 100% of Bridges
to Prosperitys supplies, their needs are growing.
This coming year, B2P will need an additional 30,000
feet to continue their work and grow into other rural
impoverished communities.
Why Footbridges
Rural community members often live in a walking world.
When the rivers swell, walks to school, work or visits to a
doctor can become life threatening without a bridge to cross.
Those who survive on the least often do not have su cient
infrastructure servicing their communities. Safe and
maintained trails and footbridges are necessary to live
healthy and productive lives.
Whats Involved
Soft currency (domestic): Cement, labor, wood for
decking, alternative building materials

Crosby Red-U-Bolts
The average bridge requires 1,500 feet of wire rope.
Between 1,000 and 2,600 feet of wire rope come on
a single spool from a gantry crane. Second-hand cable
like those that have been used on a gantry crane is
ideal as the wire rope is pre-stretched and B2P can
more accurately set the tension and elevation of the
rope on a footbridge, which signicantly increases
the life of the bridge.
Wire rope and clips are the biggest needs for the
organization. B2P is currently seeking donations
for wire rope sizes 6x19 IWRC, in diameter ranges
between 7/8" and 1 1/4". Please contact the organization
if you are able to donate other sizes or materials.

BUILDING TO INSPIRE: BRIDGES
TO PROSPERITY
Bridges can change lives, Frantz describes. Tey
provide access to education, healthcare, sustainable
resources, employment, and businesses, such as cash
crops and commodity crops. Te bridges provide access
to unlimited opportunity.
Helvetas cable suspended design, a system that had
been developed and implemented in Nepal for over
30 years, is the blueprint for B2Ps Suspended Bridge
Manual, which provides a template-style overview of
the strategy for designing, engineering, and building
footbridges. Once funding and donors have been secured
for a project, a plan is put into action that encompasses
surveying bridge sites, obtaining domestic supplies,
and, most importantly, delegating responsibilities
both during and after bridge construction.
B2Ps model is based on teaching people to build
and maintain their bridges on the local level, Bang says.
Tey are taught to make use of their local resources.
B2P empowers communities to form Bridge
Committees, and makes the program available to local
masons and engineers. Te strategy is then modifed to
incorporate local construction techniques and alternative
building materials. Builders include recruits from the
countrys municipality, local labor, volunteer engineers,
corporate volunteers, and University Chapter students.
A CLEAR PATH TO PROSPERITY
Once a bridge project is completeda process that
can take anywhere from a few months to a year, and
can cost from $12,000 to $36,000 depending on
locationthe result is more than a secure structure
that provides safe passage over impassable terrain.
Bridges to Prosperity provides connection to a world
of opportunity. With access to markets, food supplies,
healthcare, and education, communities that once lived
in rural isolation can grow and prosper. Te newfound
availability of transportation introduces employment
opportunities, exchange of resources, new roles for
women in the community, and disease treatment and
prevention. Te program has also helped to signifcantly
reduce poverty.
Te amazing achievements, accomplishments,
and success of B2P and its contributing partners
were celebrated last July with the opening of the
organizations 100th bridge. Tere were almost 2,000
people in attendance the day we celebrated the bridge
opening in Rwanda, Frantz recounts. It was an
unbelievable turnout.
To date, B2P has built 101 bridges in 16 dierent
countriesand counting. Te organizations founder
and volunteers hope to further extend the world of
possibility to communities in need with additional
support from interested companies, in the form of
equipment, supplies, services, and funding. y

Its hard to imagine a time before the advent of chains and the
chainmaking industry. Since the colonial era, when blacksmiths labored
over smoky forges, crafting links one at a time, the industry and its national
trade association have developed into strong and enduring forcesone
painstaking link at a time.

LINK AT A TIME:

80TH ANNIVERSARY
In 2013, the National Association of Chain
Manufacturers (NACM), originally known as Te
Chain Institute, will celebrate its 80th anniversary. One
of the oldest industrial trade associations in the country,
NACM has guided chain manufacturing through
periods of rapid expansion, recovery, automation, and
innovation, and now provides specifcations to a wide
array of other American industries.
NACMs member frms are equally dedicated
and distinguished: most of them have been in the
chainmaking business in excess of eight decades,
and some for more than a century.
BY DON SAYENGA
NACM members supply hooks and
other attachments as well as chain.
A GRIPPING PERIOD
OF INNOVATION
Perhaps the most signifcant innovation for chainmakers
was the air-flled rubber tire for automobiles and trucks.
Te new tires softened the ride on bumpy unpaved
wagon roads, but they were rendered nearly useless in
inclement weather. In 1904, Harry Weed of Canastota,
New York, received U.S. Patent No. 768,495 for his
Grip-Tread for Pneumatic Tires. Weeds fexible and
collapsible tread provided increased traction on roads
slick with mud, snow, or ice. It was fabricated entirely
of chains and was held in place by infation of the tires.
Te Grip-Tread was an instant success.
Weed organized his own business to produce his
treads in sets. Soon, every automobile and truck in
America would be carrying a set of tire chains. As
demand increased, the inventor expanded his operation
and acquired the factory of his chain supplier, the
Oneida metalworking company, which later became
famous for its tableware.
By 1912, there were 32 chainmaking companies
in the country25 of which were located in Ohio
and Pennsylvania. During World War I, requirements

In the 1980s when the demand for tire chains peaked in the USA, sharp-eyed
women performed visual inspection to verify the quality of the twisted
cross links (left) while other women rapidly assembled the chain
sets (below).
In 1933, 40 chain companies then producing 90%

in a series of meetings to form a coalition which
would later become the National Association of Chain
Manufacturers (NACM).

for American military and naval equipment fueled the
industrys growth, and many of the smaller companies
united to create larger, more diverse consolidations.
CRISIS CREATES CHANGE
As Te Great Depression descended in October
1929, the U.S. economy collapsed and continued to
disintegrate for three more years. During this time,
the chain industry experienced intense competition,
and the notion of cooperative action oered a
practicable solution. In 1932, the federal administration
introduced sweeping changes to American business
practices. Newly elected President Franklin D. Roosevelt
encouraged private companies to form industry
coalitions under a stimulus law called the National
Industrial Recovery Act.
Responding to the call for a coalition, 40 chain
companiesthen producing 90% of the nations welded
and weldless chainattended a series of meetings in
Pittsburgh, Bualo, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.,
during the summer and fall of 1933. Tese meetings
resulted in the formation of a new cooperative chain
organization in Washington, D.C. Te group was
subdivided into product-related committees, such
as a welded chain committee, a tire chain committee,
and a committee for producers of small chains,
including sash chains, register chains, and jack chains.
During this brief stimulus period, almost every
major metal fabricating industry in the country
had formed a trade association. Teyd established
commercial codes and agreed to fxed limits on
prices, wages, and employment. Vast amounts of
statistical information, covering such things as costs
and distribution systems, had been shared among
chainmakers. Contacts with other trade associations,
including the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)
and the American Society for Testing and Materials
(ASTM) had also been initiated.
Seeking the simplifcation and standardization of
chains, the industry continued its vigorous cooperation
with the Federal Government into the 1940s. A few
days before the Attack on Pearl Harbor, in 1941,
Robert Martino of the Bureau of Standards noted
the associations progress. For example: Trough
its Committee on Tire Chain Specifcations, the
[association] has prepared, and keeps constantly under
revision, specifcations for several types of tire chains
However, the Federal Trade Commission soon
halted such progress. In the hope of eliminating what
it considered to be anticompetitive business practices,
the FTC issued cease and desist orders against a large
number of trade associations, including the one formed
by the chain industry.
REORGANIZING THE
ORGANIZATION
Ultimately, the chain industry modifed its practices to
eradicate all of the activities considered objectionable
by the FTC. Meetings were conducted according
to antitrust laws, and cooperative eorts focused on
programs of beneft to the general public, such as an
educational campaign for safe winter driving.
In 1956, in recognition of its revised mission,
the organization changed its name to Te National
Association of Chain Manufacturers and relocated to
Chicago, Illinois, which continues to be the nonprofts
corporate base. Te NACM business o ce has moved

several times, most recently to
Tucson, Arizona.
Te promulgation of model chain
specifcations opened the door for a
wide variety of open-ended technical
communications with many other
trade associations. Following the
lead of ASTM, NACM adopted
a practice to review and/or revise
all specifcations at intervals of fve
years or sooner to refect advances
in technology.
A decade ago, NACM established a
Website at www.nacm.info and began
posting its model specifcations in
the convenient Adobe Portable Data
File (PDF) format. Copies can now be
downloaded and printed, free of charge,
as long as copyrights are respected.
NACM specifcations have been adopted
in total, in part, or in reference, by a
large number of trade associations and
standards-writing organizations, in
addition to ASTM and SAE. Today,
NACM maintains an interface with
state and local governments, as well

WHATS NEW KINEDYNE ANNOUNCES ENHANCEMENTS
TO LOAD BINDER PRODUCT LINE
Kinedyne recently revised its chain/load binder product oering to become
fully compliant with newly released industry standards. For the rst time in history, the
Web Sling and Tie-Down Association (WSTDA) recently published a set of recommended
standards for load binders. In the spring of 2011, the association released the publication,
WSTDA T-6 Recommended Standard Specication for Load Binders Used with Chain
Tie-Downs,after a lengthy review of the matter.
WSTDA is a technical association dedicated to the development and promotion
of voluntary recommended standards. Members of the WSTDA include a wide variety
of manufacturers and suppliers of synthetic lifting and tie-down products, as well as
transport chains and load binders.
The new standard will help to ensure a minimum level of quality and traceability for all load binders. The changes
to Kinedyne load binders were made in anticipation of action by federal and local enforcement agencies to eventually
adopt the new standard into existing cargo securement regulations.
Ralph Abato, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at Kinedyne, is a 28-year veteran of the industry. He has also
worked closely with the WSTDA for more than 20 years and currently holds the title of Vice President of the association
as well as a position on the Board of Directors of the group. The WSTDA is a widely recognized and respected group
that many in our industry look to for leadership and guidance, says Abato. Since no regulations previously existed
for load binders, the new standard will help customers qualify their vendors and select those who provide safe
and durable products that meet their cargo securement needs and meet all relevant industry standards. Kinedynes
investment in our load binder product line will reinforce how committed the company is to providing the highest
quality products in the industry.
Kinedyne customers will eventually receive shipments of the improved bindersfeaturing all-new marking
and labeling enhancementsonce current inventories are depleted from stock on a part-number-specic basis.

The LK 40 hydraulic shear cutting machine is ideal for
cutting wire rope in a safe and eortless manner. The machine is
designed for e ciency and is very cost-eective. The LK 40 has a
capacity to cut up to 40 mm of the ordinary single layer round
strand ropes, grade 1 960. The key components are made from
high-quality steel, which means durability and reliability.
Features of the LK 40 include easy and accessible design,
allowing quick insertion of wire rope and e cient operation; an
automatic switch to stop the motor after each cutting operation;
and a press-down foot pedal to start a new cutting operation.
When designing the new LK 40, operator safety was an important
factor. Each side is equipped with protective rubber aps, while still
maintaining easy insertion of the wire rope. Furthermore, the foot
pedal, which controls the hydraulic unit, allows the operator the
use of both hands during the entire cutting operation.
The most common model is mounted vertically on a
stand; however, The LK 40 can
also be placed on a wagon for
easy cutting close to the oor, or
mounted on a bench, giving the

The Liebherr heavy lift oshore crane series consists of machine types with lifting
capacities from 300t to 3,000t. The machine types are BOS 7500, BOS 14000, BOS 35000,
BOS 45000, MTC 78000, CAL 45000, and CAL 64000.
Because of the increasing importance of heavy lift oshore cranes, Liebherr developed
the heavy lift oshore crane type CAL 64000 1500 Litronic, which is used for the
installation of oshore wind turbine generators. The rst crane will be delivered for
the jack-up vessel Innovation, owned by HGO InfraSea Solutions.
In addition, two further heavy lift units type BOS 35000 were delivered to the
company DSME in Korea (for RWE Innogy, oshore installation ship Victoria Mathias and
Friedrich Ernestine) as well as one unit BOS 45000 to the company Keppel Fels in Singapore (Workfox Seafox).
The CAL 64000 1500 Litronic achieves a maximum lifting capacity of 1,500t at a maximum working radius of
31.5m. The boom length of the crane currently on order is 105m. The dead weight of the new crane is 1,500t at a lifting
height of over 120m above deck. The special feature of the heavy lift crane is its slewing ring with an outer diameter
of 13m.
The slewing bearing alone weighs over 100 t. Moreover, the crane is designed as Crane Around the Legbuilt around
one of the vessels four legs.
This specially developed crane type, which is able to rotate 360 degrees around the vessels leg, oers a relatively small
obstruction area of 12m, whichtogether with a slewing ring inner diameter of 11mallows for ideal positioning of the
crane around the vessels leg. Thanks to the special twin boom design, the boom can even be lowered and parked over one
of the vessels front legs. This solution prevents the crane from obstructing free space on deck which can be used for loading
the jack-up vessel.
The enormous lifting capacity of the heavy lift crane enables the installation of over 5MW strong turbines and rotors
as well as the loading and subsequent safe installation of the heaviest foundations. Apart from the installation of oshore
wind power stations, the crane is also suitable for the oil and gas market, e.g. for assembly and disassembly of platforms
or other structures. For more information, visit www.liebherr.com.y

The emergency lowering device recently introduced by J.D. Neuhaus for its EH range
of air operated hoists can now also be supplied as a standard feature on the Pro Ti line
from 25 to 60 tons lift capacity. Hoists incorporating the emergency lowering device option
are equipped with a separate air tank, with two additional buttons also incorporated into
the hand controllers. This air reservoir is automatically maintained at the full working air
pressure during normal hoist operations. This ensures the availability of a positive emergency
braking system when required, and the air tank is also protected by a check valve. Certication
by Det Norske Veritas can also be provided on request, to comply with safety requirements
involving applications for oshore cranes as well as power-driven hoists.
The device becomes operable in the event of a severe reduction or total loss of mains
air pressure. It then provides practical two-handed operation to avoid unintentional
lowering. One of the control button switches then selects between normal hoist operation
and emergency lowering. The second control button opens the integrated operational
brake to facilitate a controlled lowering of the suspended load under the action of its own
dead weight. Where the Pro hoists are equipped with trolleys for lateral movements, the
reservoir air tank can be mounted on the chain box container. For static hoists, the reservoir
can be mounted anywhere convenient within the surrounding working area.
The Pro Ti range is suitable for all engineering applications throughout a wide range
of industries, including oil and gas exploration and processing, mining, shipbuilding,
foundries, the chemical industry, and heavy plant construction. For more information,

compound, when left unchecked, can lead to rope
failure. And when ropes break down, the outcome
is, typically, never goodnot only is there likely
to be signifcant fnancial loss, but the potential
for personal injury is also high.
Reick describes his newest product as an extremely
surface-active, industrial anti-rust lubricant and
corrosion-inhibitor which, when applied, quickly
disappears into the cable. It soaks right in so that
every nook and cranny is protected.
Moreover, HinderRust contains absolutely no
solvents: its both environmentally and user-friendly.
I originally promised myself that if I couldnt
do it without solvents, I wouldnt do it at all.
PUTTING THE BRAKES ON RUST
Interestingly, the wire rope industry and its rust-related
concerns were far from Reicks mind when he frst
conceived of HinderRust. In fact, the idea frst came
to him following a near accident on a busy highway.
I stepped on the brake pedal and nothing
happened, he recalls. It went right to the foor.
Te culprit?
Rust.
I managed to safely maneuver the vehicle into a
service station and there I saw that the entire brake line
tubing had rusted out. Because of this, brake fuid had
leaked, making the brakes unresponsive.
While thankfully no harm befell him that day,
Reick believes the incident was avoidable and therefore
completely inexcusable. I thought to myself, What
if it had been my wife driving when the brakes failed?
Teres no excuse for that sort of time-bomb,
he insists. I decided to see if I could develop a
rust inhibitor that would put a stop to that sort
of nonsense.
For Rust, ITS THE
END OF THE LINE
If rust is the enemy of wire rope, then Frank Reick could be
considered its savior. Reick, an award-winning inventor who
holds approximately 40 patents, is the President of Fluoramics,
Inc., the New Jersey-based producer of lubricants, greases,
and oxygen-compatible thread sealants. To develop his latest
invention, he spent just over two years in his laboratory devising
a formula that would forestall the corrosive eects of rust.

WIRE ROPE EXCHANGE NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2012 33
This is Franklin Reick at work,
on one of his Scanning Electron
Microscopes (SEMs), in his lab.
It was during the early developmental stages when Reick
frst realized his rust-repelling work-in-progress could actually
be of tremendous beneft in a number of additional areas,
including the wire rope industry.
Hes had a longtime friendship with Chris Reinauer
of Reinauer Transportation Companies (RTC), the Staten
Island, New York-headquartered maritime frm that
specializes in petroleum and chemical transportation. We
were talking one day and I happened to mention my new
project. He immediately wanted to try it. He explained
theyd been facing issues with wire rope rusting.
Te eects of HinderRust, he recollects, were
impressiveand wholly unexpected.
Everybody was fabbergasted when we tried it. Even I
was really surprised. It just changes the whole nature of the
way rope behaves. Because its so fuid and surface-active, its
literally protecting the rope from the inside out. As a result,
the rope is going to last much longer.
AN INDUSTRY GAMECHANGER
Back at his lab, Reick and his team conducted further, more
comprehensive testing. Tey ultimately performed more
than 100 experimentsan amount far in excess of the usual
40 trials most products undergoto ensure the e cacy
of HinderRust.
During the testing phase, Reick purchased samples of
wire rope from a local supplier and exposed them to the
harshest of elementssalt water. Tree months after being
immersed, the pieces coated with HinderRust were, he
proclaims, still totally rust-free. Meanwhile, the control
samples, the ropes which were only coated with the
manufacturers lubricant, looked as if theyd been buried
with the Titanic, he says.
All told, Reick was pleased with the outcome, which,
he believes, marks HinderRust as a game-changer. Its a
winner. And in terms of the wire rope industry, this may
be bigger than any of us expected.
Tis is absolutely a big deal.
Of course, this isnt the frst time the veteran industrial
engineer has brought an innovative new oering to market.
In the 1980s, for instance, after noticing the tremendous
level of smog created by engine emissions, Reick invented
Tufoil lubricant. Shortly after its release, Tufoil was
named in the Guinness Book of World Records as Worlds
Most E cient Lubricant. Today, it remains a top-seller
for Fluoramics.
STATE OF THE ART IS AN INSULT TO ME. THATS WHAT
EVERYBODY ELSE DOES. Frank Reick, President of Fluoramics, Inc.
When developing new products, Reick always abides by
one basic rule: If I cant make it better than everybody else,
then I refuse to do it.
Expectedly, this mantra was foremost in mind when
formulating HinderRust. And, as predicted by his
commitment, it is indeed proving, thus far, to be another
unmatched triumph for its creator.
According to Reick, sales have, since HinderRusts release
earlier this year, been quite good and are on a steady
upward trajectory. His o ce was even felding sales calls
prior to production, thanks to pre-release buzz coupled
with Reicks formidable reputation.
We actually had product sold before we had labels ready, he
reveals. Te New York Subway system, for example, was eager
to switch to something that wouldnt emit fumes in small spaces.
When they heard about HinderRust, he says, they were sold.
And so, it seems, are many others.
Were already seeing lots of sales overseas. Firms in
Italy, Brazil, and Malaysia are placing orders.
Stateside, business is likewise brisk. RTC has, for its Senesco
maritime division, been very excited about it. Teyre buying
gallons of it and just putting it on everything they can think of.
Even with such a track record of achievement, Reick never
stops to rest on his laurels; he is, he admits, always thinking.
Would you believe that right now I am working on
something that will make planes fy faster? Teres always
an idea in the back of my head, Reick declares. y
