WHAT IS DUAL ENROLLMENT?

Dual enrollment refers to an arrangement where students are enrolled in courses that count for both high school and college credit. College credits earned through dual enrollment can be applied toward graduation at Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) and may be transferred to another college or university. Dual enrollment allows students to progress to their next academic challenge without having to wait until high school graduation. High school students enrolled at the college are college students.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

n Will the credits transfer? Four-year institutions are readily accepting community college credits. However, students are encouraged to contact the admissions office at the receiving institution to verify policies and requirements. n Am I still a freshman? Once enrolled in a college or university, class standing will be determined based upon successful completion of credits. n How do I receive my grades? Grades are issued to students, not parents, each semester. Grade reports are not mailed. Students may view their grades, print unofficial transcripts and have official transcripts sent to other colleges through the online Student Information System. The high school guidance office also receives a copy of the grades. n Is the course work challenging? Dual enrollment courses have the same academic rigor as a regularly scheduled college course. Assignments and attendance are included in most courses as part of the grade. The grading scale is determined by each instructor. Students should consult with the instructor, seek a tutor or consider withdrawing if they experience difficulty with course work. A student should consult with the instructor before withdrawing. n Where do I get my textbook? After registering for courses at LFCC, visit the bookstore to purchase textbooks. n Do I qualify for financial aid? In order to qualify for financial aid, you must have a high school diploma or general educational development (GED) credential.

n What is

placement testing?
Placement testing includes reading, writing and math and is required to ensure that students are placed in courses for which they are academically prepared. Placement testing may be waived for students with SAT scores of 500 or higher in both critical reading and math. Contact your high schools guidance department for testing schedules or go to the Testing Center at the College. It is recommended that you call ahead to determine hours. At the Middletown Campus, call 540-868-7140; at the Fauquier Campus, call 540-351-1515; and at the Luray-Page County Center, call 540-843-0722. *Dual enrollment coursework is restricted to high school juniors and seniors. Exceptions may be considered for freshman and sophomore students who are able to demonstrate readiness for college level coursework. It is expected that all students meet placement criteria prior to enrolling in dual enrollment coursework. Freshman and sophomore students must meet with the dean of the respective division for the courses for which they wish to enroll. The deans and appropriate faculty will review placement test scores and determine student eligibility. * Home schooled students must attach the following information to the green form each time the student registers for courses: placement test scores, letter of approval from school division regarding home schooled instruction or religious exemption, and Required Educational Test results from spring testing done through the public school division. If testing results are not available, the student is required to meet with the dean(s) of the discipline(s) for the courses for which the student wishes to enroll. Students should work with their high school guidance counselor to ensure that college courses meet requirements for high school graduation.
