MAGICAL DRAFTS AND POTIONS

BY ARSENIUS JIGGER

While this book should be in possession of every first year at Hogwarts, the library also offers a few copies in the Magical Textbook Section.

Chapter 1 A Treatise on Potions

Potions (Latin potio, 'beverage') are magical mixtures commonly brewed in cauldrons and used to create various effects on the drinker. A wizard or witch who specializes in potion brewing is known as a potioneer. Potions are brewed from ingredients with magical properties. Potions can be used as medicine, lethal poison, or give the drinker any effect from strength enhancement to immunity to flames. Potions are not necessarily used by drinking, as some can be applied by physical contact or create an effect simply by being created, such as the Regeneration Potion. One very important thing to remember about potions is "A clean cauldron keeps potions from becoming poisons." The science of potion making includes the use of words that are specific to this art. A brew is a liquid mixture made by steeping, soaking, or boiling solid ingredients in water. A concoction is, simply, a mixture of ingredients. A draught or draft is one serving or portion of a potion. The word draft indicates the substance is drawn from a cask rather than from a closed bottle. An elixir is a sweetened, aromatic solution used as medicine. A philtre is a potion designed to enchant or charm the drinker. A poison is a potion intended to cause harm or death to the drinker. A tincture is a benign medicine preserved in alcohol. The supplies for potions are universal for all potions. Chapter 14 Undetectable Poisons

Undetectable Poisons are a type of poison that are presumably undetectable by any method. Unfortunately, since they are undetectable, there is little one can do to detect them, save for look for the symptoms of the poison from the person who ingests it. A poison is any substance that can cause severe distress or death if ingested, breathed in, or absorbed through the skin. There exists both an Antidote to Common Poisons that can counteract the effect of many ordinary poisons, as well as an Antidote to Uncommon Poisons that is helpful against many rarer ones. A bezoar is a stone taken from the stomach of a goat that will reverse the effects of most poisons, though there are certain unusual ones that it won't work against.

Chapter 15 Conclusion

Potions are a very delicate subject, and must be handled delicately. One missed step in their creation can either create an undesired effect, or even poison a person. This book is simply an introduction to potion-making for students of the craft. It should also serve as a warning to treat potions seriously, as most instances of poisonings are because of incorrectly brewed potions. However, with a careful eye and a steady hand, potions can save live and enhance oneself.
