Catholic Charities USA

In 1727, almost 50 years before the American Revolution, a group of French Ursuline Sisters arrived in New Orleans and opened an orphanage. By the 1900s, more than 800 Catholic institutions had sprung up to care for the needs of the poor. Many of those who were served included immigrants, children, individuals who were disabled and/or sick, and aging men and women. In 1910, representatives from this Catholic Charity Network gathered in Washington D.C. for the first time for a National Conference of Catholic Charities. This Conference has been meeting ever since, and in 1986, it became known as Catholic Charities USA. Those early representatives of the Catholic Charity Network set out to be the "attorney for the poor." Today, Catholic Charities USA is recognized as one of the nation's largest social service networks, with 90% of every dollar going directly to programs and services. Catholic Social Service, a member of Catholic Charities USA, was started in 1965 to serve those in need in southwest Kansas. We offer programs in adoption (including education, support, and search and reunion assistance), pregnancy counseling, teen mother support, marriage and relationship classes, addiction and recovery counseling, food and economic assistance, disaster relief, and education and advocacy support for social justice issues. Through these programs, we strive to strengthen individuals, couples, families, and communities throughout southwest Kansas. 6

Virgil Ellis Gunter

1929-2013
On Tuesday, January 26, 2013, Catholic Social Service lost a loyal friend and faithful servant: longtime board member, Virgil Ellis Gunter. Though he was born in Colorado, Virgil spent most of his life living, working, and serving others throughout the state of Kansas. As a child, Virgil moved with his family to Alden, Kansas where he graduated from high school before serving in the U.S. Army in the late 1940s. Virgil worked with various Cooperatives throughout Kansas before becoming a salesman for Farmland Industries where he later sold securities. In 1963, Virgil moved to Lakin, Kansas and in 1978 he moved one last time to Garden City. The next year, on November 23, 1979, he married the love of his life, Josephine Ramos. Beginning in July 1990, Virgil served as a valuable member of the Board of Directors for Catholic Social Service. In addition to serving as the Vice President of the Board, Virgil and his wife Josie were faithful supporters of the Catholic Social Service Wine Tasting event, donating their time-share every year since the event began. Additionally, Virgil was a member of St Mary Catholic Church in Garden City, a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus #2795 of Garden City, the American Legion, the Finney County Senior Center, and RSVP where he loved to volunteer at Garden City Community College and for Meals on Wheels. Virgil enjoyed dancing, playing golf, woodworking, building bird houses, and spending time with his grandchildren. Tonight, we pay tribute to Virgil Gunter. May he rest in peace. 7

Basic Wine Tasting Tips

Every glass of wine we drink represents a whole year of vineyard cultivation and perhaps several years of effort in the winery . . . . Yet most of us throw it away, straight down our throats, without even trying to read it. Jancis Robinson 1. Pour wine into a clean, clear glass and hold your glass by the stem. Holding the bowl could change the temperature of the wine, and cover the bowl with fingerprints. 2. View the glass against a white background or light and observe the wines color and clarity. 3. Swirl the wine glass for a few seconds to let the wine breathe; this will bring out the aromas. 4. Sniff the wine. 5. Sip the wine. Roll the wine gently in your mouth for a few seconds before swallowing. 6. Consider your impressions of the wine. Feel free to ask the host about his or her impressions of the wine and its characteristics. 7. Repeat with the same wine or different wine. If desired, skip steps two through four. 8. Ask questions. Winery staff members are helpful and will guide you through the processreplace the intimidation factor with a curiosity to learn more about wine. 9. Avoid offering your opinion or descriptions of the wine until everyone in your party has had an opportunity to taste and consider their own opinions. 10. Make notes; keep a record of each wine you have tasted. 11. Please consume responsibility. Drinking in excess diminishes your sense of taste (Buckets are available to dispose of excess wine after tasting.) Wine was created from the beginning to make men joyful, and not to make them drunk.Ecclesiasticus 31 12

15. Calista May Knitted Shawl Kit - The artist behind this shawl writes: I named this shawl after a long line of very crafty women. My grandmother (Ida May) came from Hays, Kansas in a covered wagon. Her family became one of many Dry Farmer families in southeastern Colorado. She met and married my Grandfather and they worked the cattle ranch where I was raised. My Grandma and my mom (Calista) taught me how to knit, crochet, quilt, and cook. They are all lessons I am very thankful for. I hope you carry on a bit of the heritage from my family as you knit this semicircular shawl; the stripes remind me of the ruts from the Santa Fe Trail that crossed our ranch and the wagons that carried the 1000s of women like my Grandma May to a new future.
