SUGGESTED SPIELS Daniel: May we ask our lovely couple to please proceed to the cake table for this tradition. Interactive Spiels on the origin of the tradition and its meaning while the bride and groom goes through the cakecutting Daniel: The cake tradition has many roots. You might find it interesting that; originally, the cake was not eaten by the bride but thrown at her! Ging: Talaga lang? Daniel: Yes. The ancient Romans would bake a cake made of wheat or barley and break it over the brides head as a symbol of her fertility. So, whether this meant cracking the cake above the brides head or actually throwing the cake at her is rather unclear. Ging: And Im sure no one wants to know (laughs) kaw kaya tapunan ng cake..! Buti na lang, nasa modern times na tayo ipinanganak.. Daniel: At hindi lang yan! Over time, it became traditional to stack several cakes atop one another, as tall as possible. And then yong bride and groom would be charged to kiss over this tower without knocking it over. If they were successful, they believed that a lifetime of good fortune was certain for the new couple.. Ging: Naman?! Napaka-blessed pala natin no? Dahil kay Kristo, di natin kailangang magpapaniwala sa mga ganyang pamahiin. Instead, we have this cake ceremony to formally open the grand wedding celebration that we will all be sharing with our lovely couple. The cake symbolizes a happy married life that the couple would enjoy from this day forward. Lets pray that John and Marifel will continue to share the sweetness of love that they will continue to live together with their hearts pure of joy in serving the Lord as husband and wife and as a family. Music gets louder as the cake is cut and fed by the couple to each other.

SUGGESTED SPIELS As a sign of respect, the bride then serves the grooms parents a piece of cake and the groom serves the brides parents a piece of cake. Chorus of Music ascends in volume Daniel: Kapag wedding, aside from the cake, di rin nawawala yong wine -toasting? Pano din ba nag-umpisa ang tradisyon na yan? Interactive Spiels on the origin of the tradition and its meaning while the bride and groom goes through the winetoasting Ging: The tradition of toasting at a marriage banquet was first introduced by the Greeks back in 6th century BC but was mainly understood as a safety measure. The groom (since he is considered as the new head of the family) would take a sip from his cup to ensure that it was not poisoned. A century later, the Romans picked up this practice but for a completely different reason. Almost any guest can stand up and wish the newlyweds a prosperous and fruitful union. Daniel: Ah, ok. So in that case, let it be then that as the couple drinks the wine, it would be an affirmation of their pledge of loyalty and fidelity to each other regardless of their circumstances.. be it blissful or even the most trying times of their married life. Let us pray that during these moments, they will always cling to no one but to the Lord, the very foundation of their love.
