The Great Airship Regatta Part 1 The Journy By Austin Carline

AustinStudios 2013

EXT.SHIP.DAY It is a calm day. A few birds fly across the screen into the sunset on the horizon of a vast ocean. There is a buzzing noise that grows louder and louder. Then out of nowhere comes a huge airship. There are about 5 different people on the deck of this ship. Most of them are shouting at each other to try to get things done. One of them has a compass and a map and is charting their direction. His name is Charles, a young man of 19. CHARLES Turn to a new heading of zero three zero degrees. One of the people on the ship is on the back and standing next to a large steering wheel. He is wearing a large hat witch signifies that he is a captain. His name is Mr. Riverstorm. MR. RIVERSTORM Aye! As they turn two other men put coal into large furnaces. Charles is standing by a third furnace with another person. His name is Verne. Pointing to the furnace Charles says. CHARLES OK Verne so this here is a furnace. First what you have to do is you need to shovel the coal inside. Charles takes a shovel and scoops up some coal and throws it into the furnace. The furnace grows red and a few ashes escape the fire. Charles then puts his hand on a large tank directly above the furnace and taps it a few times. CHARLES The furnace heats up this tank of water turning the water into steam. We then release the steam by pulling this leaver. Charles then points to a leaver above him and pulls it and a powerful stream of steam is released from the tank. The steam goes up into a large balloon above it. CHARLES You see the steam goes into the envelope and heats the air inside until it is hotter than the air outside. Since the hot air is less dense than the cold air this will (MORE) (CONTINUED)

Charles hands him the shovel and he starts shoveling coal into the furnace. Then he pulls the leaver releasing the steam. This causes the balloon to go higher into a cloud. Visibility is almost zero. Charles leaves him and goes back to his charts. MR. RIVERSTORM Heading Mr. Wright Charles scrambles threw his charts. CHARLES Aye captain! He takes a quick look at his compass and draws a line using a straight edge on the paper. CHARLES Turn to heading one eight zero. Mr. Riverstorm the captain then proceeds to sharply turn the ship around. He then looks down at a hatch with two more men standing inside the ship. MR. RIVERSTORM (Yelling) We need more power! Both the men go to two more furnaces which power two steam engines that move a large propeller on each side of the ship. The ship gets faster and faster. MR. RIVERSTORM (Yelling Louder) WE NEED MORE POWER! The men put more and more coal in the furnace making the propellers spin so fast that the right propeller falls off. The ship begins to turn sharply to the right. Mr. Riverstorm the captain turns the steering wheel all the way to the left trying to correct for the broken propeller. The clouds that were blocking the view were now gone. The view of the shoreline is extremely clear now. To the left on the shore is a light house. The Captain keeps looking at the light house until the ship passes it completely. He then proceeds to take out a pocket watch and press a button stopping a timer. (CONTINUED)

Everyone stops what they were doing and the ship comes to a complete stop. The ship lies stationary on the coast. Down on the ground next to a road there is a sign that says welcome to Shipfield New York. EXT.MARKET.DAY There is a food cart in the middle of a busy downtown street among many other food carts. Next to it lies a newspaper stand. Charles is standing at a food cart buying some food for his family. He picks up 2 apples, 2 oranges, and a head of cabbage and hands them to the man running the stand. The man looks inside the bag and says STAND OWNER That will be 15 dollars please. Charles reaches into his pocket and takes out some money and lays it out on the counter. In the pile of money he pulls out a 20 dollar bill and hands it to the stand owner. As the owner is counting his money Charles notices a newspaper that says that the Great Airship Regatta is only a week away from starting. The store owner notices Charles glance at the paper. STAND OWNER The Great Airship Regatta... possibly the greatest race ever created. CHARLES You got that right, ever since was a little kid I have wanted race. And now I get my chance. boss created a racing team and agreed that I could be part of crew. I to My he the

The store owner hands Charles his change. He gives Charles a nervous look. STAND OWNER You are? Well good luck. Apparently you are a braver man than me. The race is too dangerous. I would much rather watch the race on television. Charles picks up the bag of food. (CONTINUED)

CHARLES Well a little adventure doesnt scare me. Charles leaves the stand. Across the street lies a ship yard full of old, new, and broken ships. Charles crosses the street not paying attention and almost gets hit by a car. The car honks as it drives away. There are many different hangers at the ship yard and Charles goes into the largest and possibly the most broken down of all of them. INT.SHIPFIELD BUILDING.DAY The building is very large and contains about two large airships. Over to the right is Mr. Riverstorms office with a large window to look out and keep an eye on everything. Charles walks over to where the office is and over to a box just to the left of Mr. Riverstorms office. This is where people place their thumbprint to clock in and out. Charles is about to place his thumb down on the box when he hears a voice. MR. RIVERSTORM Charles, ah yes just the man I was looking for. May I please see you in my office. It was his boss Mr, Riverstorm. He was peeking out of the door signaling for Charles to go in. Charles follows him into his office. INT.OFFICE.DAY Mr. Riverstorm goes over to his desk and sits down. He points at the chair in front of his desk. MR. RIVERSTORM Have a seat. Charles sits down at the seat. He nervously looks around the room. Mr. Riverstorm is slowly tapping his finger on the table getting a good look at Charles. MR. RIVERSTORM Ill be blunt about this. Im going to have to let you go. CHARLES (surprised) WHAT!?

MR. RIVERSTORM Now Charles you know why. These are some crazy times we are living in. There isnt the demand for ships like there used to be. The company needs to downsize and we need to cut the number of shipbuilders. Charles begins to sink in his seat. Mr. Riverstorm looks at Charles as he shakes his head. CHARLES And what about the team? Mr. Riverstorm pauses and takes a deep breath. He puts his hand up to his mouth then slowly takes them away and says. MR. RIVERSTORM Yeh... We just dont have the money. I am dreadfully sorry. After all you were possibly one of the best navigators I could ever have. Charles pauses. A look of surprise spreads across his face. Charles gets up out of his seat and shakes Mr. Riverstorms hand. Both of them too nervous to actually look each other in the eye. Charles walks out of the room but turns around to take one last look at the office. He walks away closing the door behind him. As Charles walks threw the factory he looks at all of the unfinished ships taking the sight in because he knows that this may be the last time that he may ever see ships of this magnitude. It begins to rain while Charles walks down the street with the bag of groceries he had bought earlier in the day. INT.HOUSE-KITCHEN.NIGHT When Charles comes home he sees his sister Amelia cooking in the kitchen. She is wearing a white apron with her hair pulled back in a bun. She is siring something with a wooden spoon as Charles walks into the kitchen. AMELIA (surprised) what are you doing here? Again Charles is filled with sorrow inside. He looks like he may begin cry but doesnt tear up. He takes a deep breath. Amelia looks at him and realizes that something bad has happened. She puts down the spoon that she was cooking with onto the counter and turns back around to face Charles.

CHARLES I got fired today. Amelias eyes widen with the horrifying news. Her lip begins to tremble with rage. She undoes the apron that she was wearing and throws it on the ground. AMELIA (shouting) WHAT?! DO THEY HAVE ANY DECENCY? DO THEY HAVE ANY IDEA HOW HARD WE HAVE TO WORK TO KEEP THE FAMILY TOGETHER? Charles puts his hand up CHARLES Amelia calm down. AMELIA CALM DOWN? YOU WANT ME TO CALM DOWN. EVER SINCE MOM AND DAD DIED IT HAS BEEN YOU AND ME THAT KEEP THIS FAMILY TOGETHER. WE NOT ONLY TAKE CARE OF OURSELVES BUT THE TWINS TOO. WITHOUT US THEY WOULD BE DEAD! Amelia sits down on the chair across the way from Charles. Her hand go to her face wiping away the tears. A sniffle comes from her nose. AMELIA (crying) We were blearily making ends meet on your salary at the shipyard. Now what do we do? You wont get a job in this economy. We will need to move out, live on the streets! CHARLES Were going to be alright Amelia. I did get paid just last week, didnt I? and the rent isnt due until next month. I will find a job by then. Charles gets out of his chair and goes over to Amelia. She has her head down. Charles goes over and wraps his arm around her to give her a hug.

CHARLES Youre my little sister I wont let anything bad happen to you. EXT.HOUSE.NIGHT Charles is outside the house sitting on a bench on the porch. In his hand is a compass. He looks down at the compass and puts his finger on the glass wiping away some of the dirt that had accumulated upon it. Charles then turns the compass over to revel the name Leon Wright engraved on the back. CUT TO A man and a small boy are in the air on a small airship. The boy is shoveling some coal into a furnace under a large water tank. The man looks up and pulls a lever that creates lots of steam and the steam goes into the large air filled balloon above them. When this is over the man goes over to the edge and leans his arms upon the edge. The boy follows him and looks out into the distance and sees a vast landscape of houses everywhere. The man points at a distant house. MAN You see that is our house over there. The boy begins to grin but doesnt say a word. He just looks in the distance to his house. A look of wonder and excitement is on the boys face. The man then reaches into his pocket and takes out a compass and hands it to the boy. The boy looks back up to the man and back down at the compass. MAN This is the Wright familys most precious possession. My father was given this compass by his father, and his father gave it to him, as did his father. I think it is time that you had it. The boy turns around and watches the compass spin as he changes directions. He then takes another look at it this time turning it over to revel the name Leon Wright. The man then goes over to the boy and puts his hand on the boys shoulder. He then says.

FADE TO Charles is holding the compass in the same way that the little kid was. He looks out across the street. None of the houses lights are on. He then takes out a paper from his pocket. Then he unfolds it at takes a good look at it. The paper says Great Airship Regatta and it says that the cash prize is 30 million dollars. A look of realization comes over Charles face. He gets up off of the bench on his porch and runs away. INT.HOUSE.NIGHT Charles writes something on a piece of paper and puts it in an envelope and writes Amelias name on it. He puts the envelope on the dinning room table and walks away. INT.SHIPFIELD BUILDING.NIGHT There is a tall chain link fence surrounding the airfield. Charles is wearing black to make sure that the security cameras do not catch him breaking in. He also has a duffel bag. Charles comes up to the fence and grabs onto it. He shakes the fence to make sure that it is stable enough for him to climb over. His foot goes into the fence and he begins to climb up it. Charles comes up to one of the hangers that holds a airship. There is a chain between two handles with a lock holding it together. He reaches into the bag and takes out a pair of bolt cutters and cuts the lock from the chain. The lock falls to the ground followed by the chain. Now the door is pushed open to revel a huge airship with a big number 28 on the side. Shipfield Ships, the name of the company, is also written on the side. Then there is a voice. VERNE Hey what are you doing here? A dark figure walk out of the shadows. Its Verne. Charles has a look of terror on his face.

VERNE Are you stealing that ship? CHARLES (stuttering) Ummm.... VERNE Because I want to help. CHARLES I dont want you to help. If we get caught we are going to jail. VERNE But I dont care I want to race in the regatta. CHARLES I still cant let you help me. VERNE Well then I guess we are going to have to get the police involved arnt I. There is a long pause. Charles looks at Verne and back up to the ship. Charles looks back and forth as he picks up his duffel bang and hands it to Verne. CHARLES Alright. Charles pushes a button on the side that open up the roof on the top of the hanger. A crescent moon falls above the ship. Charles walks over to the gondola and presses a button that opens a walkway so he and Verne can get onto the ship. He and Verne go to the top deck and both shovel coal into a burner. Then they pull levers that release steam into the balloon part of the ship. Charles does this for the last burner and slowly the ship begins to take off. However Charles suddenly hears a noise. There is a man at the entrance. At a closer glance he can see its Mr. Riverstorm. MR. RIVERSTORM Thiefs! Thiefs! You come back down here and I will not call the police. Mr. Riverstorm goes over to the phone and dials the police. A grainy image appears on a monitor, however after a while it becomes clearer. It is a police officer in his uniform.

MR. RIVERSTORM Hello my name is Darrel Riverstorm the owner of Shipfield Ships. We have been robbed. Charles hears Mr. Riverstorm and knows that the police are not that far behind. CHARLES Verne go down into the engine room and put as much coal you can into the furnaces. We need to get this ship moving as fast as possible. VERNE Aye captain! Charles pauses with a puzzled look on his face. He then gives a great big smile. CHARLES I like the sound of that, Captain Charles Wright! Verne puts in more coal to increase the amount of power. Propellers begin to spin and the airship slowly begins to movie foreword. A loud siren begins to sound. Dead ahead of the airship lies a small fleet of police airships. Slowly the ship gets higher and higher. On one of the police ships the police chief commands a officer. POLICE CHIEF Aim for the envelope. We need to stop them from getting to the ocean. The police take out their guns and begin to shoot at Charles and his air ship. However he is too high and climbing too fast for them to get a clear shot. Charles has now passed over the police and is now heading for the ocean. There is a pop that Charles hears. He looks up to see that there is a bullet hole in the envelope of the ship. The ship starts to descend. Luckily Charles quickly finds a patch and fixes the hole and he flys into the horizon. INT.HOUSE.NIGHT The letter that Charles had written is on the table. Amelia is walking down the hall when out of the corner she see the letter labeled Amelia. She goes over to the letter and opens the envelope.

CHARLES VOICE Amelia, I am sorry but I need to leave. I realize this is not the greatest choice but I have decided to take Shipfield Ships airship and join the Great Airship Regatta. The prize money will be more than enough to support you me and the twins throughout our whole lives. I know the consequences for what I have done and I have come to accept them. Please realize what I have done I did for us. Remember the rent isnt due till next month so whatever you do dont pay for it. Only use the money we have for food and you should be fine Dont worry because when you see me next time we will be 30 million dollars richer. Sincerely, Charles. Amelia finishes reading the letter with tears in her eyes. She wipes off her tears and sets down the letter. The paper is stained with her tears. Amelia begins to flash back to when her and her brother were children and their father would bring a giant airship and park it over the house. Her, her brother, mother, and the twins would wave to him as he flew by. Amelia opens the door to the outside and walks out. She looks up at the sky, at the stars, at the moon. Almost like she is expecting to see him fly away. The sky is empty except for maybe a few birds. A small grin begins to form on Amelias face. AMELIA Just be safe. INT.AIRSHIP.NIGHT The airship is slowly making its way over the Atlantic ocean. Charles is in the cabin relaxing. Verne is on a bed sleeping. Charles looks over and notices a book shelf with many different charts and maps on it. But one book catches his eye. It is a simple leather bound book. Charles takes the book from the bookshelf and opens it. He is surprised to find that it is empty. So Charles goes over to the desk and opens the book to the first page. He then opes up the desk and finds a pen. He begins to write. CHARLES VOICE Captains log November 28th, I have just left Shipfield New York on a airship that I have stolen from (MORE) (CONTINUED)
