ISO 50001:2011 Energy Management System (EnMS)

A Q & A with Jerry Skaggs, UL DQS Inc. Energy Program Manager
1 Q: What are the benefits of ISO 50001:2011 Energy Management System (EnMS)? A: Benefits include: Reduced overhead costs, thus increasing profitability Enhanced competitiveness Reducing fuel consumption Increased awareness and assurance of legal, other and internal compliance requirements Reduced emissions, such as Green House Gases, particulate matter, NOx and SOx Increased efficiency of energy sources, equipment, processes and maintenance related energy uses activities 2 Q: What should you evaluate when forming your energy management plan? A. The planning clauses of the EnMS standard (4.4) outline the requirements to: Identify legal and other requirements; Conduct an Energy Review, to evaluate Current energy sources; Evaluate past and present energy use and consumption; Identify your significant energy uses, performance Estimate future energy use and consumption; and Identify, prioritize and record opportunities for improving energy performance. Conduct an Energy Baseline Identify Energy Performance Indicators (EnPI); and Establish energy objectives, targets and action plans. 3 Q: From a business perspective, what would be some key points of adopting ISO 50001? A: DOE studies indicate an average savings of 6.5% - 17%over 2 to 3 years, signifying a strong initial return on investment in an energy management system. Operationally, ISO 50001 provides a formalized structure to ensure an organizations objectives, targets and action plans related to energy use, consumption and performance improvements are met.

4 Q: Which organizations can benefit from implementing the ISO 5001:2011 Management System? A: It is applicable to any size organization seeking increasing their energy performance efficiency and increase profitability. 5 Q: What education/experience should is recommended to implement the EnMS? What should an organization familiarize itself with to prepare for implementation? A: An individual who is an ISO 9001 and 14001 Lead Auditor and / or Certified Energy Manager are recommended. Also LEED AP experience would be very helpful. Organizations should familiarize themselves with applicable regulatory requirements, EPA guidelines, ISO 14001, LEED, and the DOE Superior Energy Performance Programs. It may be helpful to explore grant programs that may support your EnMS endeavors. 6 Q: How do ISO 14001:2004 (EMS) and ISO 50001 (EnMS) Complement and Contrast with each other? A: EMS and EnMS complement each other as they share approximately 40%-45% of the same material concepts. These concepts include: scope; policy; identification of significant energy uses; legal and other requirements; objectives, targets and action plans, competency, training and awareness; communication; control of documents and records; operational control; monitoring and measurement; evaluation of compliance; corrective and preventive action; internal audits and management review. Where they differ is the EnMS requirement to measure, record, and improve energy performance, consumption and use over time. 7 Q: What is the expected timeline of adoption of ISO 5001 in North America? Globally? A: The expectation is that it will have a similar adoption rate to ISO 14001 8 Q: Where can I learn more about ISO 5001:2011? A: You can visit our website - www.ul-dqsusa.com, learn more about the ISO 50001 standard via the ANSI website - www.ansi.org, visit the U.S. Department Of Energys website on energy efficiency, www1.eere.energy.gov/office_eere/index.html, or ISO at www.iso.org. 9 Q: Where can I get a copy of the standard? A: You can obtain a copy of the ISO 50001 standard, as well as other ISO standards, at http://webstore.ansi.org/ 10 Q: How does ISO 50001 fit into Superior Energy Performance (SEP)? A: ISO 50001 is a foundation tool that an organization uses to manage their energy and along with additional validation of energy improvements, are the major components of Superior Energy Performance. SEP is a voluntary partnership between industry, government, and other organizations solely focused on improving the energy intensity of US industry. This partnership is guiding the development of a market-based Plant Certification Program. US industry has the capacity to significantly improve its overall energy performance and help meet both private-sector and national goals for energy and the environment. To expedite progress in achieving this potential an SEP partnership was developed. The SEP partnership is addressing the current need for a consistent, performance-based framework that fosters continuous progress in industrial energy efficiency. The proposed framework provides a mechanism to help individual companies assign greater value to energy efficiency improvements, independently verify resulting energy savings, receive public recognition for achievements, and "raise the bar" for industrial energy efficiency overall.
