Acute convulsions in children

This is a common acute disease that may include coma, convulsions of limbs, lockjaw,
and opisthotonus, usually appearing in children with high fever, meningitis,
encephalitis, low blood calcium, cerebral dysgenesis, epilepsy or toxic dysentery.

Treatment:

Foot massage: The massage is applied to head (1), adrenal gland (21), pituitary gland
(4), parathyroid gland (13), tonsil (45), spleen (34) and lymph nodes (upper body, 39)
reflecting areas. The tips of both thumbs are used to apply pressure or the foot is held
in one hand by the physician and the knuckle of the first interphalangeal joint of the
other index finger is used to massage the reflecting areas 3-5 times (Fig. 96).

Foot acupuncture:

1) Meridianal acupoints: At Yongquan (KI 1), Taichong (LR 3) and Zuqiaoyin (GB 44)
acupoints, a reducing acupuncture technique without moxibustion is applied and the
needles are retained for 20 minutes.
2) Extra acupoints: At Neizhiyin (EX-F 20) and Lineiting (EX- F 21) acupoints, a
reducing technique without moxibustion is applied and the needles are retained for 20
minutes.

External application of drugs:

1) Zhizi (cape-jasmine fruit) powder, Taoren (peach kernel) paste and wheat flour of
equal amounts are mixed with 1 egg white to prepare a paste for application on the
above reflecting areas to reduce fire and calm the wind.
2) The Xingren (apricot kernel) 7 pieces, Taoren (peach kernel) 7 pieces, Zhizi
(cape-jasmine fruit) 7 pieces and fine wheat flour 15 gm are pounded together to
prepare a paste for application to adrenal gland (21) and tonsil (45) reflecting areas to
clear heart fire and the downward transport qi, resolve blood stasis, tranquilize the
mind and calm the wind.
3) Huangqi (milkvetch root) 32 gin, Dangshen (asiabell) 32 gm, Fuzi (aconite lateral
root, baked) 32 gm, Baizhu (bighead Atractylodes rhizome), Kouren (nutmeg, roasted)
15 grn, Baishao (white peony root, fried with alcohol) 15 gm, Gancao (licorice, baked
with honey) 15 gin, Dingxiang (cloves) 10 gm are fried in sesame oil with Huangdan
(yellow lead) to prepare a paste for application with Rougui (cinnamon bark) powder
to the above reflecting areas to warm Zhongjiao (middle energizer) and strengthen
spleen.
