FROM THE DESK OF FR. DENNIS MILLER

Id like to begin a two-part column on the purpose of music at Mass. In the past couple of weeks, Ive had a few situations where it has become clear that its worth spending a little time reflecting on this issue. Is the purpose of music in Catholic Mass, as one person suggested, to make people smile and feel happy? Or, as another person suggested, is there really no need for music during Mass because all it does is make it longer and more drawn out? What is the purpose of music in Catholic Mass? I was taught in seminary that there are two purposes for music in Mass: music meant to accompany an action and prayers that are intended to be sung. For this week, Ill focus on the first kind. Some examples of times when we use music to accompany an action are the opening hymn, the alleluia, the hymn during preparation of gifts, the Lamb of God, the hymn during Eucharist, and the closing hymn. Despite the fact that these hymns are meant to occur while another action is happening, it doesnt mean in any way that they should be considered unimportant, particularly at Sunday Mass. For instance, the opening hymn should vocally gather us together as members of the body of Christ in the same way that the priest is completing the body of Christ by processing to the front and taking the place of Christ as head and shepherd of the church. The Alleluia accompanies the procession to read the Gospel and celebrates the unique presence of Christ in the Gospel. It is, therefore, very important that our musicians carefully choose music that keeps our minds and hearts focused on the particular celebration and not just music that they like to sing. It is also important that they choose music that is accessible to all people and not just some people. Music that is hard to sing or that only appeals to people of a certain generation doesnt belong in Mass because it alienates rather than uniting the people of God. For all of these reasons, I generally discourage people from asking music ministers that are not from our cluster to participate in liturgies, in particular weddings and funerals. If they arent Catholic, chances are they dont know the importance of congregational participation in music choice and will try to perform solos instead of inviting the people to join in prayer. Even Catholic musicians come without a knowledge of the music that our congregation is accustomed to for the Mass parts and hymns. Asking musicians who are not a part of the parish just adds to the frustration of an already frustrating day. In my next column, Ill pick up here by talking about prayers that are intended to be sung. Phone Number: St. Patricks Faith Formation office was listed in the Mason City
phone book. However, the Rectory phone number was omitted. Please make note of this number - 641-843-3215. It is also listed on the front page of the bulletin each week.
