one second; while junior Garrett
Fogo was 22nd place in 18:14,
both received medals for their
performance in the race.
This was the first race for
many of our guys, Boyne City
coach Andy Place said. Most of
the team has not run Cross Coun-
try until this year. We felt good
about our overall performance;
we were running without five of
our guys, including two of our
top five.It was a good baseline to
see what we need to work on.
Other race times for the Ram-
bler boys, were Kyle Sitkins in
20:25; Jeff VanHove, 20:28; Ethan
Habasco, 21:02; Parker Stolt,

said. We have to work on our
endurance, but we have some
good potential.This is a little
early in the season to race and
the girls responded to the chal-

TRAVERSE CITY The Lady
Ramblers picked up right where
they left off last season, and
proved that they can run with the
big dogs as they competed in the
annual TC Central tournament on
August 24.
Boyne went 3-1 in pool play,
beating Glen Lake, 25-17, 25-6 and
host TC Central, 25-17, 25-21 before
falling to Our Lady of the Lakes
21-25, 17-25; and then defeating
Pine River 25-17, 25-18.
In bracket play, the Ramblers
downed Elk Rapids, 25-18, 25-10 be-
fore falling in the semifinals, 18-
25, and 21-25 to Walled Lake
Central.
This year we decided to go to
Traverse City Central on opening
weekend to see some different
teams, Boyne City coach Casie
Parker said. There was some
tough competition there and tall
girls.
Kylie Hicks finished with 50
kills, 32 digs and 10 blocks to lead
the Ramblers, while Heather
Nichols added 90 assists. Paige
Hornbeck had 23 kills and 23 digs
to go with her 10 ace serves;
Courtney Weldon had 39 digs and
nine aces; and Erin Baker fin-
ished with 63 digs.
Emily Evans and Hannah
Brilinski finished the day serving
at 100 percent.
I was very proud of the girls
today, coach Parker added. We
played some of the best volleyball
weve ever played today against
some big teams. Defensively we
played aggressive and picked up a
lot of balls. Erin Baker made
some huge plays for us as our
libro, and Courtney Weldon also
moved well for us defensively.

PELLSTON In the Rayders sea-
son opening contests, they traveled to
Pellston where the Hornets hosted
their annual tournament on August
24.
In pool play, Charlevoix defeated
Bay City 25-11, 25-19 and Harbor
Springs 25-11, 25-11 before falling to
Pellston 25-23, 25-23 in a pair of close
matches; the Rayders then fell to On-
away 25-18, 25-19 and then ended pool
play with a pair of victories over Cen-
tral Lake 25-18, 25-19.
In bracket play, Charlevoix fell to
Kingsley 25-19, 25-21 to go 3-3 on the
day.
Not bad for our first outing, but we
still had intentions of getting farther
in bracket play, coach Audra Randall
said. Our team has really good chem-
istry and we expect that we will take
care of the ball a little better on serv-
ing, defense and out of system balls
in our next outing.
Madeline Boss earned All-Tourna-
ment Team with 32 kills, 85 percent
serve reception, 35 digs and 12 aces.
Gloria Greene finished with 46 as-
sists, 13 aces; while Madi Carey per-
formed well with 23 kills; Jennaca
Holecheck added 24 digs, 14 kills and
seven aces; and Olivia Storm had 32
assists, 14 aces and 93 percent serving
accuracy.
All the girls have a great passion to
step their game up and are willing to
work hard to accomplish that, Ran-
dall noted. I have three seniors re-
turning, Madi Carey, Kelsey Pischner
and Jennaca Holecheck, all being big
contributors on the court. Madeline
Boss and Gloria Greene are our re-
turning juniors. The rest of the team
is new to Varsity and we also have
four sophomores which have a lot of
talent to add to the team.

ment in Leland on Thursday, August

allow the heat index to
drop below 104, the Ram-
blers and Blazer finally got
underway, and Boyne City
came out on top 4-0 victors
on August 26.
The contest remained
scoreless up to the first

Kartes got the Ramblers on
the board first on a Corey
Bohnet assist and Nico
Backus assed an unas-
sisted goal a minute later.
Alan Bielas and Bohnet
added a pair of early sec-
ond half goals to seal the
win for Boyne. Jared Flem-
ing and Bielas picked up
the assists.
Coach Nick Baic credited
midfielders Ben Halstead

BOYNE CITY They may be
young with only five seniors, but
the current group of Ramblers
experienced great success last
season as Boyne reached the play-
offs after a short absence to finish
an 8-2 campaign.
Coach David Hills leads the
way again for the Ramblers and
looks to build upon the success of
last season, while welcoming new
challenges.
One of those new challenges
comes in the season opener when
the Ramblers travel to Maple City
Glen Lake on August 29. It was
the Lakers that ended Boynes
season in the Division VI pre-dis-
trict last October.
Itll be a real challenging
opener, coach Hills said. They
looked good in our scrimmage; it
will be a great test for us.
Boyne City will suit up 20 stu-
dent-athletes, including quite a
few returning players that saw
significant minutes and played
big roles for the Ramblers.
Those returnees are: Maceo
Vroman, Corey Redman, Bradley
Fouchia, Malik Smith, and
Michael Dohm to name a few.
Coach Hills also noted that Max
Cuper and Cole Butler have
looked good so far in camp.
With good attendance this sum-
mer, the Ramblers played a lot of
7-on-7, participated in a camp in
July, and their weight
training/conditioning is a year
around program.
Look for the typical brand of
Boyne football each time these
Ramblers take the field.
Were not real big, although
we have a few kids with some
good size, Hills noted. But
were going to play to our
strengths which will be speed and
athleticism, and hopefully use
that to our advantage.
Ramblers return a youthful, yet experienced team

CHARLEVOIX The Rayders
have hired one of their own to
help right the ship.
After a subpar 2012 football sea-
son that saw the Rayders finish
well below their normal average
for wins in a season and follow-
ing the resignation of Joe Pruch-
nicki, Charlevoix found
themselves looking for a head
coach for the third time in less
than a year.
The man selected for the job is
former Rayder graduate Ron
Bindi. Coach Bindi graduated in
1971 from Charlevoix and boasts
30 plus years of coaching, which
includes stints in Texas, Illinios
and other parts of Michigan, in-
cluding high school Division II
and III and was also a coach in
the Arena Football League with
the Grand Rapids Rampage.
His most recent coaching job
was last season in Bellaire where
he lead the Eagles to a 9-4 record
and an appearance in the eight-
man football state finals where
they fell to Deckerville 14-12.
Bellaire was eligible for eight-
man football due to their small
enrollment. The Eagles went 25-9
in Bindis three years coaching
eight-man football, where he
coached five seasons in total.
After retiring from teaching
this spring, Bindi was encour-
aged by community members to
apply for the coaching vacancy
and after the Rayder screening
process was complete, he was
hired for the job.
I applied, and was fortunate
enough to get it, Bindi said.
One of our goals is were look-
ing to bring some enthusiasm
back to Rayder football.
After being awarded the posi-
tion, Bindi quickly got a summer
program started for weightlifting
and conditioning and it seemed to
draw quite a few participants.
We had morning workouts,
and there were usually around 30
kids, grades 9-12, in the weight
room every day, the coach said.
We had a solid core group and it
was well attended.
The varsity roster will be rep-
resented by 20 Rayders, and the
JV program will boast 26-28 play-
ers.
The coach looks to run the
triple option offense and play ag-
gressively on the defensive side of
the ball.
We need to be fundamentally
strong, mentally strong and phys-
ically strong and in shape, coach
Bindi added. We feel we are well
on the way to accomplishing two
of the three things, we just need
to concentrate on the fundamen-
tal part and keep everyone on the
same page.
While there isnt that one
standout leader in the bunch, the
Rayders will take on more of a
group effort.
There are a lot of leaders
across the board, some from each
class (9-12), some vocal, some by
example, whether it be by their
actions, attendance, enthusiasm
or their support of other kids, we
have a real good group of kids
here.
While there may be a new head
coach, Bindi said a majority of
last seasons coaching staff is
back and have helped bring a lot
of cohesiveness and he considers
that a blessing.
Its been great, if something
has come up the core coaching
group can give me some insight
to the kids and what has hap-
pened in the past, its been real
positive.

EAST JORDAN The Red
Devils are working hard and
looking to change things for the
better.
Returning for East Jordan are
three-year starters; Ben Walton,
Noah Bacchus and Tim Schut
along with Weston Swanson and
Will Harris.
Walton has led the team in
tackles the last two seasons,
while Bacchus led in offensive
yards and Schut was second on
the team in both tackles and of-
fensive yards.
Swanson and Harris return to
the trenches and look to supply
the needed strength up front.
Coach Allan Peterson notes
that the Red Devils are changing
a few things up this season and
one of them will be more of a
power running game, while on
the defensive side, not much
should change.
We had pretty good atten-
dance at our offensive camp as
well as a real good bunch at the
defensive camp, coach Peterson
said. Its all voluntary so I was
happy.
East Jordan will suit up 24 Red
Devils this season and possibly
adding to their depth chart as
new exchange students have ex-
pressed some interest in the
game.
This bunch has worked hard
to change things, Peterson
noted. So we will see; were all
excited to get going.

Stress is the condition or
feeling a person has when
they perceive that de-
mands exceed the personal
and social resources the in-
dividual is able to mobilize,
according to Richard
Lazarus. For some people,
stress is a part of daily life.
Stress can be both positive
and negative. Stress can
motivate and improve per-
formance. Chronic stress
can be detrimental, both
physically and psychologi-
cally. What is considered
stressful and how one re-
sponds to stress will vary
from one person to another.
Researchers Holmes and
Rahe found that persons
who experience more stress
are also more likely to be-
come ill. The Holmes and
Rahe stress scale was devel-
oped and validated in 1967
as a means of quantifying
the impact of various
stressful life events. If you
missed the scale last week
and want to know how you
would score, you can find
the scale here:
http://www.stress.org/hol
mes-rahe-stress-inventory/.
When we are under
stress, our bodies respond
as though preparing for bat-
tle or escape. When stress
continues at a high level for
an extended time period,
our nervous system is acti-
vated over and over. If we
dont take steps to reduce
the stress or reduce the in-
tensity of the response, our
immune systems are less
able to defend our bodies
from infection and we are at
risk of a variety of illness.
Stress can also increase
our risk of illness by lead-
ing to sleepless nights and
poor dietary habits. Stress
is one of the leading causes
of insomnia and stress can
lead people to overeat or eat
very little. Smokers under
stress may increase their
tobacco use. Chronic stress
can damage blood vessels,
increase inflammation and
result in atherosclerosis.
Stress increases the risk of
headaches, digestive prob-
lems, diabetes, and a range
of other health issues. Per-
sonality factors and our
ability to respond to stress
can reduce the health risks
of stress. Next time, I will
suggest ways to manage the
stress in your life.
For a future article about
achieving goals, think
about your big goals and an-
swer this question: What
would you do if you knew
you would not fail? Send

With autumn nearly upon us and
winter rapidly approaching, youre
probably not spending much time
thinking about your lawn. But au-
tumn, with its cooler temperatures
and occasional rainfall, is the ideal
time to prepare your lawn for
spring.
Many homeowners think lawns
need less care in the fall because the
grass grows slower. In fact, just the
opposite is true. During this time of
year, grass is busily absorbing en-
ergy, moisture and nutrients to pre-
pare for a long, dormant winter.
Give it a little attention now, and
youll be rewarded with a lush,
healthy spring lawn. Just follow
these six tips.
1. Keep on mowing
Continue to water and mow your
lawn, as needed, throughout the
fall. As the season draws to a close,
drop the mowers blade to its lowest
setting for the last two cuttings of
the year. That will allow more sun-
light to reach the crown of the
grass, and there will be less leaf to
turn brown during the winter.
As you lower the blade, just re-
member not to trim off more than
one-third of the grass blades at any
time. If necessary, gradually lower
the cutting height until the time of
the final two cuttings.
2. Aerate the soil
Fall is also an ideal time to aerate
your lawn so that oxygen, water and
fertilizer can easily reach the roots.
You can rent a gas-powered, walk-
behind lawn aerator for about $70
per day. The self-propelled machine
will quickly punch holes into the
soil and extract plugs of dirt. If you
have a large yard say, more than 3
or 4 acres and dont feel like aer-
ating it yourself, hire a landscaping
contractor.

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado
1500 and High Country and the
GMC Sierra and Sierra Denali
1500 are the first pickup trucks
to receive the highest possible
five-star Overall Vehicle Score
for safety since the National
Highway Traffic Safety Adminis-
tration changed its New Car As-
sessment Program for the 2011
model year. NHTSA only tested
the crew cab models of Silverado
and Sierra. Chevrolet and GMC
expect crew cab models to ac-
count for 60 percent of their 2014
light duty full-size pickup truck
sales.
Safety is as important to
truck buyers as it is to car buy-
ers, said Gay Kent, GM general
director of Vehicle Safety and
Crashworthiness. Silverado
and Sierra set a benchmark for
pickup truck safety by offering a
full array of advanced features
designed to protect occupants be-
fore, during and after a colli-
sion.
Silverado and Sierra offer
fully boxed frames, extensive use
of high-strength steel, and sev-
eral segment-exclusive safety
features are available, including
Forward Collision Alert, Lane
Departure Warning, and Safety
Alert Seat.
- Safety Alert Seat warns the
driver of potential traffic danger
using directional vibration
pulses from the seat cushion.
The patented warning approach
is tied to all of the on-board
crash avoidance systems.
- Forward collision alert tech-
nology helps prevent frontal
crashes by alerting the driver
when the truck is closing in on a
vehicle ahead too quickly, giving
him or her additional time to
react and avoid a crash.
- Lane Departure Warning
technology alerts the driver
when the truck drifts over a lane
line when traveling at least 35
mph.
- Rear Vision Camera with Dy-
namic Guidelines allows the
driver, when in reverse, to view
objects directly behind the vehi-
cle via the radio screen in the
center stack, allowing for easier
parking and backing maneuvers.
- New, standard lap belt preten-
sions in the front-seat outboard
safety belts.
- Six standard air bags and 360-
degree sensor system, including
dual-stage frontal air bags, head-
curtain side-impact air bags
with rollover protection, and
seat-mounted side-impact air
bags.
- Trailer-sway control that
works with StabiliTrak to pro-
vide the driver with additional
assistance when towing a trailer.
When it senses trailer sway, it in-
tervenes with braking and/or re-
duced engine power to bring the
trailer under control.
- Four-wheel, four-channel, an-
tilock disc brakes (ABS) that
help provide straight, more con-
trolled stops by preventing wheel
lock-up in most road conditions.
- OnStar is available, using
GPS and cellular phone technol-
ogy to automatically call for help
in the event of crash. OnStar
service also includes MyLink
mobile apps, which offer vehicle
information and OnStar services
via the customers smartphone.
