Volume 37 Number 27 September 8, 2013

Eastminster Presbyterian Church, Columbia, South Carolina

Dear Eastminster Family, (The following was sent in Fridays E-news but I think it bears repeating here in the Update. If you dont currently receive the E-news and would like to, please contact Thelma at tcarter@eastminsterpres.org and ask to be added to the list.) Perhaps you, like me, have read of the conflict in our city regarding treatment of people that are homeless. As I understand our Lords will as revealed in Scripture, it is wrong for any person, including people who are homeless, to harass or intimidate other people. Similarly, removing and relocating people who are treating others respectfully, just because they happen to be homeless, is equally wrong and antithetical to whom we are called to be as followers of Jesus Christ. Yes, we want our city center to be a welcoming and safe environment. We are also called by God to live in community, being particularly mindful of people that are most vulnerable. Im grateful that Eastminster is positively engaged in reaching out to hurting people by serving lunch at the Washington Street UMC Soup Cellar, washing the feet of people who are homeless on Tuesdays, and by helping those who are working to change their lives through the recovery and rebuilding programs offered at Transitions. Thank you to those of you who, by serving, are bearing witness to the way of Christ. Even as we seek to be supportive of people that are homeless, is it reasonable to expect respectful and appropriate behavior? Yes. Even as our city leaders seek to build commerce, is it reasonable to be respectful of all people? Yes. Please join me in praying that our community comes together to live and act in ways that honor the very God who gives us life. In joy, Brad

Update for September 8, 2013

The PEACE Service offers you a place to come away and be quiet before the Lord. It is a service where we pray for all kinds of needs and celebrate the Lords Supper together. If you desire a quiet place of worship, join us at 5:00 p.m. in the Adult Reception Hall. A nursery is available in the Drop-In nursery rooms in the CLC. We are again organizing another exciting Eastminster basketball season. So remember to include us in your familys plans for this fall. Youth Basketball Registration started on September 1st. Look for your registration form in the E-News. Teams will be available for boys and girls 2nd grade through high school, and will be formed based on the availability of coaches and gym space. All current EPC youth basketball coaches and anyone interested in coaching or helping with basketball, please contact Bill Ketchin at 256-1654 or bketchin@ eastminsterpres.org. Eastminster is seeking writers interested in sharing their skills with the church by writing short devotionals based on scripture passages from the book of Exodus. If you would like to participate, please e-mail Mark Durrett, and he will assign you a scripture passage for your devotional. Care Teams are groups of 6-8 people that work together to provide logistics support to Eastminster members in need. Examples include: transportation to appointments, running errands, making meals, or simply sitting with someone so a caregiver can get out. For more information contact Rev. Lynn Grandsire at lgrandsire@eastminsterpres.org. A training session will take place on September 28. Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us every day.
