What is CAM?
The terms complementary medicine refers to an approach or working together with
conventional medicine. The term alternative means to in place of conventional medicine.
Many people use complementary medicine along conventional treatments (National Center for
Complementary and Alternative Medicine, NCCAM, May 2013).

HAND OUT WEEK 2

Acupuncture Incorporates the stimulation of specific points in the body and uses very
thin needles in the skin.
Massage Therapy- Technique that manipulates tissues of the body.
Meditation A technique that teaches how to focus and mindfulness or transcendental
meditation.
Movement Therapies- Eastern and Western movement based approach techniques
such as the Feldenkrais method, Alexander technique or Pilates.
Relaxation Breathing exercises, guided imagery. A technique use to help the body
naturally relax.
Tai Chi Incorporates traditional Chinesne Medicine and combines meditation, postures
and coordinated breathing.
Yoga Combines breathing techniques and meditation. (National Center for

Breathing techniques to help


Breathing can help release stress hormones in the body. Breathing techniques are used to
meditate, used in preparation of and during labor, used by musician and by you and me.
Breathing can help release tension, expand the diaghpgram, open the intestinal activities, help
with organs and the nervous system. (Center for Spirituality and Healing, University of
Minnessota).

BREATHING EXERCISE:

(Practice two to three times a week) Start with 5 minutes, then gradually increase to ten, fifteen
and more.

Find a quite place in your mind. Close your eyes. Relax your body.

Take a deep breath in (nose) and exhale (mouth) slowly and fully.

Inhale again, breathing from your diaphragm.

Take 6-10 more deep breaths slowly and focus on your breathing. The rise and fall of
your diaphragm.

If your mind begins to wonder, bring your thoughts back to your breathing.
