Constipation

In patients with constipation, the stool is dry and hard, defecation is difficult, and the
time between bowel movements is prolonged.

Differential diagnosis: Patients with heat pathogens may suffer from constipation with
dry stool passed once after several days, abdominal pain, hot body and flushed face.
Patients with cold pathogens may suffer from difficult bowel movement, cold and
pain in abdomen, and cold limbs. Patients with qi stagnation may suffer from frequent
belching, difficult bowel movement, and distension and pain in abdomen. Patients
with qi deficiency may suffer from difficult defecation, and fatigue after bowel
movement. Patients with blood deficiency may suffer from difficult defecation with
dry stool, sallow complexion, dizziness and heart palpitations. Patients with Yin
deficiency may suffer from difficult defecation with dry stool, dryness in mouth and
throat, body leanness, flushed cheeks, and low tidal fever in the afternoon. And
patients with Yang deficiency may suffer from difficult bowel movement, cold limbs,
preference for hot and aversion to cold.

Treatment:

Foot massage: The massage may be applied to rectum (31), anus (32), ascending,
transverse and descending colon (28, 29 and 30) reflecting areas (Fig. 53).

Foot acupuncture: Meridianal acupoints: At J iexi (ST 41), Neiting (ST 44), Gongsun
(SP 4), Shangqiu (SP 5) and Rangu (KI 2) acupoints, a strong reducing technique is
applied to patients with cold or heat pathogens or with qi stagnation; a balanced
reinforce-reducing technique is applied to patients with deficiency of Yang, Yin, qi or
blood, the needles are retained for 20 minutes, and moxibustion after acupuncture
may be applied to patients with cold pathogens or with deficiency of Yang, qi or
blood.
