International Advanced Level January 2014 examinations Entry unit and cash-in codes
We understand the importance of entering your students for the correct examinations, so in preparation for the first International Advanced Level examinations in January 2014, we are writing to provide further information to help you make the correct entries using the appropriate entry codes. Please read and use this information in conjunction with the IAL Eligibility Rules in the Information Manual (page 80) 1. For students who must complete and cash in their A level course in January 2014 Students who have banked GCE units up to June 2013 and who MUST complete their A level courses in January 2014 must use the transitional unit codes below in Business Studies, Economics, Mathematics, English Literature, Psychology and Religious Studies with appropriate cash-in codes. The examinations will be based on the current GCE 2008 specifications. The award will be IAL. These transitional unit codes are valid only for the January 2014 examination series and must be used with the corresponding cash-in codes. Results achieved in these units cannot be used with results from future examination series.

3. Students with banked GCE units up to June 2013 and switching to IAL to complete their A
level course Students who have already taken and banked GCE units up to June 2013 can combine any of their eligible units with relevant IAL units to complete their A level course. The award will be IAL. This combination is allowed in January 2014, June 2014, January 2015 and June 2015 series of examinations. GCE units achieved in June 2014 and beyond cannot be combined with IAL units . Students must continue with their GCE A level course. 4. Biology, Chemistry and Physics Students who are taking IAL Biology, Chemistry and Physics will continue to take the externally assessed unit 3 (previously unit 7) and unit 6 (previously unit 8). This is the 100% externally assessed qualification with no coursework. Students previously taking the GCE Biology, Chemistry and Physics without coursework should be entered using the IAL codes as it is no longer possible to take GCE without coursework. If a student completes a mixture of alternative written paper and coursework, in units 3 and 6, the award will be IAL. A student must complete coursework in both unit 3 and unit 6 to be awarded a GCE. From 2014, all students who sit examinations in January will automatically be awarded an IAL in each subject. 5. Re-sit Students can re-sit each IAL unit once before certification. The higher unit mark of the 2 attempts will be used to calculate the overall grade. For example, if a student takes Core Mathematics 12 in January 2014 he or she may re-sit the unit in June 2014 and the higher unit mark will automatically be selected to calculate the subject grade. 6.
