Market Synopsis Indices end down, but off intraday lows Stock indices ended down, but off intraday lows on account of short covering and long rollovers ahead of expiry of September futures contract tomorrow. Nifty ended at 5873.85, down 18.60 points or 0.3% and Sensex closed at 19856.24, down 63.97 points or 0.3% Shares of banks, oil and gas, and fast moving consumer goods companies fell while those of power, metal, pharmaceutical and capital goods gained. Power Grid Corp of India, Cipla, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, NTPC, Hindalco Industries, and Bharat Heavy Electricals rose 1-9%. Hindustan Unilever, HDFC Bank, DLF, and Bharat Petroleum Corp fell 1-3%. Nifty Rollovers NSE Top Gainers Nifty rollovers were higher than the three-month average at around 52%, and market wide rollovers at around 55% were also above average. Rollovers in Bank Nifty were 46% on a provisional basis. Buzzing Stocks State Bank of India snapped a two-day losing streak, rising nearly 3% to 1,692 on build-up of long positions and short covering ahead of expiry of September futures contract. Hindustan Petroleum Corp, Bharat Petroleum Corp and Indian Oil Corp declined 1-4% following comments by Oil Minister M. Veerappa Moily that there is no proposal as of now to raise diesel prices. Moily said though the rising fuel subsidy burden remains a major concern, as of now, the hike in diesel prices would be calibrated between 45-50 paise per litre per month. This would mean that concerns over rising under recoveries of these companies would continue for a longer period. Shares of Tilaknagar Industries were down 5% at 55 on a report company has come under the Income Tax Department's scanner after its survey raised doubts over the mega project status claimed by the company for its Shrirampur distillery. The stock had slumped 11.2% to 51.45 in early trade. A report in The Economic Times stated that company had used fake bills to inflate its capital outlay for claiming the status that makes it eligible for sales tax subsidy of about 2.5 billion as per the findings of the tax department based on a survey carried out in March.
