About the Workshop

As Indian economy is diversifying and undergoing significant structural changes, road transport is growing at a rapid pace. It currently accounts for nearly 80% of the total passenger movement and around 60% of the total freight movement. Pavements, which bear the brunt of heavy loads of modern vehicles, are a costly component of the road cost. India preferred flexible pavements in the past mainly due to amenability to stage construction, lower initial cost etc. However, with plenty of modernization program including construction of expressways and four laning of major corridors, various Government agencies are re-appraising their past strategies and are looking at concrete roads and concrete overlays as superior and viable alternative. Concrete, as a road pavement material, has many principal advantages such as longer life, maintenance free performance, good riding quality, good abrasion resistance, weather and skid resistant, better reflectivity and visibility characteristics, fuel savings and enhanced economy of life cycle cost etc. However, with the advancement in concrete technology, road paving machineries & equipments, and construction techniques, the collection and dissemination of knowledge on concrete roads will help in adopting correct practices in design, construction and maintenance of roads, which will lead to efficient use of materials, thus avoiding costly failures. This one day work shop aims to disseminate information on the do's and dont's in the construction of concrete roads and concrete overlays. It is highly useful for the officials of Corporations, Municipal Administrations, State and National Highways, and policy makers for whom the annual maintenance and repair of flexible pavements is a night mare. Contractors, too, are the likely beneficiaries of this program as this will help them to weed out the wrong practices and adopt the correct ones to ensure long, durable and sustainable concrete roads and concrete overlays.

colleges and universities. ICI conducts two branded international events at regular frequency. The Asian Conference on Ecstasy in Concrete (ACECON) was held on three occasions, Bangalore (2000), Mumbai (2005) and Chennai (2010). Similarly the Innovative World of Concrete (IWC) was another international event which was held on four occasions, Bangalore (1993), Kolkata (1998), Pune (2003) and Delhi (2008).
