Data Center vs. Central Office

Data centers are fundamentally different from central offices. Central offices primarily consist of trunks and loops that are terminated and switched to connect customers and businesses to the rest of the world. Data centers focus on receiving, storing, exchanging, and transmitting data for e-commerce applications and web hosting. Consequently, the two spaces have different equipment, different standards, and different needs. Instead of the telephone switches, ultra high-speed singlemode multiplexing, and digital cross-connects of the central office, data centers contain servers, multimode routers, Ethernet patch panels, storage disk arrays, and mainframe computers. Instead of Telcordia standards commonly used to qualify spaces and equipment for central offices, data centers follow the TIA-942 Telecommunications Infrastructure Standards for Data Centers. Instead of solid concrete floors and overhead steel crosswork to support cabling and cooling in the central office, the data center is typically situated on a plenum raised floor with under-floor cabling.

A Typical Data Center

106620AE

Despite the many differences, both central offices and data centers have similar reliability expectations. Central offices have always required 5-9s availability because of their critical role in providing the communications backbone for the entire world. The increased demands from customers now have carrier data centers requiring that same level of availability. While downtime in a typical enterprise LAN can mean inconvenience, downtime in a central office or data center can result in a significant catastrophe that impacts the bottom line. For carrier data centers, downtime not only impacts the revenue of the service provider, but can also impact the revenue of the thousands of companies that collocate their equipment there. Thats why both central offices and data centers require full redundancy for all systems.

Data Center Standards

For the past 20 years, standards have been the cornerstone of ensuring proper design, installation, and performance of any network. Telcordia has set the standards for the telecom industry with central office work being performed per Telcordia GR1275 CORE (Installation) and GR1373 CORE (Quality) standards. The first standard to specifically address data center infrastructure is the Telecommunications Industry Associations TIA-942 Telecommunications Infrastructure Standards for Data Centers. This standard references various sections of the Telcordia standards but primarily covers site space and layout, cabling infrastructure, and reliability, and it is especially intended for use by data center designers early in the building development process.

The Evolution of the Data Center
A large part of TIA-942 covers specific functional areas, which helps to define equipment placement and floor spaces for assisting in overall organization and architecture. Designing a carrier data center with these functional areas anticipates growth and creates an environment where applications and equipment can be added with minimal downtime and disruption. According to TIA-942, a data center should include the following key functional areas:

Front Cabinets

Cabinets

Rear

Cabinets

Data Connectivity Solutions

Equipment Distribution Area (EDA) Hot aisle/cold aisle configuration The EDA is the space allocated for end equipment, including computer systems and telecommunications equipment. Often referred to as the server farm, the EDA typically has racks and cabinets placed in an alternating pattern to create "hot" and "cold" aisles, a configuration that effectively dissipates heat from electronics by allowing cold air from the cold aisle to wash over the equipment where it is then expelled out the back into the hot aisle. Zone Distribution Area (ZDA) The ZDA is located between the horizontal distribution area and the EDA to enable frequent reconfiguration and flexibility. The ZDA can be as simple as an interconnect panel in each equipment frame in the EDA, or it can be free standing frames adjacent to the equipment rack line-up. The ZDA cannot contain any cross-connects or active equipment. Horizontal Distribution Areas (HDA) The HDA is used to serve equipment areas when the horizontal cross-connect is not located in the main distribution area. It is essentially the distribution point for horizontal cabling, housing cross-connects and active equipment for distributing cable to the equipment distribution area. The HDA typically includes LAN and SAN switches and KVM switches for the end equipment located in the EDA. Main Distribution Area (MDA) The MDA is a centrally located area that houses the main cross-connect, which is the central point of distribution for the data center structured cabling system. The MDA may include a horizontal crossconnect (HC) when equipment areas are served directly from the MDA. Every data center has an MDA, and core routers and switches for LAN, SAN, and PBX are placed there because it is the hub of the cabling infrastructure for the entire data center. Entrance Room This is the location for access provider demarcation hardware and equipment, as well as the interface between the data center structured cabling system and inter-building cabling. The entrance room interfaces with the equipment through the MDA. Data centers can have multiple entrance rooms to provide additional redundancy or to avoid exceeding maximum cable lengths for access provider circuits. A major difference between the carrier data center and enterprise LAN is the need to accommodate multiple carriers entering the data center. Data Center Cabling System The data center cabling system is a cabling infrastructure designed to support a multi-product, multivendor environment. It includes horizontal cabling, backbone cabling, pathways to protect and manage the cabling, and inter-connects and cross-connects. The functional areas of the data center are connected via backbone and horizontal cabling in such a way to prevent exceeding maximum cable lengths. Backbone cabling is usually fiber optic cabling and provides connections between MDA, HDAs, and Entrance Rooms. Horizontal cabling is often unshielded twisted-pair copper but is increasingly fiber optic cabling. It provides connections between HDAs, ZDA, and EDA.

ADC has identified and developed solutions for every functional area of the data center. We offer the latest plenum and riser fiber optic and copper cabling technologies for linking areas and connecting to the outside world. Innovations like TracerLight fiber jumpers enable visual tracing of patch cords for quick termination identification in the horizontal distribution areas while our fiber panels provide termination, storage, splice management in the equipment distribution area and entrance room. In the main distribution area, ADCs Optical Distribution Frame fits a variety of termination, splice, and storage applications while our plug-and-play MPO cassettes ensure rapid installation and maximum uptime.

The Importance of Cable Management

As service providers expand their data centers and implement more equipment to transport highbandwidth services, the amount of cabling increases. Furthermore, unlike the central office, carrier data centers experience more moves, adds, and changes as the needs of customers continually evolve. In this environment, cable management is critical. The manner in which cables are connected, terminated, routed, spliced, stored, and handled directly impacts reliability and availability, and more importantly, profitability. The functional areas of the data center are best connected using a highly structured, planned approach to cabling that meets the needs of all equipment and enables maintenance, disaster recovery, and rapid implementation of new services. The approach should also establish a more permanent infrastructure for power, cooling, bonding and grounding, pathways, and connectivity systems. The primary elements of a proper cable management system include: bend radius protection cable routing paths cable accessibility Physical protection of fiber and copper cables. Executing these concepts in the carrier data center can result in a successful network that is less expensive to own and operate over the long haul. Bend Radius Protection Maintaining proper bend radius throughout cable routing paths is critical to maintaining performance and reliability in the data center. Bend radius protection is Optical Fiber probably the single most important element of fiber cable Light Pulse management. When fiber cabling is bent beyond the minimum bend radius, it can cause microbending or macrobending of individual fibers that allow light to escape the signal path, resulting in signal attenuation. More severe bends can break fiber strands completely, resulting in signal loss. Pathways must maintain proper bend radius at all points where the cable makes a bendboth at initial installation and when cables are accessed or added. If a tensile load is applied to the cable, such as when more cables are added to the system, the possibility of bend radius violation increases. The minimum bend radius varies depending on the Light Pulse specific type of cable, but in general, the minimum bend radius for fiber is 1.5 inches or not less than ten times the outer diameter. New reduced bend radius fiber can be bent to 15mm (0.590 inch) bend radius, but that does not eliminate Optical Fiber the need for proper cable management.

The Importance of Cable Management
Intuitive Cable Routing Paths Cable routing paths are directly related to maintaining proper bend radius because improper routing of cables is one of the major causes of bend radius violations. Cable routing paths must therefore maintain proper bend radius and be clearly defined and intuitive to follow. They should also enable easy deployment, separation, reduced congestion, and room for growth. This is especially important in the areas of the data center that contain large volumes of cables.

Cabling paths also have a direct impact on cooling, both in racks and under the raised floor. In racks and cabinets, equipment takes up the majority of horizontal space within the cabinet, and its important to ensure ample space for cabling so as not to impede airflow through the cabinet. It is recommended to maintain at least 6 inches of available recess at the front of the cabinet for fiber and 8 inches for copper. Well-managed routing paths for cabling under the floor can also help to maintain proper airflow, which is critical for removing excess heat and maintaining reliable operation of equipment. Cable and Connector Access Connectors and cables should be easily defined and accessed with minimal disruption to adjacent connections and cable. The accessibility of cables and connectors can mean the difference between a network reconfiguration time of 20 minutes per connection and one of over 90 minutes, which has an enormous impact on cost and reliability in the carrier data center. In a copper cabling cross-connect located in the horizontal distribution area, a central patching location provides a logical and easy-to-manage infrastructure whereby all network elements have permanent equipment cable connections that once terminated, are never handled again. In this scenario, all modifications, rerouting, upgrades, and maintenance activities are accomplished using patch cord connections on the front of the cross-connect systems. The cost-effective advantages to deploying centralized patching include reduced time required for reconfigurations, ability to make changes at the patching field rather than moving sensitive equipment connections, and reduced risk of down time with the ability to isolate network segments for troubleshooting and quickly reroute circuits in a disaster recovery situation. Physical Protection Damage to cabling can cause network downtime, lost money, and many headaches for service providers. Maintaining separation of cable types in pathways is a must. Horizontal pathways should be designed such that UTP and coaxial cable are separated from fiber to protect fiber from damage and ease tracing. Heavier copper cables can crush or cause microbends in the fiber. Routing fiber in its own trough pathway system will best protect it from damage; however, it is also unacceptable to allow a pile of fiber cable to exceed two inches. Beyond that point, the weight of the bundle will surpass the crush tolerance limit of the fiber at the bottom of the stack, resulting in damage and signal attenuation. Power cables must also be separated from copper data cables by a minimum of 12 inches to help reduce noise induction on the copper cables. Common and ample vertical and horizontal cable management installed both within and between rack frames ensures effective cable management and provides for orderly growth. Built-in jumper storage panels within the rack minimize the number of required jumper lengths and maintain the proper fiber bend radius. Jumper Storage Panels simplify frame installation, in turn saving money by reducing the inventory of different jumper lengths. Unmanaged patch cord slack should also be avoided. Allowing cables to hang unprotected from the back of equipment can cause exposed cables to easy to snag, which can result in damage to the connector or cable itself, not to mention loss of network access. Additionally, over time the weight of hanging cables can cause bends outside the acceptable limit.

Additional Considerations
Cable Types: Category 6 vs. Augmented Category 6 The TIA-942 standard recommends Category 6 (Cat 6) as the minimum standard for data center installation. This cable offers limited support for 10GBase-T up to 37 meters unmitigated per TSB-155) Augmented Category 6 is a newly ratified standard, required when full support for 10GBase-T is required up to 100 meters in standard operation and 30 meters for short-reach mode.

The Need for Pre-terminated Plug-and-Play MPO Solutions As enterprises implement more fiber optic cabling to support bandwidth and storage requirements, it is crucial to understand the various fiber termination methods. Plug-and-Play MPO connectors are high-density, multi-fiber connectors that terminate up to 12 fivers in one connector approximately the same size of one SC-style fiber connector. MPO cassettes include an MPO interface on one side broken out to 12 individual fiber interfaces on the other side. These cassettes can be deployed in an optical distribution frame for higher density applications or in fiber panels to connect the main distribution area (MDA) to the equipment distribution area (EDA) in the data center. These cables are pre-terminated in the factory with MPO connectors on both ends and purchased in predetermined lengths. They are typically easier to manage than ribbon cables and can be quickly connected to the MPO plug-and-play cassettes at the cross- or inter-connect in numerous areas throughout the data center. This method eliminates the need for on-site fiber termination and splicing, which translates into faster fiber connections in high-density applications. Laser-Optimized Multimode Fiber With increased network speeds comes a rise in the significance of fiber optic cabling and connectivity. Most data centers today have equal amounts of fiber and copper terminations, and fiber links are vital to carrying backbone traffic to and from a large number of sources. As you set out to choose a fiber type for your LAN infrastructure and data center connections, it's important to recognize that within the rank of multimode fiber are higher performance grades known as laser-optimized multimode fiber. Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet speeds in the backbone are a reality today, and so is this remarkable advanced fiber technology. Laser-optimized 50 m multimode fiber offers the following benefits over other types of fiber: Offers the most bandwidth with cost-effective 850 nm VCSELs Ensures reliable transmission through advanced technologies Thoroughly recognized and specified by standards bodies Enables easy migration to Gigabit and 10 Gigabit network speeds Ideal for use in any LAN or data center fiber connection Available in several products, grades, and cable constructions It is important to carefully examine your network and evaluate the distances and bandwidths required now and in the future. To maximize your investment, you must choose the correct type and grade of fiber to support future needs.

TracerLight Patch Cords TracerLight Power Source and Patch Cords
ADCs innovative TracerLight connector identification system offers a quick and accurate method of identifying the termination point of optical patch cords. Each end of a TracerLight patch cord features a flashing light allowing technicians to visually trace individual patch cords from one end to the other without pulling or affecting the patch cord. The TracerLight power source is easily attached to the TracerLight component on one end of the patch cord. This causes the LED on each end to begin flashing rapidly. As a result, the distant end of the patch cord can be quickly and easily identified without interruption of service or disturbance of the optical signal path. Ordering Information

Intrafacility Fiber Cable (IFC) Assemblies

Intrafacility fiber cable (IFC) is a multifiber cable designed for use within a building. The number of fibers range from 12 to 144. Standard IFC assemblies are riser rated and meet UL-1666 OFNR. Two types of IFC are available: stranded and ribbon. With stranded cable, individual 900 m fibers make up the construction of the cable. The fibers are bundled into subunits of 6- or 12-fibers each.

Introduction

Fiber Management Tray (FMT)

Data Connectivity Solutions

106620AE 3/09

Cable management is an essential consideration in any successful fiber communications network. ADCs FMT series fiber optic panel enables termination, termination/splicing, termination/ storage, splicing only and slack storage for optical fibers in a compact 1 or 2 RU panel.

Sliding Radius Limiter

Sliding radius limiters provide ultimate fiber management by addressing one of the most critical elements of fiber cable management: bend radius protection. By controlling the movement of fibers into the drawer, error-proof slack loop management is maintained, ensuring proper bend radius protection. This is crucial to protecting fiber, eliminating service failures and decreasing costs.

Sliding Adapter Pack

Sliding adapter packs allow easy access for connecting jumpers and cleaning connectors, ensuring that any fiber can be installed or removed without disturbing adjacent fibers. That means a significant reduction in connector installation/reconfiguration time.

Data Connectivity Solutions

3/09 106620AE

ADCs next generation frame (NGF) product line has fiber frames designed to fit a variety of network applications. Each frame option is designed with an emphasis on superior cable management and ease of use, including features such as ample trough space for cable and jumpers, easy access to connectors and storage for jumpers. The frame sections are shipped from the factory fully equipped with all cable management hardware including integrated jumper slack storage.

Fiber Termination Block (FTB)

ADCs FTB is available with industry-standard adapters in block configurations of 72-, 96- and 144-positions. Also, a 192-position FTB is available using LC adapters. FTBs utilize sliding adapter packs to gain easy access to both the front and rear terminations. To accommodate varying network requirements and speed installation, FTBs can be ordered with adapters only or preterminated with either intrafacility cable (IFC) or outside plant (OSP) cables.

Fiber Combination Block (FCB)

Our FCB provides termination and on-frame splicing capabilities. This configuration occupies two mounting positions on the frame section. They are available with industry-standard adapters in block configurations of 72-, 96- and 144-positions. An FCB with 192-positions is also available using LC adapters.

Fiber Optic Terminal Storage Panel

ADCs fiber optic terminal storage panel is used as a storage apparatus for up to 16 feet of equipment (FOT) jumpers at the fiber frame lineup. This panel can be installed between fiber frames and at the end of a lineup.
Note: For 192-position FTB/FCB, a 1.7 mm patch cord is required.

NGF Optical Distribution Frame

The FMDF is the cornerstone of the NGF product line. This innovative frame has six 5-inch horizontal troughs for a total of 30 inches of horizontal trough space. This abundant trough space minimizes fiber pile up and congestion leading to easier jumper traceability and removal. The frame has twelve Fiber Termination Block (FTB) mounting positions equally divided between vertical columns on the left and right sides of the frame as shown in the figure below. The frame is available in 30-inch wide version painted textured black. The 30-inch wide frame provides additional vertical trough space for the 7' highest termination density applications. The built-in jumper storage panel will store up to 3.5 meters (12feet) of jumper slack.

Adapter-Only Fiber Termination Blocks

Fiber termination blocks (FTBs) without fiber can be ordered fully loaded with adapters. Before ordering, determine the block orientation and cable exit direction. Adapter-only FTBs may be ordered with a left orientation (mounts on the left side of the frame) or a right orientation (mounts on the right side of the frame). The cable exit direction will be either upward* (cables terminated to the rear side of the block exit up toward the top of the frame) or downward (cables terminated to the rear side of the block exit down toward the bottom of the frame). All blocks with adapters only are configured to terminate single or dual jumpers on the rear of the block. If a multifiber breakout style cable (i.e., OSP/IFC) is to be terminated to the rear of the block, a separate clamping kit and replacement rear storage area kit is required1.
* When using the fiber optic terminal jumper storage panels, a cable exit UP block must be used.

Preterminated Fiber Termination Blocks with MPO Connectors

Fiber termination blocks (FTBs) with MPO connectors provide MPO connectability on the rear of the block for easy connection of MPO fiber cables. The termination portion of the fiber block utilizes sliding adapter packs to gain easy access to standard connectors and adapters on the front of the block and provides a location for standard patch cord connections. The block is internally cabled at the factory for easy installation and occupies one position of the frame. Before ordering, determine the block orientation needed as the blocks may be ordered with a left orientation (mounts on the left side of the frame) or a right orientation (mounts on the right side of the frame). Fiber Entrance Cabinet Accessories Breakout Kit for Ribbon in Loose Buffer Tube (RLBT) OSP Cable
Ribbon in loose buffer tube OSP cables are constructed as shown in Figure 1. All RLBT cables feature six subunits surrounding a central strength member. Depending on the fiber count of the cable, some of the subunits may be used as filler subunits (a solid plastic unit without any fiber). Each subunit containing fiber is comprised of six or twelve ribbons featuring 12 fibers per ribbon. Breakout kits for RLBT cables contain multiple breakout bases, each with 5-meter lengths of protective tubing (see Figure 2). The protective tubing accommodates up to six ribbons. One breakout kit fits into each individual subunit. For mass fusion ribbon splicing applications in the FEC, ADC recommends splicing up to 72 fibers (six ribbons) in a dual splice tray. The tray should be equipped with an MT splice chip (see page 53 for information on mechanical or mass fusion ribbon trays). For single fusion splicing applications, ADC recommends 24 fibers per drawer using either two single trays or one dual tray. This kit is used to protect fiber ribbons between the cable clamp and the splice tray. Breakout kits are designed for use in controlled environments only.

FiberGuide Fiber Management System The Industry's Most Comprehensive Optical Raceway System
ADC's FiberGuide fiber management systems offer the greatest breadth of optical raceway products in the industry. In response to customer requirements, ADC continues to innovate and improve FiberGuide systems, adding greater flexibility and driving down installation time to ensure a smooth deployment. FiberGuide is a raceway system designed to protect and route fiber optic patch cords, multi-fiber cable assemblies and intrafacility fiber cable (IFC) to and from fiber splice enclosures, fiber distribution frames and fiber optic terminal devices. FiberGuide ensures a two-inch minimum bend radius is maintained throughout the system. Tool-less, Snap-Fit junctions, cover options and Plenum Express Exit drops significantly reduce the amount of time required for installation. The FiberGuide system is a complete set of products designed and manufactured to ensure total offframe protection and ease of use. Basic components include horizontal and vertical straight sections, horizontal and vertical elbows, downspouts, junctions and numerous support hardware and flex-tube kits. Available in a variety of sizes: 2x2 Ideal for smaller installations or for vertical routing of a maximum of four hundred 2 mm fiber optic patch cords. All 2x2 FiberGuide products are shipped with covers. 2x6 Designed for height restricted environments, this robust system provides the same support and system flexibility of the traditional 4-inch-high system while saving 2 inches of overhead space. It features a maximum capacity of 1,200, 2 mm patch cords. 4x4 Features the maximum capacity to support 1,600, 2 mm patch cords. It has been engineered to allow straight sections to be self-supporting over a span of up to 1.83 m (6 feet). 4x6 Features the same benefits of the 4-inch system and a maximum trough capacity of 2,400, 2 mm patch cords. 4x12 The 12-inch-wide trough has a maximum capacity to support nearly 5,000, 2 mm patch cords. Perfect for runs over fiber frame lineups and perimeter routes. 4x24 The 4x24-inch system is the ultimate raceway solution to securely route and protect patch cords over high-density optical distribution frames including ADC's Data Center Optical Distribution Frame (ODF). Designed for maximum capacity, this robust system provides the same support and flexibility as the traditional 4x12-inch system while doubling capacity.

Fiber Connectivity
Plenum FiberGuide System System Description
ADCs Plenum FiberGuide System is a fiber cable raceway system that protects optical fibers, routed beneath raised computer room floors and above suspended ceilings. These physical areas, used to transport environment air, are typically categorized as plenum air spaces by National Electric Code (NEC) Standards. In general, materials used in these spaces must be non-flammable and must not emit appreciable amounts of smoke or toxic gases when exposed to heat or flame. Made from sturdy aluminum, ADCs Plenum FiberGuide System protects optical fibers by physically separating them from copper communications cable, power cable, ground cables, heating/ventilating ducts, water pipes and many other obstructions commonly encountered in plenum air spaces. New Plenum FiberGuide Express Exits allow jumpers to be permanently or temporarily routed to the fiber optic terminal (FOT) equipment or fiber frames. No cutting is required because knockout sections can be punched out as necessary. As seen in Figure 1, the Plenum FiberGuide System can be used above a dropped ceiling as well as below a raised computer floor. Figure 2 details a layout below a computer floor. This illustration shows a plenum FiberGuide System featuring new Express Exits.

Copper Connectivity
CopperTen Category 6a UTP
The CopperTen system is the worlds first UTP structured cabling system with the necessary characteristics to enable 10Gbps Ethernet transmission over a full 100 meters. Typical Category 6 cabling systems are hindered by the technical combination of insertion loss and alien crosstalk (interference from adjacent cables) at higher frequencies. Alien crosstalk greatly disrupts transmission and high-speed data communications. The CopperTen system incorporates patent-pending design and manufacturing processes that enable the products to overcome these challenges.

KM8 Category 6 Modular Jacks
KM8 modular jacks are an integral part of the TrueNet channel solution. Tuned together with other TrueNet Category 6 components and cable, KM8 jacks help deliver zero-bit-error network performance.

Data Connectivity Solutions

A KM8 modular jack with cable management system ensures reliable field termination. The cable manager holds cable pairs in place up to the termination point, preventing cable untwist and buckle, guaranteeing dependable and repeatable performance. All four pairs terminate at once without a tool for the tool-less jack, reducing termination time and effort. These modular jacks can be used in ADCs modular patch panels.

Patch Cords
These RJ45 (8P8C) plug to RJ45 plug patch cords use ADC Category 5e cable and exceed the requirements for Category 5e. Before ordering patch cords, check the transmit and receive orientation of the hub and network interface card. Some manufacturers require a crossover of transmit and receive pairs; others have either the hub port or NIC card reversed in advance. Some can switch between the two. Please contact the ADC Technical Assistance Center with questions.

Ethernet Distribution Frame
ADCs Ethernet Distribution Frame (EDF) forms a central patching location between active Ethernet network elements. By creating a centralized craft interface for adds, upgrades, and rearrangements on Ethernet equipment, the EDF enables change without service disruptions. This central patching location provides a logical and easy-to-manage infrastructure due to two design characteristics: All network elements have permanent equipment cable connections that are, once terminated, never handled again. All changes, circuit rerouting, upgrades, maintenance and other activities are accomplished using semi-permanent patch cords on the front of the EDF cross-connect bay.

Vertical Cable Manager for 7' Equipment Racks

Vertical and Horizontal Cable Management

ADC's Vertical Cable Manager mounts between standard 7' equipment racks to provide neat and orderly routing of cables and jumpers.

Data Connectivity Solutions

Each Vertical Cable Manager includes two covers, front and rear. The fingers in the channel are spaced to provide easy entrance and exit of cables while still maintaining control of the cable bend radii. For increased accessibility, the fingers break away, leaving a smooth edge for the protection of cable jackets. Mounting brackets are included.
