Our windscreen seals are manufactured to the highest standards as required by the
motor industry. The compound used is EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene monomer).
It has excellent weather resistance, good high and low temperature resistance. Also,
like original seals all joints are vulcanised (not glued like some cheaper seals). and the
corners are shaped. The rubber to plastic ratio is important in producing long-life
seals. By adding plastic you can produce a cheaper seal. These seals which are shiny
black in appearance, are sensitive to temperature change. They become soft in the
summer and hard in the winter.

1. When matching smooth vinyl to square weave tan code 26, the correct match is code 84.
2. The centre section is not available from TMI. You can purchase matching material by the yard
(991mm) x 54 (1372mm) to re-cover your existing panel.

1. A few camper van conversions use a clip in style of passenger seat. The appropriate TMI cover
can be used, but will require minor modification at the rear.
2. Vans & buss 1974 76 can have either of two seat styles.
Check the style of the seat back - its sides & upper corners. One has a much more modern appearance. Please ask your sales person for advice.

Extruded Cord
The piping or welt on seats & door panels can be made in one of two ways - extruded or
wrapped. TMIs extruded method produces piping made of a solid colour that is 23 times
thicker than a vinyl wrapped cord. No matter how much wear you give extruded
piping, it will never show the cord or white string the way that wrapped cord will.

stitching is failing, rotting or stretching then it will need replacing. TMI use an anti-microbial

seat belts
All our seat belts are manufactured in the UK & they meet all current UK MOT requirements. Our
aircraft style, pull up to release, chrome buckle belts are specified to BSI (BS) standards.
Our modern style, push in buckle belts are specified to European (E) standards.
Both styles are equally safe, but vehicles manufactured after December 1971 can only fit push in
buckle, E standard belts at the front due to current legislation.
From 1966 all vehicles should be fitted with three point belts in the front, with the exception of a
centre bench seat.
The all webbing belts come with a length adjustment at the anchor plate attached to the female
buckle. This adjustment is made on installation only.
The length must set so that the buckle must be positioned beside the hip.
All belts are available in the full range of colours although some styles & colour combinations are
only be supplied to order.
Please Note: Vehicles imported from the USA may have seat belts that
whilst safe, may fail an MOT test in the UK.

38amp dynamos were also originally used in conjunction with a special top pulley which is
also now NLA. It had a different offset than Beetle pulleys or a Bus alternator pulley.
If you have problems with the vertical alignment of your pulleys use our AC1051915 shim kit
to bring out the bottom pulley but check its not a tinware/backing plate issue first.
The 38 amp regulator for this Dynamo is now NLA too so if you still have a Dynamo & need
to change it or the regulator please upgrade to an alternator using the kit below.

These have an internal regulator like the original 8/74> models.
You should also use this type for >7/74 Buses with external regulators & modify
your wiring. Both our high quality alternators are new units sold outright.

A new addition to the Pertronix range is its new Volkswagen air cooled engine billet
distributor. CNC machined from 6061 T-6 alloy aluminium billet & polished to a high lustre,
its the must have for all air cooled engine owners!
Fitted with either the standard Ignitor I or the high performance Ignitor 2, it comes with a
fully adjustable advance curve which can be tailored to suit exact requirements. The black
distributor cap is fitted with HEI style terminals for positive location of the spark plug wires.
A terminal & boot kit is included with the distributor to convert your existing leads & aid

The Ignitor II is an improved & updated electronic ignition with all the features of the Ignitor I
plus a powerful micro controller which senses current levels in the coil & adjusts the dwell to
maintain peak energy throughout the rev range resulting in the following features & benefits:
Four times more available energy between 3000 & 5000-rpm when compared with points
ignition plus twice the voltage.
Three times more available energy between 3000 & 5000-rpm when compared with
Ignitor I ignition plus nearly twice the voltage.
High rpm performance is much better if used with the Flamethrower II coil.

Shuts down automatically if the ignition is left on for an extended period if the engine is not

Low resistance high performance spark plug leads with twin current paths to provide
maximum fire power to the spark plugs when using uprated coils such as the Flamethrower
range. The centre core is carbon impregnated fibreglass, spiral wound with stainless steel
alloy inside EPDM insulation. The 7mm leads sets are standard length ready to fit leads with
standard seals & Bakerlite spark plug ends. The 8mm diameter leads are supplied over long,
have aftermarket spark plug connectors & are not finished at the distributor cap end. This
allows alternative routing to be used & they may also fitted to many other 4 cylinder vehicles.
All parts required to finish the ends of the 8mm leads are included. Both types fit all Buses

Oil is the lifeblood of your engine using good quality oil will give your engine the best
chance for a long & healthy life. However, not all oils are the same, not all high quality oils
are right for our beloved air-cooled unit, & there is a lot of myth regarding which is the
correct type to use. So wed like to try & set the record straight.

Mono-grade vs. Multi-grade

In the early days VW originally specified straight mono-grade oil for the Beetle engine.
Remember, this was a long time ago, & most manufacturers specified mono-grade oils
because multi-grade oils were in their infancy, & frankly they werent that good. The
grade of oil was specified as straight SAE 30 for most general driving conditions, with
SAE 20 specified for winter or colder climates, & SAE 40 specified for high summer or
warmer climates.
The introduction of new oil standards in the 1970s brought the advent of better quality
multi-grade oils, with the result that in 1975 VW specified multi-grade oils for all new
air-cooled vehicles, & recommended that older vehicles also follow the new specifications.
The recommendation was for oils of SAE15W-40 or SAE20W-50 or similar for European
climates. All air-cooled engines since this time, up to the latest Brazilian/Mexican engines, specify a multi-grade oil.

We therefore follow VW specifications & recommend a good quality multi-grade mineral

oil such as the Quantum SAE15W-40, or similar quality brand. There are those who claim
that multi-grade oil breaks down at the high oil temperatures that the air-cooled unit runs
at. We disagree if your engine is operating at temperatures that break down the oil, then
your engine is running far too hot! You need to reduce the oil temperature, not use lower
specification oil. For the traditionalist who prefers to stay with SAE 30, we stock the high
quality Morris brand, one of the best mono-grades about.
Mineral Oil vs. Synthetic Oil
Synthetic oils typically have quite different heat transfer characteristics to mineral oils.
On modern water-cooled units this is not a problem, but on the air-cooled unit where
a significant part of the overall engine cooling comes through oil cooling, the use of
synthetic oils can cause problems. As the amount of heat dissipated by the oil is reduced,
the engine runs hotter. Therefore, for every day use, we recommend mineral oils, not
synthetics (2.5 litres required for a 1200cc-1600cc engine).
