An experiment on osmosis was carried out by immersing potato strips in five solutions of different
concentrations. Five potato strips of the same size were weighed. Each was immersed in distilled water
and sucrose solutions of 0.2 M, 0.4 M, 0.6 M and 0.8 M. They were left for 30 minutes and then
weighed. Figure 1 (a) shows the experimental set up, while Figure 1 (b) shows the initial mass of each
potato strip. Table 1 shows the results of the experiment.

FIGURE 2

The Department of Environment (DOE) has received complaints from the residents of a housing
area concerning the activities of an oil palm factory which is believed to have contaminated a
nearby river. Based on the above situation, as a representative of the DOE, you are required to plan
a laboratory experiment to study the degreel of water pollution at three different locations along the
river, as in Figure 2.

The planning of the experiment should cover the following aspects:

• Objective of study
• Variables
• Statement of hypothesis
• List of apparatus and materials
• Technique used
• Experimental procedure
• Presentation of results
• Conclusion
