PART 3 3.1

EXECUTION

PREPARATIONS AND APPLICATION A Concrete to receive waterproofing treatments must have a clean surface and should be treated with concrete neutralizer to ensure proper chemical penetration, maximum bonding and an open capillary system. Surface to be waterproofed should be examined for structural defects, and unacceptable conditions should be reported. Remove all protrusions. Chiseling out any honeycombed or damaged areas. Clean all chiseled out areas, form-tie holes etc. and prewater until the concrete is saturated. Prior to applying waterproofing, rinse carefully all the surfaces to be waterproofed and prewater with clean water. Prewater several times so that the concrete is thoroughly saturated. When waterproofing is applied, the surface should be damp but not wet. Any surface water on horizontal surface must be removed. Moisture must be present in the concrete strata to achieve maximum initial penetration of the activated chemicals. Surfaces shall be moist only (not wet) when coatings are applied. Apply the first coat of capillary waterproofing (at the rate as recommended by the manufacturer). After the first coat, apply final coatings (at the rate as recommended by manufacturer) within 45 to 55 minutes for all unexposed and areas below grade and let it dry prior as curing. For all exposed areas, final coatings of capillary waterproofing shall be applied immediately.

CURING AND PROTECTION A Capillary waterproofing products are cement-based and will cure and harden in the same way as ordinary concrete. Setting and hardening will depend on the surrounding temperature and humidity.

B For maximum efficiency from capillary waterproofing treatment, it is essential that the layers are kept damp for at least 5 days and protected against evaporation by sun and wind. Careful post-watering should be carried out at intervals, starting the day following application. Alternatively, the surfaces can be covered with plastic sheeting, wet mats or moist sand. The use of curing membranes is not recommended. The freshly treated surfaces should be protected from rain for a minimum period of 24 hrs. In enclosed spaces and deep pits, air circulation should be provided for 24 hrs. following treatment. Filling of water including structures can take place after 14 days: however, if earlier filling is required for some reason careful filling after at least 7 days is possible after checking integrity of surface.

3.2

COATING A All surfaces treated, which are to be coated or painted, must be left to cure for at least 4 weeks. At the end of the curing period, the surfaces should be saturated with water and neutralized with 1:8 solution of muriatic acid. Following this the areas must be thoroughly rinsed with water.
