PFHL Course 240-- Leadership to Churches for Revival (13 pgs.)

(by Bill Stevenson)

Directions: Read carefully and answer the questions. This assignment is worth 3 units.

Introduction:
Does your church need revival? Or if you do not have a church presently, do you want to begin
one in a very easy and interesting way? This course has important Biblical, practical, and a little
legal information for either situation. I have experienced over 30 different denominational and
non-denominational churches and about 7 different home groups. The main conclusion I have
come to is that a home church (Philemon 2) or a building church should have as the main
purposes what is stated in the following Bible passages-- Ephesians 4:11-16, Colossians 3:12-17,
Hebrews 10:24-25, and Titus 2:1-8. But before getting to those, let us take a special survey of
the Bible to see what are the Biblical key ingredients for church leadership and church ministries,
even for home groups. Remember that “all Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is
profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction for instruction in righteousness: that the man of
God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:16-17) and “in
God is no variableness, neither shadow of turning” (James 1:17b). In order to improve anything,
we must be willing to change and it is much better to change to what the Bible advises than to
what a “how to” book says. Remember that God will not ask or command us to do any change
we could not do without His help. Leonard Ravenhill wrote in his book for preacher revival,
Sodom Had No Bible: “Brethren! When we get humble enough, and low enough, and desperate
enough, and hungry enough, and concerned enough, and passionate enough, and broken enough,
and clean enough, and prayerful enough, then God will send us a revival that equals and
surpasses the awakening this country experienced in the days of Charles Finney.” So be
prayerfully open-minded as you read these Bible verses and answer the questions on other paper.
(The point values for each answer are in parentheses.)
Special Bible Survey:
1. What is the common duty of ministers in Exodus 28:4, 29:1,29:44, 30:22, 30:30, 40:13, &
40:15, Leviticus 7:35, Deuteronomy 10:8, 21:5, 1 Chronicles 15:2, 16:4, & 29:11, and
Ezekiel 44:15-16? What is the important preposition in those verses before the object of
that duty? What main Christian character trait does that word indicate? Read also Acts
13:1-2. How can a minister do this duty today? Give as many specific examples as
possible? (1/1/1/3)
2. Like Jesus Christ, what should a present day Christian leader definitely be? Read Matthew
4:1-14 to find the three part answer. (3)
3. Match the following Bible verses with the stated or indicated qualities and duties that a
minister should have. First copy each Bible verse on your paper. Following each, write the
appropriate answer or answers from the second column. Some of the verses will have more
than one answer, indicated by the number in parentheses, and some of the minister quality
and duty answers will be used for more than one Bible verse.

4. How should a pastor or home group leader be saved to eternal life and thankful to God in
much praise? (Be specific in answering.)
Read Acts 11:19-24. What was the pastor/teacher type of Christian leader Barnabas glad
about? What were three key other qualities he had? (3/2/3)
5. How should Psalms 90: 14-17 apply to Christian leadership? Proverbs 3:6, Philippians 4:4-8,
and Hebrews 12:5b-15 may help you answer. (4)
6. How is an independent minister or even a leader of a home group specially chosen and
specially appointed? Read also Ephesians 1:3-14, John 15: 16 & 19, and Acts 13: 1-4 &
20:28-32.
Is this divine calling permanent? Read Romans 11:29 and reread Exodus 40:15,
Deuteronomy 18:5, and 1 Chronicles 15:2. (3/1)
7. What does it mean to be consecrated, sanctified, and anointed for ministry today? There are
two appropriate definitions. Check a good dictionary. What should a Christian leader be
consecrated to? What does this mean in relation to a pastor’s or a home group leader’s
behavior when not ministering? (2/1/2)
8. How should a pastor or home group leader be spiritually cleansed, prepared before and
properly dressed for ministry? Look at 1 John 1:9, 2 Timothy 2:15 & 3:16-17, and Romans
14:13b & 19 (3)
9. Read Colossians 4:12, 2 Thessalonians 1:11 8 &12, Hebrews 6:10, James 5: 14-16, and
reread 1 Samuel 12:23. How should a Christian leader be an encourager by blessing others
and a prayer warrior for others? Give some specific examples in two or three areas of
ministry. (4)
10. How should a Christian leader be a controversy judge? Read Deuteronomy 17:8-12 and 1
Corinthians 6:1-5. Give some specific examples in two or three areas of ministry. 4(3)

2
11. Read 1 Timothy 3:8-13 and Titus 1:5-14. Here questions which indicate the New Testament
requirements for church leaders: Are you usually reverent in living as a channel of God’s
love and compassion? Are you a lover of hospitality and a lover of good people? Are you
truthful and consistent in oral sharing, not double-tongued? Are you not greedy for money
and are you a cheerful giver? Are you being found blameless, free from condemnation or
Biblical judgment? Are you morally single or are you married to a reverent, non slanderer,
temperate, faithful-in all-things spouse, who has a consecrated love for God and you, who is
truth-speaking and self-controlled in actions, and who is trustworthy and loyal to you? Are
you completely devoted to your spouse and loving her or him as Christ loves the church?
Are you guiding your children and spouse well in Spiritual growth in love, prayer, Bible
study and especially by being a Christ-like example, not provoking any family member to
wrath or bitterness? Have other church members given you much respect? Has your
Christian faith been much proved, having had a good number of testing experiences of your
Christianity? Have you obtained great boldness in the Christian faith, in teaching the Bible,
in intercessorary praying, ministering, and witnessing? Are you holding the mystery of the
faith with a pure conscience not watering-down or compromising Bible doctrine? Do you
rebuke those that are scoffers, unruly, vain talkers, deceivers, and teachers of wrong things?
What does 1 Timothy 5:17 mean to you? (14/3)
12, Exodus 4:12 &15 were divine instructions to the Egypt-educated Moses. Who was this great
servant and leader of God to submit to for more education? What was he to learn? Also read
Psalms 119:12, 26, 33, 64, 66, 68, 108, 124, & 135 which were also penned by a God-chosen
leader. Should every pastor be likewise submissive to God and apply Proverbs 3:5 & 6? See
also Isaiah 56:11. What does this mean to you? Give specific examples. (1/2/1/3)
13. How do Psalms 1 and 25 describe the attitude and consecration of a Christian leader? (5)
14. How do Isaiah 28:9-13, Proverbs 3:5, John 16:12-15, and Hebrews 5:11-6:2 apply to
Christian leaders always having a desire to learn more of God’s wisdom? Where did the
doctrine of Jesus Christ and the Apostle Paul come from? Read John 7:14-18 and 1
Corinthians 2. So what are the best ways to prepare to preach and teach spiritually?
spending much time in ................................. (3/1/2)
15. How can Exodus 18:20, Deuteronomy 5:31 & 32:2, 1 Samuel 12:23, Ezra 7:10 & 25, Ezekiel
44:23, and Matthew 5:17-48 be applicable to two other very important responsibilities of
New Testament Christian leaders? Read also 1 Thessalonians 4:7, Galatians 3-5, Romans 6,
1 Timothy 4, James 2:26-3:1, and 1 John. 1, 2, & 5:1-3. (5)
16. According to Deuteronomy 4:10 & 6:1-9, Proverbs 4:1-4, 1 Corinthians 4:15, and Ephesians
6:4 does the pastor or Sunday School have the actua1 responsibility to teach the children?
Who does? (2)
17. According to Deuteronomy 32:1-4, 2 Kings 17:27, Psalms 86:5, 8-10, & 15, and Matthew
22:35-40, what other kind of doctrine should a Christian leader emphasize? about the
............................. of God (10 divine attributes)
Why? Shouldn’t every true Christian leader want these characteristics to be prominent in his
or her life? Read 2 Timothy 2:24-26. What else should be emph8sized in Christian leader
preaching and teaching? Read Acts 5:40-42 and Philippians 3:8-10, and 2 Corinthians 4:5 &
6.
What kind of: presentation of this doctrine should be done and for what compassionate
purposes for those being taught? Read Mark 6:34, Acts 20:28-32, Ephesians 4:11-16,
Colossians 1:28-29, 1 Timothy 4 & 6:20-21, and reread Deuteronomy 32:2. Look up the
word “distil” and think about what the rain and dew do. (10/3/1/1/3)
18. Read Luke 4:23, 9:2 & 60, and Romans 14:17. How does “preaching the Kingdom of God”
relate to the last answers? (3)

3
19. What do Matthew 4:17 & 5:19 mean to you? (5)
20. Read Matthew 18. What should a Christian home group or building church be a place for?
(6)
21. What do Matthew 21:13, Isaiah 56:7, Acts 2:42 & 12:5 indicate another important activity
which should be emphasized in a Christian home group or building church? What are the
usual problems which stop this from being true in most churches? How would you change
church time usage without “turning over tables find forcing people out”? How can you be
like Jesus Christ as indicated in Luke 11:1? (1/3/3/3)
22. Every Christian, especially those chosen for leadership, should be heeding to God’s guidance
for him or her to be morel like Jesus Christ. Thus each true Christian should want to live the
commission that Jesus said was prophesied by Isaiah. See Luke 4:18 & 19. What do these
verses mean for today; what kind of ministries do they indicate? (5)
23. What sermon or teaching topics does 1 Timothy 6 indicate and why are they important for
churches and home groups today? Read also 2 Timothy 4:1-5 and Titus 1:1 & 6-15. (5)

Church Purpose Bible Study:

24. Read carefully Ephesians 4: 11-16. In Verse 12, the Greek word translated” perfecting”
means “preparing fully”. But many Christians (especially new ones) need to be “repaired”
from past spiritual “damage” before they are “prepared” for any Christian leadership. So
many new Christians are asked to witness and teach before they have been “repaired” and
told more about the divine attributes of the Godhead and how Jesus Christ ministered on
Earth. I believe that every new or immature Christian should be assigned a spiritual” buddy”
(for lack of a better word) who has been taught the just mentioned basics. This “buddy”
would meet with the “young” Christian at least once a week and would be available for
prayer and Bible study for question answering at any time. This type of “networking” would
take a lot of the teaching and counseling responsibility from the busy pastors, church elders,
and Sunday school teachers. The three “for”s in verse 12 are not from the same Greek word.
This means to me that the three phrases should be considered to be in chronological order
like a regular cycle of ministry. If a Christian is being taught the Word of God for life
application, then he or she will get desires to minister to certain people in established or new
ministries, and because of that the church will be edified and encouraged!! Most churches
instead emphasize just the church ministries or social activities that will edify or “attract
more people to visit. Where in Scripture does it say that a pastor or elder is to be leader of all
church committees (most of which have no Bible support for existence) and leader in all
individual and church ministries? Why were Stephen and six other full-of-the-Holy-Spirit
men chosen by the Apostles? See Acts 6:1-4. Remember that not even Sunday morning
evangelistic sermons and Sunday School are mentioned or indicated in the Bible and that the
Apostle Paul had good, applicable-to-today, reasons about warning against man’s religious
traditions. Who should be doing most of .the church visitation and witnessing, and where?
With the above information and what Ephesians 4:11-16, write an essay about the main
responsibility of a pastor and how it should be done in a church and why. (25)
25. Read carefully Hebrews 10:24-25, Ephesians 2:10, and Colossians 3:12-17. Write an essay
about what should be the main purposes and uses of every type of Christian home group
and church meeting or fellowship. How can each type of meeting be used for the indicated
ministries in the Bible verses? Be specific. Which common church activities should not be
done anymore? (25)

5
26. Read carefully Titus 2:1-8. Write an essay about why and how the indicated ministries
should be applied in a church or home group. (25)

Helps for the Revival of Existing Churches und Home Groups:

Note: The following are only suggestions that I thought of after experiencing many different
kinds of churches, home groups, and ministries. Many people would rather just say what
they think is wrong about organizations (especially church, sport teams, and government)
and very few present possible alterations or changes. Skip over the ones you don’t agree
with or care for, considering all. Again, one of the main hindrances of church revival is
that we are comfortable with the way things are and are skeptical about anything “new”
(even when some of the “new” changes were done almost 2,000 years ago). Be “open-
minded” and try to determine the reason why each suggestion has been made.
A. How to change a church to “a house of prayer” and a source of Holy Spirit-led
encouragement.
1. Emphasize preaching/teaching for a month on how to live Proverbs 3:5-6 and
Galatians 5 praying and living expecting Romans 8:28-29 “evidence”. To encourage
church attendees to get sincerely concerned about others, it might be good to have
some films and field trips to see the results of going against God’s instructions and see
ministry needs.
2. Have a prayer sign-up list on a very evident bulletin board. At the top of this list
across the top would be the last names of the church leaders. There would be at least
seven lines below each name on which church members would sign their names to
indicate to the leaders that they would be specifically praying for them each day.. The
daily prayers should be emphasizing the leaders having quality time for Bible study,
prayer, family, counseling/discipling, and decision-making. Specific requests of the
leaders can be made on a prayer needs list made available for anyone concerned.
3. Encourage church members to encourage the church leaders by sending them postcard
notes and gifts.
4. Have a prayer sign-up list for church members to indicate families they will be daily
praying for. The church leaders should meet together to discuss possible suggested
prayer and fellowship assignments for the church families based on what they know of
individuals’ backgrounds. Empathy encourages sincere prayer and fellowship more
than sympathy does. The leaders’ suggestions would be made known privately. Each
church family should have at least three individuals praying for them daily. Titus 2:1-
5 indicates that it would be good if each husband and each wife found or were
assigned a Proverbs 17:17 & 27:17 friend of the same self who is more spiritually
mature. These partnerships for spiritual growth and stronger marriages would meet at
least once a week for private prayer and discussion. The husband or wife ‘should be
able, to contact his or her spiritual partner at any time in case of an emergency or
spiritual need.
5. Each single adult, teenager, and young child should have another individual promising
to pray daily for him or her. Such assignments could be volunteered for and/or
suggested by church leadership (as indicated in #4).
6. Encourage church members to send encouraging postcards and letters and give gifts at
any time (not just when there are known needs) to families of the church. See
Galatians 6:10. When any leader of the church becomes aware of a serious family
unity problem, he or she should get as many prayer partners as possible for the
situation and help the family directly as God leads. (The help may be just encouraging
someone else to go and visit.) The situation should be treated like a “red alert” status

6
is treated in the military, top priority. Divorce is usually horrible.
7. Sermons from the pulpit should be mostly Bible expounding, not theology, philosophy,
psychology, humor, interesting stories. Sunday school lessons and home group
fellowship discussions should be the same, Bible expounding. God’s Word will not
return void and has the solutions for all of our problems in this world.
8. For each song or hymn that has words for spiritual commitment of some sort, a few
minutes of silence before singing should be done to enable individuals time to decide
whether they should sing those words of commitment or just listen.
9. Church leaders should encourage and help promote new ministries, especially those
thought of after much prayer.
Question #27-- What were your responses to these nine ideas? Which ones have you tried
already? Which ones do want to try as soon as possible? [10]
B. How to encourage church revival.
1. Have a special wedding vow renewal ceremony with appropriate music and reading of
Ephesians 5:18b-6:4 for all couples of the church. Also rededication of children to
God could be done. Commitment by the children for honoring and obeying parents
could be done too. Special certificates of the three types of crucial commitments
should be given for placement in the main family room of each home. A nice
reception should be done for after this family-commitment church ceremony.
2. Have a special Sunday prayer service with the following requests:
(a) “Any who do not want to stay past normal dismissal time, please leave now. Any
children who do not want to stay, please take them now to the professional child
care workers who have been hired for this special time for spiritual church
revival.”
(b) “Those precious prayer warriors of this church come forward to the area on my
right (your left). If any of you have any thoughts against anyone, confess and
eliminate those. Apologize right now to anyone here you have been offended by.
Then I want you to begin a season of intense prayer for what needs to be done for
revival to occur here today. Intercede for others you know here. Pray for much
confession and decisions for changes of habits. Please pray quietly until I have
finished with the other requests. Feel free to pray sitting, standing, or lying face
down in this area.”
(c) “All of the rest of you who know you are true Christians pray with your eyes and
ears open for me and the receivers of my requests.”
(d) “Now I am speaking to the pastors, elders, and deacons of this church. Please
come to the area to my left (your right). I will read a list from 1 Timothy 3:8-13
and if any question I am about to say would have to truthfully be answered “no”,
please go sit down and consider resigning your post later. (Read slowly with a
minute pause between each question.) Here are the questions based on Scriptural
requirements for church leaders:
Are you usually reverent in living as a channel of God’s love and compassion?
Are you not double-tongued, being truthful and consistent in oral sharing?
Are you not greedy for money and are you a cheerful giver?
Are you holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience not watering
down or compromising Bible doctrine?
Has your Christian faith been much proved by having had a good number of
testing experiences of your Christianity?
Are you being found blameless, free from condemnation of Biblical judgment?

7
Are you morally single or are you married to a reverent, non-slanderous,
temperate, faithful-in-all things wife, who has a consecrated love for God and
you, who is truth-speaking and self-controlled in actions and who is
trustworthy and loyal to you?
Are you completely devoted to your wife and loving her as Christ loves the
church?
Are you guiding, especially by being a Christ-like example, your children and
wife well in Spiritual growth in love, prayer, and Bible study, not provoking
any of them to wrath or bitterness?
Have you been given much respect by other church members?
Have you obtained great boldness in the Christian faith, in teaching the Bible, in
intercessorary praying, in ministering, and in witnessing?”
(e) “I want you leaders to now do the same as I asked the prayer warriors to do. If
any of you have any thoughts against anyone, confess and eliminate those.
Apologize right now to anyone here you have been offended by. Then I want you
to begin a season of intense prayer for what needs to be done for revival to occur
here today. Intercede for others you know here who especially need revival. Pray
for much confession and decisions for changes of habits. Please pray quietly until
I have finished with the other requests. Feel free to pray sitting, standing, or lying
face down in this area. If you want your spouse or / and any of your children to
join you in prayer, ask them to come to join you now.”
(f) “Please turn to your Bibles now to Isaiah 6 and read to yourself imagining Isaiah’s
vision as much as you can as I read starting with verse one. ‘In the year that king
Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and His
train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings;
with two he covered his face and with two he covered his feet and with two he did
fly; and one cried unto another, and said: Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts:
the whole Earth is full of His glory. And the posts of the door moved at the voice
of him who cried, and the house was filled with smoke. Then said I, ‘Woe is me!
for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a
people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.’
Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he
had taken with the tongs from off the altar: and he laid it upon my mouth, and
said, ‘Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin
purged.’ Now turn to Romans 7 and try to understand the Apostle Paul’s
confession as your own as I read starting with verse twenty-one. ‘ I find then a
law, that when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the Law
of God after the inward man: but I see another law in my members, warring
against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which
is in my members. Oh wretched man that I am Who shall deliver me from the
body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the
mind I myself serve the Law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.’ Now turn
to Revelation 1 and try to imagine the vision of God given to the Apostle John as I
read starting with verse twelve. ‘And I turned to see the voice that spake with me.
And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; and in the midst of the seven
candlesticks one like unto the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the
feet, and girded about the chest with a golden band. His head and His hairs were
white like wool, as white as snow; and His eyes were as a flame of fire; and His
feet, like unto fine brass, as if refined in a furnace; and His voice as the sound of

8
many waters. And He had in His right hand seven stars: and out of His mouth
went a sharp two-edged sword: and His countenance was as the sun shineth in its
strength. And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead, and He laid His right
hand upon me, saying unto to me, ‘Fear not: I am the first and the last: I am He
that liveth, and was dead; and behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have
the keys of Hell and of death.’”
(g) “Now the important three-part question is, do you (1) want to see God like Isaiah,
Paul, and John did, (2) be so humbled as they were, and (3) respond as they did in
living totally for God and others? One last opportunity for those who do not want
to stay and do serious, life-changing business with God, please leave now.”
(h) “Let us all seek God’s will for changes. Let us have a season of prayer, which
may go on all day and night. If you feel like singing or speaking, make very sure
it is of God only. The great Christian revivals were not known for the sermons
and the singing that occurred in them. Testimonies will come naturally from
decision making with God in prayer. Pray in any positi9n and in any way that
won’t disturb those next to you. Think of Jacob’s all night physical and spiritual
wrestling match and meeting God face to face. Use your Bible and a church
hymnal too as the Holy Spirit directs for words of guidance. If you have to
apologize to someone, do it as discreetly as possible, or if that person is not here,
go and return as soon as you can, bringing that person if possible. Let us each go
into the Holy of Holies and spend hours in there.” A pastor (even from another
church) should be available in the church office or a nearby room to help counsel
for any needed apologizing help; many don’t know how to say an apology or
confession to especially a love one.
(i) Hours (or day) after the above requests are made, directed intercessory prayer
should be done for leaders and the owners of places of sin (bars, stores selling
pornography, hospitals and clinics doing abortions, theatres, etc.). Holy Spirit
urged actions to encourage policy changes should also be prayed for and done.
3. Have at least one church worship or home group meeting time every week completely
led by the Holy Spirit. A confession, commitment repentance-promise time, and
Lord’s Supper time should be included.

Question #28-- What were your reactions to all of these ideas for encouraging church revival?
[10]
C. How to encourage church members about outreach ministries.
1. Encourage the reading of information reports, talking of specially planned field trips,
and attending information films all about real world degradation. People need to see
reasons for using time to witness and help others instead of selfish activities (like
television watching). Romans 1:18-32 should be enough reason, but many don't
know that passage or don’t believe it of a "loving" God.

"What About Caesar?"

30. Matthew 22:17-21 "'Tell us [the deceitful Pharisees] therefore, what do You think? Is it
lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?' But Jesus perceived their wickedness and said, 'Why
do you test Me, you hypocrites? Show Me the tax money.' So they brought Him a
denarius. And He said to them, 'Whose image and inscription is this?' They said to Him,
'Caesar's.' And He said to them, 'Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's and
to God the things that are God's.'"
What does the word "render" mean? What does this Scripture passage now mean to you?
Especially be specific about that last render commandment. What are the things of
government that church people possess and can give? What are the things of God which
church people possess and can give? [1/7]
31. Romans 13: 1-7 "Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For :there is no
authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore
whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring
judgment on themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you
want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the
same. For he is God's minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does
not bear the sword in vain; for he is God's minister, an avenger' to execute wrath on him
who practices evil. Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for
conscience's sake. For because of this, you also pay taxes for they are God's ministers
attending continually to this very thing. Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom
taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor."
Read Acts 4:1-21. When can and how does a Christian leader disobey a command or law
of government? Otherwise how is he or she supposed to think about, speak or preach
about, and relate to any aspect of secular government? [3/3]
32. 1 Timothy 2:1-4 "Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions,
and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we
may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all Godliness and reverence. For this is good and
acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, Who desires all men to be saved and to come to
the knowledge of the truth."

12
What does this mean to you for responsibility of Christian leaders and churches and home
groups? [5]

13
33. from John Drane's book Early Christians: "It is hardly surprising that in this situation no
one gave much thought to the organization of the infant church.. Those followers of Jesus
were not concerned with appointing leaders or writing a constitution or setting up
committees. Nor did it occur to them to establish an army of bureaucrats to direct their
worldwide mission from home central headquarters. They already had the only organizing
force they needed:' the guidance' of the Holy Spirit Himself. The Spirit told them what to
say in their preaching, and gave them the boldness to say it. When Ananias and Sapphira
tried to deceive the church, Peter had no doubt that this was a direct challenge not to
himself; but to the Holy Spirit. For the church did not belong to the Apostles. It had come
into being with the arrival of the Holy Spirit, and the ultimate responsibility of its members
was not to each other, but to God. We find the same emphasis throughout the later chapters
of Acts. When the church at Antioch in Syria sent Paul and Barnabas off as missionaries, it
was acting on the instructions of the Holy Spirit, Who spoke directly to the congregation
through certain Spirit-filled individuals within it. And this sense of dependence on the
Spirit's guidance is perhaps the main characteristic of Paul's work, both in the stories of
Acts and in his own writings. This emphasis is so strong in Acts that some readers of the
New Testament have preferred to regard it not so much as the 'Acts of the Apostles', but
rather 'The Acts of the Holy Spirit'."
What is the usual way of starting a formal or legal church now days? Could this be a main
reason for the many church problems (especially the religious routines)? [3/1]
