Chair's Column:

The Executive Committee sets goals for the Section each year and adopts them at the August meeting. We post the complete goals on www.ieeechicago.org in the members area of the website, but the highlights are worth mentioning since the focus is on the membership. If you would like to volunteer for one of the activities, or start a new activity, visit the contact page of the website to find the committee chairs.

The Section will once again sponsor a conference and a committee is already formed to work out the details including the date, theme, venue, technical papers, exhibits and more. Watch for this in 2014 and mark your calendar. Past conferences have had positive reviews.

The Section also remains committed to strengthening our society chapters, subsections and affinity groups such as Women in Engineering and is developing details around how to involve these groups in the overall section activities. PACE, Professional Activities Committee for Engineers, is working with the Consultants Network to host a workshop and our new PACE chair is reviewing options for an Entrepreneurs meeting or workshop. The website currently links to 17 of these entities within our section.

IEEE Chicago
Membership is on the priority list and we are developing ways to further engage students based on some of our past success in that area. We also know we have numerous members that deserve to be elevated to Senior Member and look forward to creating programs to help find the necessary references for those members that need a little help to get started in the process toward Senior Member. The section also provides opportunities for member recognition through our awards program with details in the member's area of the website.

Industry relations are still a goal with job listings and postings on the Section website and making various trade shows available to our members at reduced cost. Finally, like most volunteer led organizations, we always have opportunities for you to participate actively in IEEE. The Section is currently in need of committee members and I'm sure the 17 Society Chapters, Affinity groups and Subsections listed on the website would also welcome your participation. Perhaps your goal could be, "to do more with IEEE."

Review the section calendar each month, read your emails from the section, follow the LinkedIn page and meet your colleagues at an IEEE activity. Chicago Fund Appeal In 2009, the IEEE-Chicago Section Fund was established to address major technological, educational, historical, and peer recognition concerns of the Chicago Section. This 501 c3 tax deductible fund is administered by the IEEE Foundation as a restricted fund for the sole use of the IEEE-Chicago Section.

IEEE-Chicago Section Funds are intended for:

Expanding outreach to pre-university students by providing prepared experiments, displays, and workbooks for teachers and volunteers to use at schools, clubs, etc. to demonstrate to students what an engineer does and how math and science skills are used to benefit humanity. Providing displays, materials, and support for Engineering Week activities. Researching and preserving the history of Chicago Electrical Engineering and drawing public attention to the accomplishments of Chicago area technology pioneers. Providing career awareness materials geared toward middle school age students to explain what an engineer does and how math and science are used to benefit humanity. Supporting local Math and Science competitions and engineering related summer programs. Supporting Chicago Section Student Branch engineering competitions geared to showcase the talents of students. Supporting IEEE Student Branch mentoring focused on "getting started in the workplace."

Currently, there are two projects funded by the IEEE-Chicago Section Fund, Science Kits for Public Libraries (SKPL) and IEEE Milestones.

Science Kits for Public Libraries: Chicago Fund Grant supports "Mad Scientists" An example of the impact the Fund is having is well illustrated in the videoprovided with the permission of the Mt. Prospect Public Library. In the video, some of the kits are shown being used by Middle school children at a "Mad Scientists" club that was offered in an after school program at the library. Enjoy the video and let us know if you think of other projects that the Chicago Fund could support for the benefit of your community.

IEEE Milestone: World's First Reliable High Voltage Power Fuse, 1909 Presentation of the IEEE Milestone in Electrical Engineering and Computing, awarded to S&C Electric Companyfortheir invention of the first reliable high-voltage power fuse in 1909. Industrial Communications - Chicago/Rockford On July 29th, members of the Illinois Institute of Electric and Electronics Engineers Chicago/Rockford Consultants Network gathered at the Palatine Public Library. The topic of discussion was, "Industrial Communication; Getting Things Talking." Ben Miller, Chair of the Chicago/Rockford Consultants Network discussed various options for communication between industrial controllers, operator panels, and sensors on the factory floor.

Mr. Miller is President of B. Miller Engineering. He specializes in industrial control and power systems, automation, and forensic investigation. He is a Senior Member of IEEE USA. Mr. Miller clarified that he was not talking about communication between your router, personal computer and cell phone. Industrial Communication references the discussion between machines, typically on a factory floor with tons of machinery, heavy motor loads and wiring where disregard for crossed signals can be catastrophic to productivity, safety and operational continuity.

Ben outlined the types of devices and systems he was referencing, including: PLC's, HMI's BAS, SCADA and Remote Access When connecting these systems, there are often multiple protocols to follow. Certain hardware was referenced specifically, including RS232, the RS485 and the RS422. All of these devices follow different protocols, some of which include: Field Bus Protocols include Modbus, Profibus, Devicenet, CAN, EtherCAT, SafetyBus and Interbus. Mr. Miller continued through actual examples of implementing certain devices, systems, and protocols while sharing highlights of his work and problems he faced in implementing Industrial Communication solutions. Mr. Miller shared a demonstration using sample hardware and Red Lionacting as a main controller. Mr. Miller mirrored the control panel on his personal computer to provide a real time demonstration. Mark your calendar for the next Consultant's Network meeting on September 30th. Members of the group typically gather at 5:30PM before the meeting at the Baker's Square near the library. Meetings are held at the Palatine Public Library (700 N North Ct, Palatine), no RSVP is required.

Also, the Consultant's Network encourages your input and suggestions for meeting discussion topics for upcoming meetings. If you are interested, contact Ben Miller at information@bmillerengineering.com. Chicago Engineer's Foundation Since 1963, the mission of the Engineer's Foundation is to award scholarships and grants to encourage the study of engineering and to work with engineering educational institutions and high schools in the Chicago area in promoting interest in engineering as a career.

The Chicago Engineer's Foundation (CEF) encourages our city's young people to pursue careers in engineering byrecognizing their talents and providing them with financial assistance for their engineering studies. What began in the early 1960's as a modesteffort to encourage study in the fields of engineering has grown into an annual incentive awards program in which the CEF donated over $91,000 in incentive awards to over 100 students in 2013.

The CEF provides incentive awards to graduating seniors of Chicago high schools who are admitted to accredited college or university engineering programs. For those award winners who maintain satisfactory grade point averages, the CEF continues to make annual awards throughout their college careers and at graduation. In addition to assisting the students financially, the CEF encourages the award winners to form a professional network among themselves that they can call on as they progress in the field of engineering. The CEF also fosters professional relationships with other engineering societies as a Steering Committee Member of the Illinois Engineering Council's Chicagoland Engineers Week.

See what CEF award winning students have to say about the program: Marcel, a sophomore at Michigan State: "A CEF Incentive Award provides me with a support group." Alicia , a sophomore at the University of Illinois: "What excites me about engineering is seeing what the future can look like. I am a research assistant studying self-healing carbon fibers. Imagine a world where aircraft and car scratches self heal! Engineers can create a better future." Anthony , a junior at Milwaukee School of Engineering: "The CEF Incentive Award allows me to buy books that otherwise I may not be able to afford." Adam , a senior at the University of Illinois: "I feel accepted and confident that I will reach my goal."

The Chicago Engineers' Foundation is celebrating 50 years this September by hosting an Anniversary Reception. We invite you to join in the festivities as we celebrate the past and look to the future. Members, donors, friends, alumni, and award recipients are invited to enjoy a cocktail reception featuring heavy hors`d'oeuvres and a signature bar.
