on a
budget!
When economic times turn tough, it may seem that beauty indulgences should be the first things to go.

But just because your budget calls for some belt tightening, that’s no reason not to look better than ever. The
trick is to bolster your beauty routine by making no- or low-cost moves that deliver maximum impact. From
hiding dark circles to boosting hair’s shine, here are Salaam Namaste’s top tips for trimming costs--and a few
years to boot!

Banish Brown Spots

Camouflage with care. First, dab
concealer that’s one or two shades
lighter than your foundation onto the
spot. Use a concealer brush--it’ll give
more precise coverage than your finger.
Follow with a dot of foundation that
exactly matches your skin tone. The
concealer lightens the spot, and the
foundation helps blend it seamlessly.

FEATURE - Beauty
Pump Up Hair’s Volume
Switch to mousse. It costs the same as other
styling products, but because it contains resins
that lightly coat strands to add thickness and
lift hair at the root, mousse delivers far more
oomph. Because us South Asian dames tend
to have coarser, frizzier hair, mousse will add
gloss and shine as well!

Dry hair upside down. To build volume when

you blow-dry, work a palm full of mousse
from your roots through to the ends, then flip
your head over and dry your hair away from
the scalp. Hair should be barely damp before
you flip it back up and style it.

Brush in fullness. Using a round brush to

style hair builds in more volume. Pick a
medium-size brush (for longer hair) or small
(for shorter)--the full circle of bristles will
give roots a lift as you blow-dry, brushing in
the opposite direction the hair is going to lay.
Hook the brush under a 2-inch section of hair
at the root, and lift as you roll it through to the
ends--all the while following the brush with
the dryer. Keep the nozzle above your brush
and pointed down to increase shine.

Restore Your Locks’ Luster

Give yourself a weekly hot-oil treatment. Save a bundle
by substituting olive oil for pricier hair-repair products.
Spread the oil liberally through dry hair, put on a plastic
shower cap, then cover with a hot towel for 30 minutes.
Wash it out thoroughly, then rinse with cold water to seal
the cuticle and trap added moisture. When the hair shaft is
infused with oil, the cuticle lies flatter, so your hair looks
smoother and shinier.

Keep a cool head. Heat opens hair’s protective outer layer,

damaging strands and creating frizz. Frequently cooling
the hair while styling helps keep your cuticle flat. If your
dryer has a cool-shot button, use it to deliver a blast of
cold air after drying each individual section. (This also
helps lock in your new style.) If it doesn’t, we suggest
holding your style in place with your brush for about 30
seconds to let hair cool off.

Plump Thin Lips

Think pink. All too often desi women seem to reach
for the ‘dark walnut’ or ‘amaretto espresso’ shades
in the cosmetic aisle. Dark colors call attention to
the size of your lips, emphasizing thinness and fine
lines around your mouth. Instead, choose a lipstick
that mimics the color of your lips when you were
younger.

Define your lips. After applying lipstick, line just at

the outer edge of the natural border of your mouth
with a pencil in a shade that exactly matches your
lipstick. Don’t try to draw on a bigger pout--it’ll only
look fake.

Reduce Redness
Get milk. Soak a clean washcloth
in cold milk and place it over your
face for 10 minutes. Milk contains
proteins, fat, amino acids, and
vitamin A--all of which reduce
redness and calm irritated skin.
Bonus: The lactic acid in milk
exfoliates, so skin looks soft and
glowing. If you have a darker
South Asian complexion, this will
help your skin tone look more
glowing, and less ashy.

Give Eyes a Lift

Curl lashes correctly. When lashes are
clean and dry (wet ones won’t hold a
curl), position the curler at the root of
lashes and give three firm pumps. Release
and repeat. Holding it steady doesn’t cre-
ate a natural-looking, fluid curl

Create a long-lasting curl. Heat your curl-

er with your blow dryer for 15 seconds
first. The warmth holds the bend better.

Minimize Under-Eye Circles

Be generous with your concealer. The biggest mistake
women make is using too little concealer. Start by
putting on eye cream--concealer can settle into fine
lines of all skin types, especially drier complexions that
most desi women have. Then apply a generous layer of
concealer from the inner corner of the eye around to
the outer corner with a concealer brush. Pat and press
the product into the skin to blend. If there is still any
darkness visible, apply a second layer of concealer.
Set the concealer with a dusting of face powder that
matches your foundation.

Caffeinate Your Eyes

Tea bags can perk up tired-looking eyes. The
caffeine helps shrink the underlying dark
blood vessels and forces out some of the
liquid that creates puffiness. Soak tea bags in
hot water for a minute before plunging them
into ice water for a few seconds. Lie down
and apply them directly to your eyes for 15
minutes.

FEATURE - Beauty
Brighten Your Smile
Mix your own whitener. Brushing with a paste
made of baking soda and water a few times a
month removes superficial staining and whitens
teeth by a shade or two. The graininess neutralizes
stains and polishes teeth but isn’t abrasive enough
to wear down your enamel.

Keep teeth whiter, longer. To sidestep stains when

drinking red wine or coffee, chase your drink with
a handful of crunchy raw vegetables. They have
a brushing action that can rub away newly setting
stains.

Choose the right lipstick shade . Colors with blue

undertones make teeth appear brighter. To figure
out which of your lipsticks fit the bill, we recom-
mend lining up three or four shades on your bath-
room counter--in comparison to each other, it will
be more obvious which are blue-based and which
have yellow or gold undertones that bring out the
yellow in teeth.

Replace Your Makeup
Switching from powder formulas to creamier ones gives
your skin a soft reflective sheen. Cheeks tend to be drier
than your T-zone, so as soon as you use up your powder
blush, buy a light liquid or cream formula that imparts a
youthful glow instead of leaving skin dull and matte.

How to strengthen the

How many times have you seen other fathers and

Those simple questions have been given complex

How to strengthen
the Father-Daughter
relationship

While fathers certainly love all their children, it sure

seems that more dads spend a lot more time with their sons.
Perhaps they think that they have more in common with their
boys, or maybe they are a little intimidated by the girls.

However, with a little more understanding, fathers
can feel just as comfortable around their daughters as they do
their sons. It is certainly important for fathers to connect with
their daughters. So what can a father do to create a loving and
secure relationship with his daughter?

Start on Her Birthday.

Fathers who best create this positive relationship start on the day she
is born. Get involved in her life from the very outset. Take an active
role in caring for this baby girl. The more time you spend with her
earlier, the easier it will be to continue building the relationship later.

Tell Her She’s Beautiful.

This will sound a little corny to some fathers, but it is important.

Modern culture and the media often give our daughters messages
that they need to be the right weight, wear the right makeup, dress
stylishly, and sometimes immodestly to be beautiful. When you tell
your daughter she is beautiful, emphasize the importance of being
beautiful inside – more than skin-deep.

Write Notes and Letters.

You may remember from your dating years that girls love cards,
notes, and letters. Take the time occasionally to write your daughter
a letter expressing your feelings, letting her know how you feel about
her and how proud you are of her. These little personal expressions
mean and lot to our daughters and are a good way of showing that
you love her.

Be a Great Example of Manhood.

The way your daughter sees you treat women makes a big difference
in how she will see men later in her life. Be on your best behavior
with her, her mother, and other female friends and relatives. Simple
courtesy and kindness will go a long way in helping her know what
to expect of men in her later life.

What Kind Of

Are You?

1
A new friend whom you don’t know that well just
invited you over for a party that she’s throwing
with a few of her friends. She says the dress code is
casual… You:

a. Wear just a tad of mascara and some lip balm—after all, casual
means casual
b. Do a light smoky eye and put on a little bit of lipstick, but don’t
overdo it, after all, there might be pictures from this party posted on Face-
book later and you don’t want to look drab!
c. Apply full desi makeup—complete with colorful eye shadow and
dark lipstick. Who knows, your future jeevan saathi could be in attendance
and you have to look perfect!

2
For your birthday, a close girlfriend treats you
to a day of pampering at the spa. When it comes
time for your manicure, you request:
a. French tips—they’re both classy and contemporary
b. A deep red nail polish—it’ll make you stand out and draw attention
to your lovely and well-lotioned hands
c. A simple clear coating… After all, acrylics break easily, and red nail
polish is just too bright. A clear coating makes your hands look clean and
natural.

3
You find out by accident from one of your loose-lipped
gal pals that your friends are throwing you a surprise
party. When your friend invites you over to their place
for ‘a casual evening’ you know it’s the night. When
getting dressed, you:
a. Put on a sparkly mini and high heels. Every girl should look like a princess
at her party, right?
b. Wear sweats. Hey, this is an excuse to be super comfy, and it’ll definitely
look like you were surprised.
c. Put on jeans and a cute top. You want to look nice, but don’t want to look
like you knew the surprise was coming

4
Your significant other invites you to a party that his
work is throwing to honor him at a super swank hotel.
The dress code says ‘semi-formal’ so you:
a. Wear a simple, understated black dress to the knees and minimal makeup.
After all, it’s his night and you don’t want to pull focus
b. Accessorize a bright red gown with body shimmer and party makeup…
It’s his special night, and you want to look super va-va-va voom for him, plus make
sure he gets a few comments from his co-workers on how hot his special lady is!
c. Wear a silky floor-length gown and a chignon. You want to look super
elegant and classy when he pulls you out on the dance floor in front of all his co-
workers.

5
It’s time to get your hair styled for a big party that
EVERYONE who is ANYONE will be attending. You
tell the hairdresser to:
a. Give you sexy loose waves and a side-swept bang. You want to look mod-
ern and sassy.
b. Put a few rollers in and give you a blow-dry but otherwise keep it the
same. You don’t want to look like you’re trying too hard.
c. Oomph you out with a heavy bang and poker straight hair. You want to
look like a movie star with all eyes on you!

Add up your total, and flip to page 70 for the results!

AM, and you’re good to go all day.

BANGS
For the desi diva who loves to look glam, bangs will
instantly add oomph to the simplest of looks. Bangs
are great at hiding old acne scars on the forehead,

Dear Didi... The sassy soul sister you WISH you had...

Dear Didi,
I have a major problem. I am in a committed relationship with my boyfriend, and
for the most part, things are going great… However, with summer around the cor-

It drives me crazy!

Do you know the feeling

FATHER
of growing up without
a father?
Ask a blind man what sight means to him or her - Father to
most of us is the light that guides our future.

the strong pillar Imagine what the branches of a tree would do with no
trunk - Father is the pillar that holds the family together.

Think about a writer with no pen – father is the advisor,

of the family supporter and a critic in the child’s life.

Seeing the empty sky with no sun or moon – father is like

the light in every child’s life.

With strong sun’s rays falling on the child – father is the

cloud that protects the child from harm.
BY ANITA VIJAYKUMAR
Just like they would be no house without pillars or a roof,
that’s what father is to a child – the strength, the pillar in
the family, the roof that protects his child from all the bad
in the world.

Fr o m t h e f i r s t f o o t s t e p s
of his child, the call for protection begins securing the baby
in its arms and promising it will never let go. Turning into
a toy ride, he carries his child on his back pretending and
makes believe the child that it’s a horse or elephant. He stays
strong while teaching the child to ride a bike and when the
child is hurt, without shedding a tear his heart cries and prays
for the child to get well soon.
Standing as a strong
supporter and adviser as the child grows, the father expects
his child to follow his footsteps and achieve the success he
has. Parting from his daughter at her marriage makes him
feel he is losing a piece of his heart but still holding on to all
her memories, he wishes all the happiness and blessings.
S e e i n g h i s s o n g r ow i n t o
a man he always dreamt of makes his joy grow in abundance.
Till he is alive, he makes sure he supports the family in every
way and with his last breath he hopes the family is protected
and stays bonded together forever.

In my opinion, the mother in the family is the string

of the necklace which keeps the beads tied together and
FAT H E R i s l i k e t h e r o o f o f
the house without which a house would never be a home.

Live for leaves! Even though lettuce
and spinach aren’t exactly common ingredients
in South Asian cuisine, it’s important to include
them in your diet for a couple of reasons. First,
these leafy greens will help you lose weight simply
by chewing them. In fact, most leafy items con-
tain less calories than one will exert just by chew-
ing them. Eating tons of these before indulging
in a main portion (like meat) will trick your body
into
thinking your full, without any empty calories!
Plus, the fiber content contained within
these leafy veggies are great for the digestive sys-
tem and will help your body to metabolize the
complex starches and carbs that are plentiful in
South Asian cuisine without turning them into fat.
The nutrients found in dark green vegetables pre-
vents certain types of cancers and promote heart

4 times a week, fitness experts predict that one
can lose 2-3 pounds a month without even trying!

GREEN Living
By: Rick Kolluri
Recently, the Global Summit on Climate Change* (held in Copenhagen, Denmark – attended by 2,500 delegates from 80 countries) and the
scientists from MIT Global Climate Model have concluded that the global warming problem is twice as severe as the previous estimations
on climate change; prepared six years ago. Studies indicate a down-right freighting revelations with an unparallel statistics on earth climate
change. The question is - what are we leaving your children with? We as a community there is much we can do. There is still hope; it’s in our
hands to make a difference to make small changes in our lifestyle to make the world a better place. We need to make personal contributions,
collectively, towards the sustainable future: to preserve resources, reduce household waste, save utility energy and live a healthier life.

Here is a continuation of our tip series on Green Living:

1. Change all your light bulbs to compact fluorescent light bulbs.
Take an extra step – tell your friends, neighbors, family, schools, stores and etc to switch to CFL bulbs – it not only saves electricity
(75% less) but it last longer (10 times). Let’s say you replace five light bulbs in your house, you would save $65 year, and if every-
one in US does that it would be around $6.5 billion a year; which would prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to emissions from
around 10 million cars. Fact: Last year, U.S. consumers spent about $1 billion to buy about 2 billion lightbulbs–5.5 million every
day. Just 5%, 100 million were compact fluorescents.

2. Use organic cotton towels instead paper towels.

3. Save energy and water by only using your dishwashing when full.

4. Use reusable shopping bags whenever you go shopping and keep them in your car at all times. Say neither when asked “paper or
plastic” at the grocery store - there are an estimated 100,000 marine animals are killed due to 380 billion plastic bags used yearly by
Americans. That’s around 26 per household in US.
11. Reduce packaging waste and buy concentrated items (ex.
5. Drink filtered tap water instead of bottled water. Detergent).

6. Save money by washing your clothes in cold water. 12. Take shorter showers to conserve water.

7. Unplug your appliances when they’re not in use. 13. Teach your kids to take five minute showers.

8. Buy clothing made from organic cotton. 14. Turn off the tap water while shaving or brushing your
teeth.
9. Save energy and time by cutting your food into smaller
portions while cooking. 15. Conserve water and fix your leaky faucets.

10. Reduce packaging waste and buy bulk items. 16. Recycle! Things you can recycle are: plastic, bottle, paper,
newspaper, magazines, glass and aluminum cans.

janam deti hai maa to chalna sikhate hain pita
har kadam pr bachcho ke rahnuma hote hain pita

nanhe masum paoudhe se bachche

is bagiya ke bagban hote hain pita

taklifon pr hamari bahut dukhi hote hain

ashk to bahte nahi pr dil hi dil me rote hain pita

kamyabi pr hamari kuchh kahen na kahen munh se

pr man hi man bahut khush hote hain pita

dhoop gam ki hum tak na pahunche kabhi

saya ban samne khade hote hain pita

puri karne ko bachchon ki farmaishen sari

kaam ke baad bhi kaam karte hain pita

kabhi jo data galtiyon pr hamari

ro ro ke kab so jate hain hum

pas baeth der tak dularte hain pita

jeevan me aati hain jab do rahen kabhi

sahi rah ka ishara kr dete hain pita

ladkhadate hain jab kabhi kadam hamare

sahara apni banhon ka de dete hain pita

unhen chhod jab yaha aajate hain hum

chijon ko hamari dekh dil bahlate hain pita

dene ko achchha mustakbil hame

punji jeevan bhar ki hum pr luta dete hain pita

khush rahen betiyan duniya me aani

karj le ke beti ka ghar basa dete hain pita

apne dil ke is tukde ko

bhari aankh se bida kar dete hain pita

yahan aake ye bhi na sochte hain hum

ke jab na diya to kya khate hain pita

aaj samajh na paye chahe unke pyr ko
