2012!has!been!an!exciting!year!with!tremendous!development!in!our!services!to!the!street!children!and!youth!of!
Eldoret.!The!2012!results!of!our!activities!are!really!encouraging:!13!children!repatriated!back!home,!10!children! placed!in!school,!3!children!placed!in!Children!Homes,!4!youths!placed!in!vocational/apprenticeship!courses,!and!2! youths!graduated!into!independent!living!off!the!streets.!One!of!our!greatest!accomplishments!this!year!was!opening! the!Drop3In!Center!from!3!to!5!days!a!week.!The!more!days!we!are!open,!the!more!opportunities!we!have!to!provide! a!safe!place!for!children!to!learn,!play!and!grow!away!from!the!dangers!of!street!life.!Our!extended!days!enabled!us! to!have!additional!time!for!feeding!street!children!and!for!education,!rehabilitation!and!case!management.! A!fundraising!board!comprised!of!young!and!enthusiastic!Americans,!all!of!whom!have!worked!directly!with!Tumaini! in!Eldoret!in!the!past,!assisted!Tumaini!to!raise!funds!to!run!its!core!programs!in!2012.!In!one!of!the!fundraising! efforts!dubbed!Back!to!school!Campaign,!the!board!raised!over!6,000!USD!to!support!street!children!going!back!to! school,!all!from!individual,!personal!donations!!!They!have!assisted!us!in!developing!a!donor!database!and!selling!the! ornaments!and!jewelry!we!make!at!Tumaini,!in!addition!to!grant!writing,!marketing!and!networking.!!
One!of!the!most!challenging!issues!that!we!faced!in!2012!was!seeing!children!who!have!been!placed!in!either!school! or!back!home!bounce!back!to!the!streets.!Despite!this,!we!continue!to!find!ways!to!improve!our!services.!In!2012,!we! did!this!by!involving!children!in!our!Monitoring!and!Evaluation!process,!conducting!monthly!meetings!with!peer! leaders!on!the!streets,!and!benchmarking!with!other!successful!street!children!organizations.!!In!our!2012! Monitoring!and!Evaluation!exercise,!children!requested!that!we!have!a!place!where!they!can!spend!their!nights!away! from!the!dangerous!and!risky!streets.!As!a!program,!we!realize!this!is!a!much!needed!service!that!will!give!us!more! time!to!prepare!these!children!for!a!life!off!the!streets!before!we!reintegrate!them!back!home.!! Our!aspiration!in!the!coming!year!is!to!expand!our!program!model!and!open!a!rehabilitation!transitional!center!to! complement!the!services!of!the!drop3in!center.!This!is!a!new!and!adventurous!journey!that!the!Tumaini!Family! comprising!of!street!children,!youths,!staff,!members!of!the!board!and!partners!are!excited!to!undertake!!! Our!work!these!past!two!years!has!attracted!funding!from!two!great!organizations:!Discover!the!World!(DTW)! Foundation!and!Save!the!Children,!an!international!non3governmental!organization!promoting!childrens!rights!and! well3being.!!DTW!helped!fund!Tumainis!core!operations!and!programs,!supporting!nearly!50%!of!our!annual!budget! this!past!year.!!Save!the!Children!funded!several!specific!projects!supporting!children!with!education!support,! promoting!psychosocial!rehabilitative!activities!at!the!centre,!providing!vocational!training!and!job!opportunities!to! youth,!and!raising!community!awareness!on!the!issues!of!street!children!through!Tumainis!outreach!and!advocacy! work.!!Thank!you!Discover!the!World!and!Save!the!Children!for!being!our!key!partners!in!helping!this!vulnerable! population!and!combating!one!of!the!great!injustices!of!the!work:!children!living!and!working!on!the!street.! Our'Mission' '

' ' ' The' mission' of' The' Tumaini' Childrens' Drop3In' Center' is' to' empower' street' children' in' Eldoret,' Kenya' with' the' hope,' knowledge,' skills,' opportunities'and'resources'to'find'a'healthy,'permanent'alternative'to' street' life.' The' Tumaini' Childrens' Drop3In' Center' is' a' comprehensive' service' delivery' and' access' center' for' street' children' in' Eldoret.' ' We' conduct'outreach'on'the'streets'and'provide'a'center'for'street'children' to' rest,' wash,' play' and' learn' away' from' the' dangerous' street' environment.' ' We' provide' basic' health' care' services' and' link' street' children'to'Moi'Teaching'and'Referral'Hospital'and'AMPATH'(Academic' Model' for' Providing' Access' to' Healthcare' of' the' Indiana' University3 Kenya' Partnership).' ' We' provide' empowerment' and' rehabilitative' intervention' activities' that,' along' with' case' management' and' community' collaboration,' will' allow' street' children' to' abandon' street' life'for'a'healthier,'happier'and'more'productive'life.'These'future'paths' vary' widely' and' may' include' returning' to' school,' learning' vocational' skills,' gaining' employment,' starting' a' business,' reuniting' with' their' families,' living' in' a' children's' home,' living' communally' or' even' living' independently.' 'The' Tumaini' Childrens' Drop3In' Center' supports' and' empowers' them' towards' their' chosen' future.

MONITORING'AND'EVALUATION'
To!measure!the!impact!of!our!work,!we!carried!out!a!Monitoring!and!Evaluation!project,!graciously! funded!by!the!Clifford!Kinley!Family!Trust!Grant!from!Purdue!University.!!This!project!included!both! quantitative!and!qualitative!assessments,!and!looked!at!both!process!and!outcome!indicators.!!We! used!this!project!to!help!build!Tumainis!capacity!in!tracking!and!data!collection!so!we!know!how! many!children!we!serve!in!each!of!our!departments!and!specifically!how!we!use!the!resources!we! have.!!For!example,!we!know!more!robustly!track!outreach!activities,!drop3in!center!attendance,!and! health!care!services!rendered.!!This!also!helped!improve!our!case!management!system!to!more! systematically!develop!case!histories!of!each!child!and!monitor!each!childs!progress!toward!their! exit!strategy!off!the!street.! From!June!to!August!2012,!we!conducted!a!qualitative!monitoring!and!evaluation!assessment!with! the!children!who!attend!Tumaini,!using!a!tool!called!Photovoice.!!The!Photovoice!project!sought!to! use!photography!and!focus!group!discussions!to!empower!a!group!of!street!children!and!youth!to! share!their!opinions!about!Tumainis!impact!their!lives!in!a!meaningful!way.!The!results!indicated! Tumaini!was!doing!a!good!job!but!also!needed!restructuring!in!its!operations!and!programming!in! order!to!better!serve!children!and!youths!on!the!streets.!In!summary,!the!results!showed:!many! street!children!and!youth!enjoy!Saturday!football!outreach,!although!there!is!need!to!scale3up! needed!outreach!services!like!medical!outreach!and!safe!sex!education!out!on!the!streets;!children! and!youth!appreciate!the!importance!of!education!and!many!children!want!to!go!to!school,!but! home!life!is!challenging;!older!street!youth!are!specifically!in!need!of!Kenyan!identification!cards,! vocational!training,!and!small!business!development!so!that!they!can!secure!meaningful!and!lawful! work;!and!Tumaini!needs!to!ultimately!go!further!to!overcome!the!immense!hurdles!of!glue!huffing! abuse!and!abject!poverty!and!family!discord!at!homes!in!the!community,!by!providing!a!temporary! shelter!in!the!form!of!a!Transitional!Center!to!allow!intense!rehabilitation!and!a!more!robust! approach!to!helping!children!abandon!street!life.!!This!will!also!go!further!in!preventing!recidivism,! or!children!bouncing!back!to!the!streets!after!initially!placed!back!home.!!! A!good!organization!needs!good!staff!to!meet!its!mission.!Tumaini!carried!out!a!bi3annual!staff! evaluation!program!to!improve!the!organizational!management!at!Tumaini!and!to!identify!areas!for! improvement.!The!June!2012!staff!evaluations!revealed!that!staff!were!comfortable!with!their!jobs! in!Tumaini,!were!knowledgeable!on!specific!job!responsibilities!as!well!as!broader!organizational! goals!and!had!a!good!relationship!with!other!staff.!Areas!for!improvement!were!evident!in!three! core!areas:!making!sure!job!descriptions!were!accurate,!the!need!for!more!tools!and!materials!for! carrying!out!responsibilities,!and!the!need!for!more!training!and!other!capacity!building!resources.! The!management!and!Board!of!Directors!continue!to!address!these!challenges.!!To!reach!this!goal,! Tumaini!through!the!support!of!Save!the!Children!carried!out!a!series!of!trainings!on!child3staff! relationships,!team!work,!and!child!rights!and!child!protection..!We!continue!with!weekly!staff! meetings!where!people!share!concerns!and!new!projects!they!are!working!on!as!well!as!monthly! meetings!between!connected!departments.!! ! ! !
Next'steps'
1. Program!Model!Expansion! Through!our!monitoring!and!evaluation!process,!it!became!clear!that!we!needed!to!expand!our! program!model!in!order!to!ultimately!achieve!our!mission!of!empowering!street!children!to!find!a! healthy,!permanent!alternative!to!street!life.!!We!have!concluded!that!offering!children!a!more! permanent!escape!from!the!streets!will!ultimately!lead!to!more!effective!and!efficient!exit! strategies.!!This!expanded!model!will!add!to,!not!replace,!our!current!model!of!outreach,!drop3in! center,!rehabilitation,!case!management!and!exit!strategies.!!This!expanded!model!will!take!the!form! of!a!Transitional'Center!that!will!be!a!temporary,!overnight!shelter!for!street!children!and!youth.!! Our!core!mission,!programs!and!departments!will!stay!largely!the!same,!but!this!Transitional!Center! will!afford!us!the!opportunity!to!focus!on!rehabilitation!more!intensively,!to!break!the!bond!of!glue! huffing!abuse,!and!to!overcome!challenges!of!poverty!and!domestic!violence!that!exists!in!many!of! these!childrens!homes.!!! As!much!as!the!drop3in!centre!has!many!advantages,!such!as!being!able!to!provide!food!and!other! basic!needs!to!a!large!number!of!street!children!Monday3Friday,!it!also!has!disadvantages.!Every'day' at'5pm,'the'children'who'participate'in'Tumainis'programs'and'activities'that'aim'to'get'them'off' the'street,'must'return'back'to'the'street'and'its'environs.!Many!street!children!are!physically!and! psychologically!tied!to!the!street.!Providing!interventions!in!the!daytime!may!be!inadequate!to!break! this!connection!with!the!street,!especially!for!children!that!have!spent!longer!living!on!the!street!and! for!those!more!heavily!involved!in!glue!huffing.!! Tumaini'therefore'plans'to'start'providing'an'overnight'shelter'and'housing'program'that'provides' a'243hour'off3the3street'environment'for'eligible'children.''This'overnight'housing'will'be' temporary,'and'our'case'management'system'and'exit'strategies'will'still'be'in'place.''This'will' enable'Tumaini'Social'Workers'to'effectively'rehabilitate'them'from'glue'addiction'and'anti3social' behavior'before'reintegrating'them'back'to'their'families.'Figure'1'shows'a'modified'Tumaini' model'to'illustrate'this'approach.'' A'transition'center'in'many'ways'addresses'the'challenges'of'a'daily'drop3in'center'by' offering'children'a'safe'environment'that'is'completely'isolated'from'the'street.'Children' are'provided'shelter,'food,'education'and'health'services,'and'rehabilitation'from'drugs'or' abuse'without'having'to'return'nightly'to'many'of'the'dangerous'consequences'of'street' life'that'Tumaini'tries'to'address,'such'as'glue'use,'unsafe'sexual'practices'and'physical'or' sexual'abuse.'Not'only'would'a'transition'center'protect'children'from'the'physical' dangers,'children'are'also'separated'from'the'psychological'connections'that'often'keep' them'on'the'street,'such'as'peer'networks.'Currently'Tumaini'is'sourcing'funds'to'buy'land' and'build'a'transitional'centre.'We'seek'your'support'in'achieving'this'vision.'

2. Community!Work! Billy!and!his!grandmother! them! to! get! money! to! buy! food! and! pay! my! rent! before! going! to! school.! When! the! head! teacher! learned!about!my!struggles!through!a!neighbour,!he!summoned!the!area!chief! and!the!Child!Protection!Committee!formed!by!the!Tumaini!to!ask!my!father!to! support!me!but!it!was!all!in!vain.!My!fathers!neglect!and!denial!tormented!me,! but!one!thing!I!swore!to!myself!was!I!will!study!hard!and!be!an!exemplary!pupil! in!school.!When!the!Social!Worker!from!Tumaini!visited!me!in!school,!the!head! teacher! shared! with! him! about! my! struggles! and! Tumaini! decided! to! pay! my! rent! and! food.! I! now! had! ample! time! to! study! and! my! hope! was! restored.! When! I! was! almost! sitting! for! my! KCPE! exams,! the! Tumaini! Social! Worker! visited!again!and!brought!me!a!success!card!signed!by!the!board!members!and! staff!at!Tumaini,!I!almost!cried!due!the!great!love!that!they!had!for!me.!I!had! just!buried!my!father!the!previous!week!and!I!felt!empty!despite!him!denying! me! support! when! he! was! alive.! But! with! Tumaini! family! on! my! side,! I! had! nothing! to! be! sad! about! anymore! as! I! had! something! to! live! for.! Being! the! leading!pupil!in!my!class,!I!promised!to!give!the!best!result!in!my!KCPE!exam! 2012.!I!am!now!waiting!for!my!results!and!looking!forward!to!joining!a!national! high!school.! Billy' passed' well' with' 331' marks' out' of' 500.' He' has' joined' Usenge' High' School'A'one'the'best'schools'in'his'County!'He'wants'to'be'an'engineer'and' help'build'roads'and'bridges'in'his'rural'home.'

The'Outreach'Department'aims'to' Reach'out!to!children!in!their!own!environment!and!earn!the!childrens!respect!and!trust.! Communicate'with!children!and!youth!and!encourage!them!to!participate!in!the!activities!

Follow3up!with!children!and!youth!who!havent!been!attending!the!center!regularly.!! Provide'psychosocial!and!medical!services!with!our!health!care!department.!
2012'Successes'
Outreach'in'the'Street/Community' We!created!an!outreach!log!to!help!us!track! the!children!and!youth!we!reach!on!the! street.!In!2012!we!reached!over!2000+! children!and!youths.!!! 70!children!and!youths!reached!(59!males!and! 11!females)!during!our!Saturday!outreach.!! Uniforms!and!equipment!provided!to!our!5! street!youth!football!teams!to!compete!in! football!tournaments!held!within!the! community.!The!matches!helped!raise! awareness!in!the!community!about!Eldorets! rising!street!child!population.!!! We!received!a!big!boost!in!our!awareness! program!from!Save!the!Children!who!donated! tents,!movable!goal!posts!and!equipment!that! enabled!us!to!effectively!reach!out!to!the!to! the!community!and!other!stake!holders! through!sports.!! 32!children!(9!girls!and!23!boys)! participated!in!our!photovoice!project!and! exhibited!their!photos!to!key!stakeholders! and!community!members!to!help!educate! the!community!about!what!its!like!to!live! on!the!street.!' ' Outreach'in'the'Barracks' A!total!of!6,600!condoms!were!distributed! to!youth!in!the!street!barracks!as!a!way!of! curbing!the!spread!of!sexually!transmitted! diseases!and!unwanted!pregnancies!! 18!boys!were!recruited!through!the! outreach!program!to!participate!in!a! circumcision!program!in!the!center.!! 345!children!(45!females!and!300!males)! and!11!barrack!leaders!were!surveyed!as! part!of!our!monitoring!and!evaluation! study.!The!findings!were!analysed!and! used!to!tailor!Tumaini!Programs!to!the! childrens!needs.!! In!addition!to! our!M&E! surveys,!we! held!7! meetings!with! barrack! leaders!to!help!us!understand!the! changing!environments!on!the!streets!and! to!gather!information!on!children!who! have!bounced!back!to!the!streets!after! having!been!repatriated!through!Tumaini.!!! !

The'Health'Care'Department'aims!to! Provide!health!education!to!the!street!children!and!youth!in!Eldoret'! Eliminate!barriers!to!health!care!that!exist!for!street!children/youth!and!provide!services!

At!the!Tumaini!childrens!Drop3in!Centre,!the!health!care!of!our!children!is!of!utmost! importance.!Street!youth!are!constantly!exposed!to!diseases!like!malaria!and!tuberculosis! that!are!preventable!and!curable,!but!can!be!deadly!if!not!treated.! The!health!care!department!has!been!in!the!forefront!in!ensuring!that!health!issues! concerning!the!well3being!of!children!and!youth!at!Tumaini!and!the!barracks!are!dealt! with!effectively.!Major!activities!undertaken!in!2012!were!substance!drug!abuse! curriculum!sessions,!family!planning,!jigger!fumigation!and!management,!circumcision,! dental!care!check3up,!HIV/AIDS!counseling!and!testing,!and!TB!screening!in!the!barracks.! These!activities!were!accomplished!in!partnership!with!Uasin!Gishu!District!Hospital,! Successes!in!2012
TB'SCREENING''
In!2012,!TB!screening!was!conducted!in!April!at!Mangula!/Jua!kali!barracks.!Two!females!and! 22!males!were!screened!and!all!tested!negative.!One!street!youth!who!tested!positive!for!TB! in!July!2011!completed!his!medication!in!2012.!
JIGGER'FUMIGATION'
Jigger!Fumigation!took!place!in!infested!barracks! and!there!were!subsequently!few!cases!of!jigger! infestation!among!children!and!youth!in!2012.! Jigger!removal!was!also!performed!at!Tumaini.!'
DENTAL'CARE'CHECK3UP'
Visiting!dentists!from!Indiana!University!in!collaboration!with!Moi!University!School!of! Density!conducted!oral!check3ups!for!6!girls!and!26!boys.!!Children!in!need!of!follow!up!were! referred!to!the!Moi!dental!clinic.!Street!children/youth!were!educated!on!proper!ways!to! keep!their!teeth!healthy.!They!also!received!toothbrushes!to!continue!good!oral!hygiene.!!
FAMILY'PLANNING'AND'HIV/AIDS'COUNSELING'AND'TESTING''
47!women!were!provided!family!planning!counselling.!10!women!now!have!birth!control! implants!and!37!receive!depo3provera!injections!every!3!months.!! Kelli!Barbor,!a!visiting!medical!student,!in!conjunction!with!AMPATH!doctors!and!nurses,!led! an!educational!session!regarding!contraceptive!implants!as!well!as!HIV/AIDs!counselling!and! testing.!39!children/!youth!(10!female!and!29!male)!attended!the!session.!!29!street!children! were!tested!for!HIV,!of!which!2!were!positive!and!successfully!linked!to!care!with!AMPATH.!
CIRCUMCISION!
18!boys!underwent!counselling!and!circumcision!in!December!2012.!!During!the!healing! period,!the!boys!received!education!about!puberty!and!HIV/AIDs.!!They!discussed!their! future!role!in!Tumaini!as!young!men,!and!they!were!encouraged!to!take!initiative!and!set! examples!for!their!younger!peers!by!working!hard.!!
REFERRALS'
Tumaini!has!strong!partnerships!with!Moi!Teaching!and!Referral!Hospital!and!Uasin!Gishu! District!Hospital,!and!one!of!our!main!objectives!is!to!link!street!children!and!youth!to!the! existing!health!care!system!in!Eldoret.!!In!2012,!we!made!88!outpatient!referrals!and!7! inpatient!referrals!to!these!local!hospitals.!!!

2012'Successes'
Women'Empowerment:'Save!the!Children! funded!two!projects!targeting!both!street! children!and!their!parents.!One!of!the! projects,!the!women!empowerment! project,!trained!and!supported!20!women! on!how!to!save!their!income!effectively! and!work!together!to!help!fund!specific! livelihoods.!This!project!has!allowed!some! of!them!to!start!a!pig!farm!and!a!bakery.! As!a!result,!these!women!were!able!to! support!their!children!with!food,!shelter! and!clothing.!A!total!of!43!children!(34! boys,!9!girls)!were!supported!through!this! project.!! Beadwork'IGA:!The!beadwork!IGA!started! in!2009!and!has!continued!to!expand!over! the!years.!Our!products!include!items! such!as!Christmas!ornaments,!diabetes! bracelets,!key!chains,!and!jewellery.!This! year!we!had!a!large!demand!for!our! products!and!had!16!youth!(11!girls!and!5! boys)!earn!a!salary!from!this!IGA.!! Trolley'IGA:'The!trolley!IGA!also!began!in! 2009!and!has!had!at!least!one!youth! participate!in!it!each!year!since.!This!IGA! not!only!helps!youth!earn!an!income,!but! also!builds!rapport!among!the!community! members!with!whom!they!interact!with.!! ! Career'development'class:!This!class!is! offered!to!youth!at!the!center!to!help! them!think!about!and!plan!their!future.! The!class!assists!youths!in!developing!a! business!idea!and!teaches!them!skills!on! how!to!manage!a!small!business.!!This! year!we!had!18!youth!enroll!and!complete! the!class.!! Vocational'program:!In!2012!we!had!2! young!boys!express!an!interest!in!the! culinary!arts!and!1!young!girl!who!wanted! to!become!a!tailor.!The!center!has! enrolled!the!two!boys!in!culinary!school! and!they!are!expected!to!complete!their! courses!by!the!end!of!the!year.!!The!young! girl!will!need!one!more!year!of!courses! before!she!can!work!as!a!tailor!in!town.!! Apprentice'program:!The!apprentice! program!currently!has!one!youth!working! as!an!apprentice!to!a!mechanic!in!town.!! National'identification'card:!This!year!we! were!able!to!get!7!youths!an!ID!card.!! National!ID!cards!are!a!necessity!when! applying!for!jobs!in!Eldoret.!Most!street! youth!experience!many!barriers!to! receiving!an!ID!card!from!the!government.! Tumaini!has!worked!with!the!government! to!make!it!easier!for!those!who!are!18! years!or!older!to!receive!an!ID!card.!

2013!will!be!our!4th!year!since!the!inception!of!Tumaini.!We!plan!to!use!the!platform!of!the! 2012!successes!to!grow!and!improve!our!existing!programs.!!We!plan!to!expand!our! outreach!program!with!the!ever3important!mission!of!earning!our!right!to!serve!by! reaching!out!to!more!children!and!youths!through!sports!and!other!psychosocial!activities! like!music!and!dance.!We!will!also!implement!our!community!awareness!project!in!order! educate!the!community!on!the!plight!of!street!connected!children!and!youths,!and!form! new!partnerships!with! the!community!so!that! we!may!all!empower! street!children!to! abandon!street!life.!The! healthcare!department! will!grow!its!referral! system!to!the!local! hospitals!and!also!plans! to!provide!optimum! family!planning!services! to!street!mothers!and! girls.!The!education! department!will!work!closely!with!the!case!management!department!to!place!more!children! into!school.!!A!key!area!of!improvement!is!our!follow3up!of!children!and!families!once! children!have!been!repatriated!back!home!and!placed!in!school.!!We!hope!to!drastically! decrease!the!recidivism!or!bounceback!rate!to!the!streets!by!following!up!more!closely! and!involving!the!local!community!in!supporting!these!children!and!their!families.!!With!a! recent!grant!from!the!Power!of!One,!the!livelihood!department!is!embarking!on!placing! several!new!youth!in!vocational!training!and!facilitating!the!acquisition!of!Kenyan!ID!cards,! as!well!as!job!placement,!for!several!more.! ! Ultimately,!2013!will!be!a!year!of!growth.!We!will!be!expanding!our!program!model!to! include!a!Transitional!Center.!We!continue!to!evaluate!our!programs,!listen!to!the!children! and!youth!that!we!serve,!and!respond!to!meet!their!needs.!The!Tumaini!Transitional!Center! will!build!on!our!experience!over!the!last!3!years!and!forge!a!new!path!for!our!program.!!Our! focus!will!be!on!more!intensive!substance!abuse!and!psychosocial!rehabilitation,!improved! community!partnerships,!and!more!intensive!case!management!and!home!follow3up.!!Our! aim!is!simple:!Empower!street!children!to!leave!street!life!and!never!turn!back.!In!the!end,! we!will!work!tirelessly!to!achieve!this!mission.!!
