Book Review
If Jesus were Mayor,
by Bob Moffitt

This is a groundbreaking gem on what it means to live out the Christian faith in a
world that desperately needs to hear the gospel. The title of this little book forces
us to re-examine the vital role that the church should be playing in this needy world.
As Evangelicals we had always shied away from anything that had the slightest hint
of liberalism.

Bob in this small, though provoking, book challenges the Church to reconsider how
it does its mission. Although most of us are only interested in the spiritual man,
there is a need for us to present a gospel that embraces all of life. As I read this
book, my own paradigms were challenged and I was forced to critically examine
how I live out the faith on a day to day basis.

Yes, the world needs spiritual salvation and there is a need for us to emulate the selfless example of the Good
Samaritan. Real transformation, argues Bob, is complemented by biblical principles that allow those out of the
fold to visibly see God in action. The principles that Bob shares are practical and can be implemented in various
contexts. Ben Wong (Co-ordinator of Global Cell Church Mission Network) had this to say about the book: “I
would enthusiastically recommend Bob and his book to all who want to know the heart of God and serve Him
according to His will. Your eyes will be opened; your life will be challenged; your thinking will be stimulated; your
theology will be enhanced; your ministry will never be the same.”

JIKA Generation is the title of our new Life skills manual which has just
been released.

The new manual has 27 modules covering a range of topics relevant to


Grade 9 and 10 learners. The topics include; bullying, drugs, anger management,
grief, stress, abstinence, AIDS, media and marriage.

JIKA is the Zulu word for ‘turnaround’ or ‘transformation’. Our aim at Scripture Union is to change young people’s lives, to turn
them around bringing them into a living relationship with Jesus Christ. We use our Life skills material largely within the school
context; teaching young people how to manage their lives and to make good decisions.
