From the Pastor:

Rev. Daryl W. Allen

INSIDE THIS ISSUE

Greetings Brothers and Sisters! Last week, a member of our congregation shared an article with me that I want to share with you. It is entitled Dear Young Parents with Children in Church and it is written by Jamie Bruesehoff. You are doing something really, really important. I know it's not easy. I see you with your arms overflowing, and I know you came to church already tired. Parenting is tiring. Really tiring. I watch you bounce and sway trying to keep the baby quiet, juggling the infant car seat and the diaper bag as you find a seat. I see you wince as your child cries. I see you anxiously pull things out of your bag of tricks to try to quiet them. And I see you with your toddler and your preschooler. I watch you cringe when your little girl asks an innocent question in a voice that might not be an inside voice let alone a church whisper. I hear the exasperation in your voice as you beg your child to just sit, to be quiet as you feel everyone's eyes on you. Not everyone is looking, but I know it feels that way. I know you're wondering, is this worth it? Why do I bother? I know you often leave church more exhausted than fulfilled. But what you are doing is so important. When you are here, the church is filled with a joyful noise. When you are here, the Body of Christ is more fully present. When you are here, we are reminded that this worship thing we do isn't about bible study or personal, quiet contemplation but coming together to worship as a community where all are welcome, where we share in the Word and Sacrament together. When you are here, I have hope that these pews won't be empty in 10 years when your kids are old enough to sit quietly and behave in worship. I know that they are learning how and why we worship now, before it's too late. They are learning that worship is important. I see them learning. In the midst of the cries, whines, and giggles, in the midst of the crinkling of pretzel bags and the growing pile of crumbs, I see a little girl who insists on going two pews up to share peace with someone she's never met. I hear a little boy slurping (quite loudly) every last drop of his communion wine out of the cup, determined not to miss a drop of Jesus. I watch a child excitedly color a cross and point to the one in the front of the sanctuary. I hear the echos of "Amens" just a few seconds after the rest of the community says it together. I watch a boy just learning to read try to sound out the words in the worship book or count his way to Hymn 672. Even on weeks when I can't see my own children learning because, well, it's one of those mornings, I can see your children learning. I know how hard it is to do what you're doing, but I want you to know it matters. It matters to me. It matters to my children to not be alone in the pew. It matters to the congregation to know that families care about faith, to see young people... and even on those weeks when you can't see the little moments, it matters to your children.

Prayer serves as the backbone of the church. It is what supports all our efforts of ministry. In that spirit, you are invited to hold these persons in your prayers and thoughts. Just as the Spirit needs healing, so does the body. The two, it seems, go together in Gods plan.

FROM THE PASTOR: (continued from page 1) It matters that they learn that worship is what we do as a community of faith, that everyone is welcome, that their worship matters. When we teach children that their worship matters, we teach them that they are enough right here and right now as members of the church community. They don't need to wait until they can believe, pray or worship a certain way to be welcome here, and I know adults who are still looking to be shown that. It matters that children learn that they are an integral part of this church, that their prayers, their songs, and even their badly (or perfectly-timed, depending on who you ask) cries and whines are a joyful noise because it means they are present. I know it's hard, but thank you for what you do when you bring your children to church. Please know that your family -with all of its noise, struggle, commotion, and joy -- are not simply tolerated, you are a vital part of the community gathered in worship. Folks, several years ago this article would have not had much bearing on our congregation. But, that is not the case now. We have almost 30 children in our congregation, from infants all the way to high school aged young adults. We also have several college aged, young adults that are going to school locally. My heart is overjoyed at how this segment of our congregation has grown over the last several years. I tell you all this to ask for your prayers. Prayers that we can craft, develop, and increase our ministry opportunities for these children and young adults. I humbly ask that you pray for the Holy Spirit to move within us so that we can effectively reach out and offer programming that will speak to them where they are in their walk with Christ. This segment of our congregational family is no longer missing, they are here. May we, as the body of Christ, reach out to them, embrace them, and make them feel loved! Have a great month!

PUMPKINS!

PUMPKINS! PUMPKINS!

News from Roy The pumpkins are coming!!!! We expect our first delivery on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 4 PM and we need everyone who is able to help unload. Remember some lifting is required. HOWEVER, we have lots of jobs for those unable to lift, so come and have fun and enjoy some refreshments. We also need sellers and story tellers, sign-up at the Connection Station. This is the churchs fundraiser, so lets all be part of it. The second load will arrive Thursday, Oct. 17 at 4 PM. There will be a Pumpkin Patch workday on Monday, October 7th at 9 AM.

Story Teller News The pumpkins are coming! The pumpkins are coming! And so are the kids! And we need story tellers! The pumpkins will arrive on October 9, and the stories will start on October 14. Every year, we host preschoolers and kindergarteners from all over Marion County. They come between 9:30 and 11:30 am. We read stories to them and they play in the patch. This is one of the most rewarding events at the Pumpkin Patch. A lot of these kids have never been to a patch, theyve never sat on a hay bale and a lot of them have never seen a Little Red Wagon. We provide the books and you provide the voice. If this is a ministry you would enjoy, please contact Terri Silvola-Finch at 369-0614.

THE SCOUTING SIDE

Pack 112 Hello Druid Hills! Well, we started the year with a bang with the largest recruiting number ever! We even broke our record. We currently have 65 boys. We are thrilled to have so many boys that are interested in scouting. We are getting ready for our fall events. We started off with our first camping weekend in the beginning of Sept. Next, we are looking forward to our annual car wash in Oct. This year, we are doing two; one on Oct. 5 at Pep Boys onSR 200 & the other on Oct. 26 during the Pumpkin Patch at DHUMC. Then Oct. 18-20, we will be participating in Cuboree which will be held at Camp Sozo in Ocala this year. As always, we are looking forward to our weekly Den meetings on Monday nights at 6:30 pm, where the boys enjoy a variety of fun & interesting activities. Thank you for your on-going support! If you have any questions about Pack 112, you may contact Netha Lawrence at 895-8242 or nlawrence@ocalapack112.org. Troop 425 Troop 425 is starting our year off with the girls being awarded their Bronze award for work they did over the summer with Daisy kindergartners. This is a huge honor that is well deserved for the amount of work the girls put in. With the use of the churchs facilities, we had 9 new girls join scouting along with three of their mothers becoming Girl Scout Daisy leaders. The impact the girls had on the Daisies, parents & even other leaders is still being discussed. Our troop is now split again with Juniors (4/5 grade) & Cadettes (6/7/8 grade). We are always welcoming new girls & ideas for community service projects. For information, please contact Jen Althiser at 817-5364. LAY SERVANT MINISTRIES Fall training will be held Saturday, Oct. 26 & Nov. 2, 2013 from 9 am to 4 pm. (Both days are required.) First Williston UMC is hosting the fall training. Dear Friend, Greetings from the Florida United Methodist Children's Home! As the new President, I'm always looking for ways to effectively and efficiently steward the generosity of our churches, businesses and individual donors. With that said, I would like you to assess our new plan for requesting and receiving Christmas gifts that you so faithfully provide our residents. This year, we would like you to prayerfully make donations of gift cards in order to present to our residents in care. This is going to be an incredibly exciting Christmas for our children on campus, because we are listening to their requests and reaching out to our United Methodist family to help us surprise our children. Our children would like gift cards this year so that they can go shopping and get the specific gift they would like to have. As you know, our children don't have the money to shop like most young people, so this will be a new and exciting time for them during this special holiday season. We are asking that you please purchase gift cards in any increments of $5, $10, $20, $25 and $50 to stores like Wal Mart, Target, and Best Buy. Our goal is to be able to give every child in our care $150.00 in gift cards. If this happens, just think how excited a child will be, knowing that $150.00 can be spent on something special they want as opposed to personal effects to which their $30 monthly allowance is used for during the year. Here is a wonderful example of how this could work: Every year in July, the United Methodist Men host a Christmas in July dinner, and guests bring toys to put under the Christmas tree. This year, they shifted focus on our need for financial gifts, giving us more flexibility. Even though, they still had a few gifts placed under the Tree, guests gave cash donations allowing them to raise over $1,200 to purchase gift cards for our youth. Furthermore, now through early December, they will have an Angel Tree available with wishes from our kids hanging from the branches, but instead of asking for unwrapped gifts in response to our children's wishes, they will attach envelopes to the angels and ask for gift cards. All in all, I'm looking to take care of you, our gracious donors, along with the needs of our ever -changing community living in our care. Again, I thank you for your love and prayers that cover our children and this Ministry. Sincerely, Becky Dotson President and CEO

Annual fundraiser for Interfaith Emergency Services The event will be held October 24th at the Southeastern Livestock Pavilion & dinner will be served from 6:30 to 8:30 pm (event will continue until 10 pm). Florida fare, including frog legs, venison, gator tail, fried turkey, smokes pork, chicken & fish, with all the favorite side dishes will be served. This is the perfect opportunity to relax & visit with friends, while giving to a great cause! Interfaith will receive dollar to dollar all monies from tickets we sell, which will help feed Marion County families in need over the upcoming winter season. Tickets are $25 per person. Please call Sonya at 352-629-8868, ext. 33 for more information.
