K-3 Alphabet Knowledge Benchmarks

Use the charts below to identify each student’s level of alphabet knowledge. Follow the
progress monitoring schedule according to the student’s level of alphabet knowledge.
Students identified as strategic and intensive will require individualized support and
practice.

Alphabet Knowledge - FALL
K-3 uppercase Alphabet Knowledge
Assessment Instructions: Use the test template to assess each student’s knowledge of
uppercase letters. Display the line with the letter of the student’s first name. Ask the
student to point to the first letter in his/her name. If the student is able to point to the
correct letter, ask the student to name the letter. If the student names the letter
correctly, continue with the rest of the uppercase alphabet sheet. Circle each letter that
the student identifies correctly. Record the number of correct responses in the box.
Say these specific directions to students: Point to the first letter in your name. Tell
me the name of that letter.
