Electric heater-circulator unit

Electric- hydronic heating - universal - inexpensive - reliable
Benefits of the electric heating system To heat with electricity offers distinct advantages over other heating systems: - low purchase price, - low installation cost, - no cost for storing fuel, - no boiler compartment or storage rooms for oil necessary, - no cost for procurement of fuel, - no chimney necessary, no cost for cleaning the chimney, - low maintenance cost, - easy retrofit in existing apartments and houses, - high efficiency also at partial load, - no exhaust gas or smell, - no potential danger by leaking gas or oil. With the new energy efficient houses, the use of electric heating systems is a viable alternative to conventional heating systems. The influence of increased consumption of primary energy at the power plant and higher cost of electricity is no longer a decisive factor. The greatly improved insulation of new buildings has drastically reduced the heat requirement. For an apartment with 100 m2 a total heating capacity of 6 kW is often sufficient. This means that during the heating period an average heating capacity of little more than 2 kW will be needed. This can be achieved easier with an electric heat source rather than with todays boilers, since their capacity is much too high for these applications. In addition, conventional heating systems have losses due to the start of a burner or due to partial load in spring and autumn whereas electric heaters use only energy when it is really needed. Another important incentive for the Electric heater-circulator unit can be given by the very attractive electricity prices offered by some utility companies for electric heating. The Electric warm water floor heating In contrast to conventional hydronic systems where there are always a boiler and radiators, electric floor heating offers two possibilities, the direct heating and indirect heating with warm water. The electric direct heating uses heating wires placed into the slab which heat the floor surface. This method however has a distinctive disadvantage: Usually such heating wires produce heat independent from the surrounding temperature. If for instance a part of the floor is very well insulated by a plastic foam sofa, a cabinet or boxes, such heating can result in dangerously high floor temperatures. Such overheating can only be eliminated by integrating sensors which deactivate the heater partially when a set temperature is exceeded. With electric warm water heating, an electric boiler warms up water which is then circulated through the floor heating system. The water can only dissipate heat while the floor has not yet reached the water temperature. This system therefore has a self regulating effect. As soon as the floor in an area of the room has reached a certain temperature the temperature difference to the heat carrier becomes smaller so that in this area less heat is transferred to the floor. This also applies to areas of the floor which are exposed to direct sun. Since the floor in these areas has a higher temperature already, less heat from the heat carrier will be transferred due to the smaller temperature difference. This is not possible with direct electric floor heating, since in this case each part of the floor receives the same heat input. A further advantage of the electric warm water heating is the possibility to change the heat source. As soon as the favorable conditions for electricity are no longer available, the electric heater can be replaced by an oil or gas boiler. If this possibility is taken into account when the floor heating is designed, the change can be made with little expense. For these reasons, the indirect electrical floor heating is always preferable to a direct electrical heating system.

Electric heater-circulator unit

The Electric heater-circulator unit - the design
In the design of the Electric heater-circulator unit we used a completely new approach. As the name Electric heater-circulator suggests, the spherical motor pump with its whisper quiet operation and the electrical heater form an integral unit that guarantees the most compact and efficient heat source for a hydronic system. The spherical motor pump conveys the water through the rotor/impeller into the enlarged pump housing which contains the heating elements that heat up the water. The swirl created by the impeller improves the heat transfer from the heating elements. The heated water exits the unit through the discharge port situated at the upper part of the housing. A safety valve and a bleed valve are placed at the highest point of the heater-circulator unit. A pressurized expansion tank is attached to a port near the inlet port. A safety temperature cutout and an electronic control are placed in the terminal box. This control performs absolutely noiseless switching of the electric heating elements, provides constant temperature control, shuts the pump off with a time delay, and offers reliable protection against overheating. All parts of the Electric heater-circulator that come into contact with the heat carrier fluid are completely corrosion resistant. The LAING Spherical Motor The circulator integrated into the Electric heatercirculator unit has a spherical motor developed by LAING. The spherical motor pumps have proven reliable in decades of successful service. The only moving part is the rotor/impeller unit that glides on a ceramic stationary ball suspended by electromagnetic forces. The rotor/impeller unit tilts automatically to allow small dirt particles to flow through. This bearing principle eliminates frozen shafts, leaky seals and noisy bearings. The pump therefore stays quiet over its lifetime.

The LAING Electric heater-circulator unit - applications
The LAING Electric heater-circulator units are the least expensive heating solution. They are suited for single family houses as well as for apartments with either floor heating or radiators. The LAING Electric heater-circulator units are also ideal for room additions which cannot be integrated into the existing heating system or for vacation homes and weekend homes. A further application is the heating of bathroom floors in summer, which otherwise would require operation of the main heating system. Due to its compactness and its extremely quiet operation the LAING Electric heater-circulator unit Typical applications Electrically heated substation with manifolds for floor heating Electrically heated central substation for radiator heating can even be installed in apartments or hallways. Because of its flat design the unit fits inside wallmounted cabinets so that no separate space is needed. Room temperature controls as well as outside temperature controls can easily be added to the integrated noiseless electronic constant temperature control. The installation of the LAING Electric heatercirculator requires only the electrical connection and the connection to the floor heating system or the radiators which results in low material and labor costs.

LAING Electric heater-circulator units - Overview
Electric heater-circulator unit - Model EPR These LAING Electric heater-circulator units are compact electrically heated boilers with an integrated circulator pump. Their performance ranges from 6 to 15 kW, sufficient for the space heating of a single family home or an apartment. Due to their compactness and a depth of only 110 mm they can be mounted inside a wall or placed in a recess. All components are corrosion resistant so that they can even be used in floor heating systems with plastic hoses which are not oxygen diffusion proof. The use of the LAING spherical motor pump guarantees quiet operation over its lifetime. The integrated electronic control enables noiseless switching of the electric heating elements. A safety temperature limiter protects against overheating.

Electrically heated substations with manifolds - Models EPR SD and EPR XD These compact units reduce the installation time and expense to a minimum. The units contain all components necessary for electric floor heating or electric radiator heating. They consist of an Electric heatercirculator unit with integrated electronic control, a plastic manifold, a flowmeter for each loop, a pressurized expansion tank, compression fittings and safety devices. All components are assembled and factory tested for leaks. The units can be delivered in a cabinet or on mounting bracket. All components coming in contact with the liquid are corrosion resistant. Electrically heated central substation - Model EPR Z The central unit combines an Electric heater-circulator unit with its electronically actuated switch Model EPR, a pressurized expansion tank, connection fittings and safety fittings in an extremely compact package. The central unit should be used when there is not enough space for the compact unit or when the radiator heating only requires a single loop. All components coming in contact with the liquid are corrosion resistant and all units are factory tested for leaks.

Electric single room heater Model EH 2 The Electric heater-circulator unit Model EH is a compact small electric boiler with a heat performance of up to 2 kW. It is mainly intended for the heating of a single room. This heater is especially suitable for bathroom floor heating during the time of year when the central heating system is shut off. It is also suited for the heating of room additions or rooms in attics. The heater contains a heating element of 2000 W output, a quiet LAING spherical motor pump, a safety temperature limiter and a constant temperature control. Electric heater-circulator unit

Electrically heated substation with manifolds - Model EPR SD/XD
Customer requests for a unit that combines all components necessary for electrical heating led to the development of the electrically heated substation with manifolds. Installation of this unit requires only the mounting of the unit to the wall or into a recess and the connection of the pipes and electrical supply. With a minimal depth of only 112 mm the LAING substation can be placed inside almost any wall. Due to the adjustability of the cabinet the unit can be adapted to practically all conditions of installation. Installation Due to the compactness and the quiet operation of the LAING substation it is possible to install the unit in the same place where normally the heating circuit manifold is placed. This means that the piping connections and installation cost are reduced to a minimum. The easiest solution is the use of the steel cabinet which contains all components and which can be easily built into a wall. The only visible parts will be the frame and the door, both of which are galvanized and can be painted. This makes it possible to adapt the visible parts of the substation to the surrounding wall. If the unit is to be mounted inside an existing cabinet or recess, the substation on mounting brakkets can be used. In this case, the unit is attached to the wall with the mounting brackets. If desired, the unit can be covered up after installation. The components of the system The LAING Electrically heated substation with manifolds contains the following components: Pressurized Expansion tank All expansion tanks used in the LAING units are corrosion resistant. The standard model of the substation is equipped with a 6 liter membrane expansion tank. Upon request, the unit can be equipped with an open stainless steel expansion tank. Manifold with flowmeter All LAING substations are supplied with plastic manifolds. The manifolds are assembled from individual segments so that even after installation the number of loops can be increased or decreased. The manifolds are equipped with a flowmeter for each loop. This makes it easy to adjust the individual loops without having to consider the valve characteristics. The viewing glass of the flowmeter is filled with water only at startup. Since the fluid exchange thereafter is restricted, the glass remains transparent even after prolonged use. Due to the double walled design of the manifolds the

heat transfer to the cabinet is minimized. All LAING substations are delivered complete with compression fittings. The required size of the fittings needs to be indicated on the order. Filling valve To facilitate the filling, the substation has a check valve built into the feed side. During the filling this valve is closed so that the water flows through the loops and not through the heater-circulator unit. The check valve replaces manual shut-off valves found on conventional manifolds. Cabinet The cabinet of the substation for installation inside a wall is made of solid steel. The frame consists of hot galvanized sheet metal, the walls of the cabinet and the door are made from galvanized sheet metal. The depth of the cabinet can be adjusted from 112 to 177 mm, its height from 1000 to 1070 mm. Depending on the number of loops, the width of the cabinet is either 1000 or 1330 mm. The mounting rails allow for horizontal and vertical adjustment of the substation inside the cabinet. Cabinets for installation on the wall are available upon request. Mounting brackets The mounting bracket for substations without cabinet consist of a solid structure of metal rails. The rails will be attached to the wall. The substation then can be adjusted by sliding it on the rails. For transportation, the rails are mounted on a wooden board which has to be removed before installation.

Description The electric single room heater with cabinet EH 2 S consists of an Electric heater-circulator unit EH 2 with an electric heating capacity of 2 kW, feed and return line manifolds for two loops, filling and draining fittings and a pressureless expansion tank with fill height indicator. All components are assembled in a galvanized steel cabinet for mounting inside a wall. The pressureless expansion tank ensures optimal air purging for the whole system and renders the safety valve and pressure gauge unnecessary. The completely assembled unit reduces the installation expense to a minimum. The unit can be placed inside a recess and requires only the electrical and pipe connections. Applications The single room heater with cabinet EH 2 S is applicable wherever heating independent from a central heating system is required. Such applications need a separate expansion tank. Due to its compact design the unit can be placed almost anywhere without a problem. Attention must be paid to the fact that the unit has to be placed above the heating loops due to the pressureless expansion tank. It is even possible to place the unit inside an 110 mm thick wall. Due to the whisper-quiet operation of the spherical motor pump, the unit can be installed inside rooms. The integrated control elements allow the room temperature to be controlled with just an additional room thermostat such as our RT or RTU.
