P-scan System 4

High Performance Ultrasonic Inspection System

P-scan 4: PSP-4 with PC. In the background the APS-3 scanner

Description P-scan System 4 is a high performance ultrasonic inspection system. It is designed with special attention to fast setup time, small equipment size, and ease-of-use, and is thereby offering increased productivity in use. Furthermore, the system has great flexibility to adapt to different scanning situations and covers all major ultrasonic inspection techniques. P-scan 4 family The P-scan 4 family consists of three systems: P-scan 4+: The well-known high-end system with remote operation, for general use and for use in special applications, e.g. subsea scanning.

P-scan 4 Lite: A compact, battery powered system, designed to be operated by a single operator. P-scan 4 Flex: Versatile inspection system with the possibility to combine ultrasound and eddy current techniques.

See separate data sheets for technical specifications. All members of the P-scan System 4 family use the same software and share the same user interface and data format. The system is controlled from a standard PC through an Ethernet link. It runs under the Microsoft Windows operating system. For operation in the field an industrial grade (notebook) PC is recommended.

Inspection types The system supports a great variety of inspection techniques: P-scan for weld inspection T-scan for corrosion mapping Through Transmission for composite testing TOFD for detection and sizing Full A-scan recording for off-line processing.

Parameter set-up In the parameter set-up windows the use of colours, tab index, and graphics makes it easy to navigate through all necessary parameters and to keep the overview.

All inspection types can be included in the same job and data from all inspections can be collected concurrently. The system supports a number of off-line processing techniques, e.g. SAFT and UltraSIM and data can be exported for use in other systems. User interface The main window gives the overview of the loaded job and its set-up. From the main window all functionality of the system is only a mouse click or keyboard press away: Parameter set-up Ultrasound calibration Scanning and data analysis Scanner control.

Scanning and data analysis The screen set-up window provides functions to set up the screen with data presentation windows for scanning or analysis to suit the users preferences and needs. The screen set-up, the display parameters, and any changes made are saved and can be recalled at any time.

Data presentations A variety of data presentation windows exist in P-scan System 4 to support the different inspection types: P-scan, Tscan, Through Transmission, TOFD and A-scan. All data presentation windows use the same interface structure: Individual floating windows: To set up windows on the screen, a screen set-up function is available Display parameters are controlled from windows which pop-up when needed Coupled markers for measuring Printing and on-screen reporting functions All functions available on context sensitive toolbar, from keyboard, or with mouse. On-line monitors may be included in screen set-up for signal monitoring. Off-line presentations available for further processing of data, e.g. processing of A-scans with a SAFT algorithm.

Channel view The Channel view is a multi-channel presentation where any number of channels can be shown. The data are displayed with a common X-axis. The channels can display images from different inspection types in the same window. This comprises P-scan, T-scan, and Through Transmission views, TOFD images, and special alarm channels, which may also activate external alarms on-line. The channels can have user defined names, individual sizes, and may be ordered and grouped. The Channel View window is controlled by set-up parameters and markers similar to the presentation windows.

Reporting/Data export P-scan System 4 has a great variety of reporting tools, comprising: Copy/Paste: Presentations and images can be transferred for use with the preferred word processor for report generation and printout. Printout: Images can be printed directly from the presentations, with support for isometric printing and printing on fan-fold paper. Annotations: The images can be annotated on the screen, and the annotations can be transferred to reports in a word processor. Weld preparation: The weld contour can be overlayed on the P-scan presentation for use during defect characterization. Report forms: User defined report forms are used to automatically extract selected parameter values from the data set for use in a report in a word processor. ASCII export: Image data and A-scans can be exported in ASCII format for use with the preferred spreadsheet program for data analysis. Log book: Scan and systems events are automatically logged in the job. Scanner control The system has built-in scanner controller that allows scanners to be connected to the system without extra hardware. The scanner controller is compatible with the complete range of FORCE Technology digital scanners. These scanners range from simple single axis scanners to complex 6 axis robots. Scanners may have up to 20 axes and can be designed from a system of mechanical scanner modules with integrated control electronics. The scanners are supported in software by a specialized scanner control window or they may be controlled from the remote scanner control unit. P-scan System 4 also includes tools for configuration of special scanners. Ultrasonic system The transmitter pulse can be varied both in width and amplitude for optimization to the transducer. The receiver has selectable frequency filters and uses a logarithmic amplifier with a dynamic range of up to 120 dB, which eliminates the need for a range selector and TVG circuit implemented in hardware.

A-scans can be digitized at sample rates up to 120 MHz with a resolution of 0.25 dB. A high resolution A-scan measure mode is available. In this mode A-scans from the probes can be displayed in linear or in logarithmic scale, either rectified or full wave mode. The high resolution A-scan mode is used for calibration and to measure probe and material parameters. The results can be transferred to the data set automatically.
