This course is designed to provide a practical understanding of fracture mechanics principles through a combination of lecture and problem solving workshops. Design and failure analysis for monotonic and cyclic loaded components will be covered. Take away a new understanding of topics such as fracture toughness testing, ductile fracture testing, stress corrosion cracking and fatigue failure. Linear and non-linear fracture mechanic concepts and methods appropriate for a given loading or failure mode will be applied to make sense of this sometimes confusing discipline. WHO SHOULD ATTEND? Failure Analysts Engineers SUGGESTED PRE-REQUISITE College level class in materials and mechanics LEARNING OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, you should be able to: Describe the principles of fracture mechanics. Apply Fracture Mechanics to solve engineering problems. Differentiate appropriate methodology for a variety of failure modes. COURSE OUTLINE 1. Introduction to Fracture mechanics 2. Linear elastic fracture mechanics concepts 3. Crack tip plasticity and R curves 4. Fracture toughness testing - KIc and K-R curves 5. Fatigue conventional, crack growth rate, threshold 6. Stress corrosion cracking - monotonic and cyclic 7. Applications - life prediction, leak before break, proof testing 8. Non-linear FM concepts - J integral, COD, handbook calculations 9. Ductile fracture testing - JIc, J-R curves, CTOD testing, common standards 10. Applications - failure assessment diagrams, design curves, fracture control plans 11. Problem solving workshop (integrated into lectures)
