Abstract ATTITUDES OF STANDARD SIX STUDENTS TOWARDS SCIENCE AS A SCHOOL SUBJECT A cross-sectional study was carried out among

the standard six students in Miri district, Sarawak. The objective of study was to determine the attitudes of standard six students towards science as a school subject. 80 respondents were selected randomly among standard six students from one of the school in Miri district. Students selected were multiracial group and involve both genders. Each student was required to give their perception towards science as a subject by fill-up self explained questionnaire, a modified science attitude scale by Fennema-Sherman, 1970. Findings of this study showed that standard six student have a positive attitude towards science as a school subject; students are showing great interest in doing experiments; there is association between liking science and doing experiment, which showed significant finding (p<0.05); there is no association between liking science and the important of learning science; there is no correlation between gender, race and income factor regarding positive attitudes toward science. Teachers, parents and students relationship are vital in the development of positive attitude toward science and developing scientific society.

Abstrak TINGKAHLAKU MURID-MURID DARJAH ENAM TERHADAP SAINS SEBAGAI MATAPELAJARAN SEKOLAH Satu kajian irisan lintang telah dijalankan di kalangan murid-murid darjah enam di daerah Miri, Sarawak. Objektif kajian adalah untuk mengkaji tingkahlaku murid-murid darjah enam terhadap sains sebagai matapelajaran sekolah. 80 respoden telah dipilih secara rawak di kalangan murid-murid darjah enam disalah sebuah sekolah di daerah Miri. Murid-murid yang dipilih adalah dari pelbagai kaum dan melibatkan kedua-dua jantina. Setiap murid dikehendaki memberikan pandangan mereka terhadap sains sebagai satu matapelajaran melalui borang soal selidik, yang dimodifikasikan dari skala tingkahlaku sains oleh Fennema-Sherman, 1970. Hasil kajian ini telah menunjukkan bahawa muridmurid darjah enam mempunyai pandangan tingkahlaku yang positif terhadap sains sebagai satu matapelajaran; murid-murid menunjukkan minat yang mendalam dalam mejalankan eksperimen; ; terdapat perkaitan di antara minat sains dan keminatan dalam menjalankan eksperimen (p<0.05); tidak ada perkaitan yang ditunjukkan antara minat sains dan kepentingan mempelajari sains; juga tidak terdapat korelasi di antara jantina, kaum dan pendapatan terhadap tingkahlaku yang positif terhadap sains. Perhubungan atau kerjasama di antara guru, keluarga murid dan murid amatlah penting dalam menghasilkan tingkahlaku yang positif terhadap sains dan seterusnya melahirkan masyarakat yang saintifik.
