Instructor Expectations: You must attend class regularly. Upon your fourth absence, you will be dropped from the course. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to read the syllabus and contact a fellow classmate for any information/assignments you may have missed.

You must show up to class on time. If you are not present when I take attendance (6pm), you will be marked absent. Since this course typically has a waiting list, enrolled students must attend all class sessions during the first 2 weeks or they will be dropped from the class. Late work will not be accepted. You will receive a zero for any assignments that are not turned in on time. I will not accept any emailed work. All assignments must be handed to me in-person during class time. This is a college course. I will treat you like adults, and I expect you to treat me and your classmates similarly. Any behavior that I deem to be disrespectful or disruptive will not be tolerated.

Coursework: In addition to in-class work and homework, you will write 3 papers for this course. The first will be a mid-term essay that demonstrates your knowledge of MLA format. The second will be a synthesis essay based on your reading of Therouxs The Mosquito Coast (5-6 pages). The third will be your final research essay (8-10 pages), which will be due at the beginning of finals week. Library Workshops The library faculty offers eight different workshops on research and library use. Attendance in THREE of these workshops is mandatory (combined they make up 10% of your final grade). While you can attend any 3 of the workshops, I would suggest Finding Books, Research Strategies, and Finding Periodical Articles Online. For more information, visit http://www.bakersfieldcollege.edu/library/workshop.asp. Note: Instead of the workshops, you can take Library/English 34. This is a thorough library research class which helps students master any academic library. If you pass English 34, you will get full credit for the workshops.
