Recycling/Upcycling
I have just learned through Croydon Transition Town that
Veolia are sponsoring a recycling/freecycling stall at
Surrey Street Market on 29 June. It will be a day of free
exchange of items. People can take items that they no
longer want and take away other peoples belongings. The activity is
from10amto 3pm. Veolia usually weigh the total amount brought in so
they can report this to the council for their recycling and reuse reporting
and try to encourage local charities to take part and advertise their
work on other stalls. Typical items include books, DVDs, clothes,
games, toys, crockery, electricals (PAT tested) and small furniture.
Readers may remember that SL reported, in December 2012, via
NOG, about Swansea Council 1 shop at Llansamlet recycling centre.
We are always looking for or offer a home for pre-loved items. Reuse
is any activity that lengthens the life of an item.
The MacLennan Scottish Group
Such a shame that the notification of the 32

and Music Festival arrived too late to be included in last months SL. I
could only tweet it for the attention of the many people who love
Scotland in Croydon. It is always a most enjoyable event.
Solicitors
It is not easy to find a good solicitor. For years, I had an
excellent one in ClaphamCommon but he moved away.
Then I found Nigel Leonard of Allen Barfields. He is good

own property sales department. Our next move will be
smooth. Please see article on page 34.

Christmas in May
Just arrived in my mail box:
Seasonal food markets in the
Square, providing a range of hot
and cold food stalls and selected
gift ideas. The markets will run
11am-3pm on the following
dates: 17 July, 25 September
and, lo and behold, 11 December Christmas Gift and Food
Market.
It was the first time
that I had spotted
a Christmas ad
this year. The
weather is still so
miserable and
cold that it does
feel that we are in
winter. It certainly
did when we went down to the coast: incessant rain and cold winds
tormented us but it was fascinating to watch the tide in Eastbourne
(see picture spread on pages 16 and 17).
By the way, on the way back, we ran into an exceptional Flea Market
in a disused church in Lewis, well worth spending a couple of hours in
it. It was about to close so we will return there because I only managed
to buy a 40s wooden biscuit barrel, at a most reasonable price.

FOCUS
on
A petition
I sign petitions but only after reading them carefully. It did not take long to
decide whether to sign Say NO to the press barons charter because I feel
strongly about the incredible damage that papers can inflict on the often gullible
public, unable to differentiate between slanderous papers and responsible and
factual journalism.
Hacked Off and its executive director, Professor Brian Cathcart, have been
criticised for the lack of transparency over funding. It may well be true that
Hacked Off receive money from people who do not want their donations made
public but these donations, along with those given publicly, enable Hacked Off
to operate on a budget which is a tiny fraction of the funds available to the
powerful owners of newspapers.
One cannot fight legal battles without money and it is hypocritical when some
ask for their accounts but not the Chancellor of the Exchequers or the PMs or
many others.
In order to understand what Hacked Off stands for, one could start reading
http://hackinginquiry.org/debunking/hacked-off-what-did-we-do-and-did-we-
win/ and then muse upon http://hackinginquiry.org/debunking/the-truth-
about-the-sunday-telegraphs-hacked-off-conspiracy-theory/ . The problem is
that many people do not read or, perhaps, cannot read a full article. For
example, one othe comments on the second article is If you dont like the free
press go and live in North Korea. (sic and in full)
Hacked Off is a campaign for a free and accountable press; it does not wish
to tame the press or to claim the country for the authoritarian Left. It has no
political affiliation and its Board Members and employees include members of
all three main parties as well as individuals with no political affiliation.
The Leveson report called for was an independent and effective system of
voluntary self-regulation subject to periodic inspection by a recognition body set
up by statute (or Royal Charter). This is the least that is required to protect the
public from the kinds of abuses that made the inquiry necessary.
Any of us could become a victim of press abuse like the McCanns, the Dowlers,
12

A contemporary cafe with great food
served in a pleasant and friendly
atmosphere at 219 Wickham Road,
in the Library Parade
13
the Watsons and many others who have taken a public stand against abuses
carried out by powerful national newspaper groups.
Hacked Off and victims of press abuse launched a petition calling for Levesons
recommendations to be implemented in full. The petition was publicly launched
by Gerry McCann and Christopher Jefferies 24 hours after Lord Justice
Leveson published his report.
We can add our voice to this once-in-a-generation opportunity to bring justice
to the victims of press misconduct and create a media that truly is in the public
interest, taking it from media barons and giving it back to journalists.
The press have hacked, lied, intimidated and intruded. But theyve been
caught, and theyve been investigated, and Lord Justice Leveson has
recommended legally-backed regulation, independent of politicians and the
press, to hold them to account. The victims of press abuse support his
recommendations.
Levesons Inquiry isnt the first into the culture, ethics and practice of the media.
1947, 1953, 1962, 1969, 1977, 1990 and 1993 all saw similar, government-
ordered inquiries after newspapers had been seen to be acting outside of the
public interest.
Why didnt the public hear about this? The tabloids love to report an injustice,
but not when theyre the ones in the dock. The Inquiries went unreported,
because the papers wouldnt frame and shame themselves.
But 2012 had something that 1947, 1953, 1962, 1969, 1977, 1990 and 1993
didnt have. The Internet. The media barons may have millions of newspapers
landing on doorsteps every day, but the public have Facebook, Twitter and
blogs. The tabloids have the megaphone, but if enough of us shout loudly
enough then we can drown them out.

More about coffee and Fungi
We drink quite a bit of coffee and I have a
special bucket where I put the waste coffee
grounds. Some time ago, NOG suggested
we used it in the garden because coffee
grounds contain nitrogen, calcium,
magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and
trace amount of minerals including copper.
These nutrients aid the plants growth. The soil
loves the coffee grounds for this reason.
One can also use coffee grounds in the compost or
work into the soil at the end of the growing season. The earthworms and
worms of all types love the grounds as they provide food for them. The
worms derive nutrition from the grounds and this increases their
production which means aeration of the soil, by breaking it up, mixing in
air, and their worm droppings. This in turn improves the soil structure,
water movement, nutrients in the soil, and ultimately increases the plant
growth.
Adding coffee grounds to the compost pile increases the internal
temperature of the pile, it heats up. The additional heat helps to speed
up the decomposition of the other components such as kitchen waste,
leaves, grass clippings, etc. The end product is nice black gold nutrient
rich compost. Try not to exceed more than 25% of the compost piles
content with coffee grounds or the balance will be off and the speed of
the decomposition will be affected.
Coffee grounds for plants as a fertilizer is a common practice. However,
not all plants like coffee grounds because coffee grounds increase the
acidity of the soil and even plants that like an acidic soil may overdose if
given too many coffee grounds all at once. When you find that your plants
are struggling and starting to turn yellow, stop giving the coffee!
Acid loving plants, especially blueberries and evergreen plants, will thrive
on coffee grounds. Plants that like a neutral or alkaline PH may not be as
happy because the grounds lower the ph making the soil more acidic.
Exactly what is acidic soil? Acidic soil has a PH between 4.0 and 6.8.
What is PH? In very basic terms, PH is the power of hydrogen, the
relative value of hydrogen in a substance. The more hydrogen ions in the
substance, the more acidic
it is. This is measured on a
scale of 0 to 14. A value 6.8
and under is considered
acidic or sour, 7.0 is neutral
and 8.0 to 14.0 is alkaline
or sweet.
One can also use coffee
grounds for slug and snail
control. Slugs dont like to
cross the barrier of
grounds as they are sharp
enough to penetrate their
bodies. You can place a
ring of coffee grounds
around the plants but at a
good distance from their
drip line. You must replace
them after the rain. Using
coffee grounds is definitely a good alternative to the high priced slug
bait products.
Some use the grounds as a deterrent for ants. I have never tried this
method and do not know anyone who has.
Used coffee grounds can be frozen or placed in an airtight container
to keep over the winter and start using as soon as the weather
permits. Make sure they are completely dry before storing them
because mould can form. If mould occurs, I simply rake the grounds
with a trowel that I keep in the bucket.
Fungi
I was looking up mushrooms online when I stumbled on a website that
explained how you can turn waste coffee into Gourmet Mushrooms. Most
Gourmet Mushrooms grow on wood, straw, or horse manure but the Pearl
Oyster Mushroom is very versatile and is able to use waste coffee grounds
as its food too.
Here is a synopsis from http://www.fungi-futures.co.uk/how-do-we-turn-
waste-coffee-into-gourmet-mushrooms/
20
21
When a cup of coffee is made, less than 1% of the coffee beans end up in
the cup. The spent grounds are still packed full of cellulose, lignin, nitrogen,
sugars and other nutrients which the mushrooms can make use of.
Usually with mushroom cultivation, you have to sterilise the compost you
are going to grow your mushrooms on, but the beauty of growing on coffee
waste is that the grounds have already been sterilised when going through
the espresso machine. You then mix the coffee grounds with shredded
cardboard and add it to the waste coffee to help mushrooms grow. The
cardboard provides a dense source of cellulose and other nutrients, and
creates good structure in the growing compost for the mushrooms to
prosper.
After that you add house-grown Mushroom spawn. So you now have a
mixture of waste coffee, shredded cardboard and fresh mushroom spawn
all made up under semi-sterile conditions, in the right proportions and
adjusted to the correct moisture content. This is then loaded into special
mushroom cultivation bags and incubated in the grow room for 3 weeks.
During this time, the mushroom spawn grows thousands of fine root-like
threads (called mycelium) out in a network across the coffee and cardboard
waste. This mycelium is able to break down the waste and extract valuable
nutrient from it to use as its food. When it has finally grown across the
whole compost mixture, it is now well established and ready to produce
delicious Gourmet Mushrooms from.
Some final checks to ensure each grow kit displays good healthy growth
and then they are ready to be sent out to our customers. When a hole is
cut in the bag, oxygen is introduced to the mycelium and in around 7 days
time, tiny mushrooms then begin to emerge. You can then watch in
amazement as every day the mushrooms double in size until around day
14 when they are ready to harvest and enjoy.
There is a lot more that goes on behind the process
but that, in a nutshell, is how you turn coffee and
cardboard waste into Gourmet Mushrooms!
If youd like to grow your own deliciously fresh
gourmet mushrooms at home, why not give one of
GroCycle Project growkits a go?
I might do just that but will have a go myself first!

Childhood diseases
Vaccination (MMR) became compulsory in Italy in 1999 between the
12
th
and 15
th
month in the life of a child followed by a second dose
between 5 and 6 years. However, I was a child well before that and I
had all childhood diseases. In fact, my mother made sure that we had
them all. We were, of course, vaccinated against polio and diphtheria
which are not childhood diseases. She took care of us through
chickenpox, measles, whooping cough, scarlet fever, mumps, and
German measles with rational nursing.
Measles are not the bubonic plague and I cannot understand the hype
that surrounds it. The UK government seems intent on vaccinating
every child in the country with MMR, which will no doubt make the
pharmaceutical industry very happy and rich.
After the scare in Wales, the media and establishment took the chance
to have yet another pop at Dr. Andrew Wakefield, whose 1998
research first raised still-unanswered questions over the safety of the
MMR vaccine. Dr. Wakefields measured response to the new round of
attacks powerfully brings home the fact that the voices of sanity in this
overheated debate are coming from those who question the blanket
advocacy of multiple vaccines for all children, for more and more
diseases. http://youtu.be/d7kbWfsygG4 M
People like Dr. Jayne Donegan, whose article on measles is a must-
read for every concerned parent, are raising alarm bells. Hardly
coincidentally, Dr. Donegan was, like Dr. Wakefield, the subject of a
General Medical Council witch-hunt one that fortunately failed. You
might find her article interesting and an eye-opener: http://www.jayne-
donegan.co.uk/measles-2013
Yes, there are about 170,000 measles deaths per years world wide
(2008 figures), but, as the World Health Organisation (WHO) states:
The overwhelming majority (more than 95%) of measles deaths occur
in countries with low per capita incomes and weak health
infrastructures Most measles deaths are caused by complications
associated with the diseases and Severe measles is more likely
among poorly nourished young children, especially those with
insufficient vitamin A, or whose immune systems have been weakened
by HIV/AIDS or other diseases. As high as 10% of measles cases
result in death among populations with high levels of malnutrition and
lack of adequate health care.
Measles outbreaks in unimmunised people tend to be mild in those
who do not have underlying medical conditions. In communities which
generally do not immunise, the attack rate in infants less than one year
of age is low because of protection by the superior maternal antibodies
derived from natural infection compared to those derived from
vaccination. Almost without exception, deaths occur in those with
underlying medical conditions or poor nutrition or in those religious
groups who refuse timely medical care when complications occur.
Those most at risk of complications from the disease are also those
least likely to produce a good antibody response from being given the
vaccine.
The state of your immune system and how you treat the illness when
you meet it are very important. Also, you get complications if you do
not treat infectious diseases correctly, whatever the state of your
immune system. The first step in this process is to recognise that the
infection is not your enemy but your friend. From an holistic point of
view, diseases causing fever and rashes are regarded as detoxifying
processes, enabling the body to clean itself out and go up a
developmental step. Suppression of such processes is thought to lead
eventually to long term, chronic illness.
Severe complications from measles can be avoided though supportive
care that ensures good nutrition, adequate fluid intake and treatment of
dehydration with oral rehydration solutions. Antibiotics should be
prescribed to treat eye and ear infections, and pneumonia.
I had measles with my sister: we were put to bed and given plenty of clear
fluids without much food. I remember lying in a warm room in the dark. It
was not pleasant but we recovered without complications of sort. Our
bodies do have an innate and intelligent immune system that, when
worked with and supported appropriately, rather than being over-
burdened, offers us about the best protection we could wish for.
Even now, I do not use any medication if I can help it and take no
antibiotics. If I am under the weather, I stay in bed and sleep. I eat a
balanced diet, mostly organic food, no meat and some vitamin
supplements at the change of seasons.

GLA Sketch by Andrew Pelling
With David Cameron ducking yet another
Prime Ministers Question Time commons
sketch writer Quentin Letts, no doubt
inspired by the Shirley Life Assembly
sketch was in the public gallery to cover
Mayoral Question Time with the
Conservative Partys aspiring leader in
waiting.
Boris earnest commitment to metropolitan
policies not that dissimilar from Ken
Livingstones may not have that much
impressed the Daily Mail journo. At least
Boris remembered to mess up his hair from its normally kempt state.
Lib Dem member Caroline Pidgeon worried
about 320,000 of public money spent by
Crossrail on photography and 1,000 of your
taxpayers money being spent on cake.
Boris policy on cake
Pro having it - Pro eating it
As ever Labour commissar Biggs had a show down with Boris leading
to the chair asking them both to behave. Green chair ruled that heckling
would only be allowed when quick and witty.
A discussion on Tube strikes initiated by ex-Tory MP and now a
Wandsworth & Merton Assembly member saw the Mayor asking that
strike votes should have a 50% turnout, a much higher turnout of course
that votes for the London mayoralty. Tracey suggested that Tube strikes
were a more important issue for his Conservative-led government than
some other things that irritated the voters likely referring to gay marriage
legislation.
The Mayor boasted of falling crimes. Tony Arbour the Tory Assembly
24
25
member for South West London bravely said that reported crime might
be down but that was likely due to people not bothering to report as
Londoners dont think that the system doesnt take crime reports
seriously. The Mayor said that the fear of crime was also down so he
though the fall in crime was real.
The Mayor said neighbourhood policing
was making the difference odd then that
hes cutting that back; Tory Kit Malthouse
also said that a target culture means that
school playground fights get counted as a
crime as they offer the police an immediate
detection result which flatters the Met.
Tory Assembly members were not being that supportive of Mayor Boris.
London rent hikes were out of control. Up 99 a month. The Mayor had
no real answer. Ten years to sort it said Boris.
The Mayor said he backed 1.3 million for each water cannon the Met
was buying but he did not favour their use they were in the Mayors
mind a bit like a nuclear deterrent as their employment would be
vanishingly unlikely.
Letts must hope that Prime
Ministers Question Time will
return soon, all a little bit too
municipal for Daily Mail
readers even if they would
salivate at the prospect of
rioters being washed down
the drain. Boris however
lacked the will for a hearty
hosing that county types
might like to see. No wonder
Tory voters are going UKIP these days. Londons clearly turning Boris
soft with their metropolitan ways.
Vegetable storage tips
Keep it fresh
Freshness is a major determinant of the flavour and nutritional
value of vegetables. At Riverford we grow, pick, pack and deliver
ourselves, so our vegetables are as fresh as they can be when they
reach the doorstep. They then need to be treated right until you eat
them. Centrally heated houses do most vegetables no favours and
their shelf life can halve for every 10 C rise in temperature. Here are
a few useful storage ideas to keep your vegetables in the best
condition possible.
Keep everything cool and give priority in the fridge to leafy salads,
greens and broccoli.
A good place to store vegetables is in a cupboard or larder on a
north-facing wall. It should have an air brick to allow air to circulate.
Otherwise, it can work well to hang a vegetable rack outside on a
shaded wall. If youve got room, a vegetable rack in a cool room or
dry outhouse is a good idea for root vegetables and cabbages.
Recyclable plastic bags can help retain the moisture of some
vegetables in the fridge, for example leafy greens, spinach, chard,
green beans, rhubarb and wild garlic
Potatoes
Keep them cool and in the dark to stop them sprouting. Never keep
potatoes in plastic theyll sweat and turn mouldy.
Beetroot, carrots, turnips, kohlrabi and fennel.
Keep the moisture in the vegetable and not the leaves by removing
any leafy tops as soon as possible.
Tomatoes
Tomatoes dont like being kept below 10 degrees C, so are best
kept at room temperature or, in summer in a cool vegetable rack,
rather than the fridge.
26
27
Sweetcorn
Sweetcorn on the husk has its own perfect storage container. Keep
in the fridge, just as it is.
Garlic
Keep the wet and wild varieties in the fridge, but dry garlic will be
happy in a vegetable rack or cool store.
Leeks
The bottom of the fridge or a cool vegetable rack is fine for leeks
Onions
Keep salad and spring onions in the fridge. Brown or red dried
onions should be kept cool and dry, a vegetable or hanging net bag
is ideal.
Squash
Keep squash and pumpkins in the warm and dry on as kitchen
shelf for example. Some squash will last all winter but pumpkins
wont keep for long.
There are lots of useful vegetable
storage, preparation and simple
cooking tips available at

About the OCA: Who We Are and What We're Doing
The Organic Consumers Association (OCA) is an online and
grassroots non-profit 501(c)3 public interest organization
campaigning for health, justice, and sustainability. The OCA deals
with crucial issues of food safety, industrial agriculture, genetic
engineering, children's health, corporate accountability, Fair Trade,
environmental sustainability and other key topics. We are the only
organization in the US focused exclusively on promoting the views
and interests of the nation's estimated 50 million organic and socially
responsible consumers.
OCA's overall political program is the Organic Agenda 2005-15, a six-
point platform calling for:
The conversion of American agriculture to at least 30% organic by
the year 2015, including major reforms in agricultural subsidies
and appropriations to help family farmers make the transition to
organic, develop local and regional markets, and adopt renewable
energy practices.
Fair Trade and economic justice, not so-called corporate-driven
Free Trade as the global norm.
A global moratorium on genetically engineered foods and crops.
A phase-out of the most dangerous industrial agriculture and
factory farming practices.
Universal health care with an emphasis on prevention, nutrition,
and wellness promotion.
Energy independence and the conversion of

Reliable sources in Washington D.C. have informed the Organic
Consumers Association (OCA) that Monsanto has begun secretly
lobbying its Congressional allies to attach one or more Monsanto
Riders or amendments to the 2013 Farm Bill that would preempt or
prohibit states from requiring labels on genetically engineered (GE)
foods.
In response to this blatant violation of states rights to legislate, and
consumers right to know, the OCA and a nationwide alliance have
launched a petition to put every member of Congress on notice:
If you support any Farm Bill amendment that would nullify states
rights to label genetically modified organisms (GMOs), well vote or
throw you out of office.
On Wednesday, May 15, an amendment to the House version of the
Farm Bill, inserted under the guise of protecting interstate
commerce, passed out of the House Agricultural Committee. If the
King Amendment makes it into the final Farm Bill, it would take
away states rights to pass laws governing the production or
manufacture of any agricultural product, including food and animals
raised for food, that is involved in interstate commerce. The
amendment was proposed by Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), largely in
response to a California law stating that by 2015, California will allow
only eggs to be sold from hens housed in cages specified by California.
But policy analysts emphasize that the amendment, broadly and
ambiguously written, could be used to prohibit or preempt any state
GMO labeling or food safety law.
Will the King Amendment survive the Senate? No one can be sure,
say analysts. However few doubt that Monsanto will give up. We can
expect that more amendments and riders will be introduced into the
Farm Bill - even if the King Amendment fails - over the next month
in an attempt to stop the wave of state GMO labeling laws and
initiatives moving forward in states like Washington, Vermont,
Maine, Connecticut and others.

Giovannas Column
At my sons school, I met a local
Spanish mother with a 5 years
old boy. She has always spoken
Spanish to him since birth. He is
now happily speaking and singing in both
Spanish and English.
It is a fact that knowing two languages can
enhance job prospects and open up further
avenues so, with more than 10 years
experience working with children and her wish
to balance family life and work, she decided to
open her own business, My Spanish Beacon.
She says: Becoming self-employed was challenging at the beginning as
all aspects such as marketing, accountancy
and administration had to be covered by
myself. Although challenging, I personally
found it very rewarding. Based in Bromley,
My Spanish Beacon is a friendly provider of
private Spanish classes for all ages and levels. I have recently started
weekly classes in Beckenham for children ages 3-11 years old following
La Jolie Ronde Programme (www.lajolieronde.co.uk). Being a Spanish
native speaker, I am able to offer a first class accent for the children to
copy and also excellent knowledge of Spain. With me the child will have
the chance to join in with action songs, rhymes, stories, games, art and
craft activities and pretend play. Learning is fun!
The compulsory MFL (Modern Foreign Language) Primary curriculum is
due to start in 2014 and she is also providing Spanish lessons to nurseries
that would like to promote their business with this additional tool in order
to appeal to current and prospective parents. She feels extremely proud
when she sees how confident the children become with their Spanish
after just a few lessons which her!
With her passion for teaching Spanish and affordable prices, My Spanish
Beacon is the perfect way to introduce children to a second language
and would give your child a fantastic addition to their education.
Please read on for more details.

Dear Parent/Carer
Hola! Languages classes for Children are starting
soon in Beckenham.
I am Spanish and started to work with children more
than 10 years ago. I am CRB checked and, as a La
Jolie Ronde licensee, I feel passionately that La Jolie
Ronde offers children a fantastic opportunity coupled
with a great deal of fun!
This is what my La Jolie Ronde language classes provide:
A unique structured language course established for 28 years
A native accent for the children to copy
Small classes with plenty of individual attention and learning with children
of his/her own age
Conversation, basic grammar, games, role-plays, rhymes and stories
An awareness of Spain, its geography and culture
Termly reports on your childs progress
Spanish certificates awarded on completion of each programme
The programme is designed to enhance their learning skills and to challenge
the children, which means that they excel in Spanish and develop their
language skills to the highest level possible.
Classes will start soon on Fridays from 4pm and will be held at Beckenham
Methodist Church (Bromley Road, BR3 5JE). An integral part of the course
is the fun activity book and interactive CD, to help with your childs learning
and lasts for a minimum of a year, at a cost of 19.99. Classes will be offered
at the rate of 5.50 per lesson, paid termly in advance.
Demand is high and places are limited to 12 per class. They will be allocated
on a first come basis.
For further information and/or to book your childs place, please email me at
myspanishbeacon@hotmail.com including the following details:
Name of child.
School name and year
Name of parent/carer
Contact telephone number.
Please let me know whether you are interested in booking your child a place

Allen Barelds property sales
New partnership set to boost local housing market
A
llen Barfields was formed in 2010 between MB Allen & Co and
Barfields. They have offices in Station Road West Wickham and
George Street Croydon.
Local solicitors, Allen Barfields, have opened their own property sales
department. Home-owners can now receive an all-in-one service with
their estate agent and solicitor under one roof, only one phone number
to ring, and one bill to pay.
The residential estate agency is provided by Peter Hayward (left in the
picture above), who has been selling property in and around the area
for over 20 years. He says: Because the estate agent and solicitor
work together as one, the transaction should be seamless and less
stressful, and save time, money and hassle for our clients.
Allen Barfields Property Sales are members of the Property
Ombudsman Scheme. For an introductory period, vendors pay no VAT
on the commission fee. You can email sales@allenbarfields.co.uk for
further details or phone Peter Hayward on 020 8777 2292.
35
Senior Partner Nigel Leonard (right in the picture) says: Our estate
agency service may be new, but Allen Barfields conveyancers have
been helping people to progress their property sales for decades. This
partnership provides extra value for our clients, and we look forward to
serving the local community in this new way.
Nigel has been with Allen Barfields since 1980 and qualified in 1981.
He specialises in commercial property matters. He says: I like using
my skills to facilitate the transaction and get clients where they want to
be. Married with three children, Nigel lives in Old Coulsdon and enjoys
reading, theatre, running and taking holidays in France and Italy. Nigel
was a governor of a local school, has played tennis on the same court
as Stefan Edberg (although not at the same time), and used to play
football where he once scored two own goals in the same match!
Allen Barfields did the conveyancing when Peter moved two years ago.
Peter says: They met all my expectations during the moving process,
and this was a significant factor in me joining the team and setting up
the sales department. Local people will no doubt see our striking blue-
and-orange signs starting to appear in the area soon. With our years
of experience, we are confident we can find the right buyer for our
vendors, and smoothly progress their sales.

Shops Update
In a previous life, I ran a series of pull-outs with pictures and details of
shops in Shirley. I might do that again, soon. For the moment, here is the
latest update for Wickham Road.
Bluebird Parade
Mr. Arun Patel left after many
years and did not even say
goodbye. Kavitha and
Thayanesant Karman have taken
over and totally transformed the
shop into a bright and user
friendly place. More about it next
month. Just one tip: their wine
prices are excellent and their
natural almonds are lovely. The shop will soon have a new sign but they
will remain Bonds of Shirley.
Poppy Parade
Great changes in this parade and at the
rear of it!
580-582 - A new restaurant will replace
Maywood. It looks as if it is part of a
small chain and is going to offer
Ottoman cuisine, which is a refinement
of Central Asian, Middle Eastern, Balkan
and Mediterranean cuisine. They offer
vegetarian dishes and welcome all sorts
of parties and will bring some much
need sparkle to the place. Their musical
website is quite different and appealing,
although I could not see any sweets
listed. I have already written to them
and also commented on some spelling.
http://www.kozrestaurant.co.uk/
42
578 - Britelite Windows have gone
and the place is sadly empty. Let
us hope that it will not remain thus
for too long because it would
blight the parade.
The skip outside might suggest
that somebody will move in soon.
I could not get any information to
date.
572 - A bright new shop has finally opened
where once was The Extra Special Tile
Company: Tea Cozy. It is fresh and offers gluten
free cakes, which is a bonus for many sufferers
of coeliac disease. A full report will appear next
month in Shirley Life and TripAdvisor.
Shirley Library Parade
248 - The shop has finally been let and A.
Yeatman & Sons, a firm of Funeral Directors, moved in. They are looking
for funeral
arrangers. Their
website has not
been updated for
some time but
you can phone
them on 020 8670 1127 or email
clairejsmithuk@yahoo.co.uk.
244 and 242 are empty and
waiting to be let. Chutneys
Indian restaurant has recently
closed down. Anthony Leonard
Associates Solicitors have
relocated to the Trinity School
Parade at 153 Shirley Road after
a very brief spell in Wickham
Road.
43
Shirley Inn Parade
182 - No takers, yet, for what was Lynns Fish Frames
Gallery but the shop is being
used as an Art Gallery and you
can hire space by contacting
Simon Barren on 07966 421 818
or barren.barren@btinternet.com
At the moment, there is an
exhibition of water pastels by
Sandra Barren. Simon was a
great picture-framer and so was
Lynn. They have left a big void in
Shirley.
Broom Road Parade
19a: Above
the Collar, a new hairdresser, has
recently opened. Jill said: Prejay
welcomes you to his new hair salon
with a shy smile. The bijou salon in
Broom Road has recently been
refurbished and is smartly
decorated in black and white.
Prejay spends time to discuss your
requirements. I had a wash cut and
blow dry. The wash was very relaxing. He works unhurriedly but
efficiently, cutting, shaping and drying. Overall it was a good experience
at a reasonable price.
17: Red Chillies have recently delivered a sleek new menu. They promise
freshly prepared dishes, cooked to the highest standards. Their head
chef has over 20 years of experience and offers a wide selection of
Traditional Indian dishes combined with a more modern and creative
approach of mouth watering Indian food. www.redchilliz.com

Nathalies Column
Are you Vata, Pitta or Kapha?
What body type are you according to Ayurveda?
There are 3 main constitutions in Ayurveda: Vata,
Pitta and Kapha. Most of us will have one
predominant constitution; a few will have two
predominant ones and an even lesser number will have three
constitutions in equal proportion.
According to Ayurveda, good health is when the constitution you are
born with is in balance. Stress, improper diet, poor habits, toxins
accumulation, seasonal changes, create imbalance in our constitution
which can lead to ill-health and disease.
Why not take the fun and quick questionnaire test on page 46 to find
out your Ayurvedic body type?
Base your choice from the column that best describes you. All the
words in that column need not apply for you to select it. Feel free to
make a selection from more than one column if you feel that two or
three columns are equally applicable.
Ayurvedic massage
Ayurveda as a whole system encompasses massages, herbal
remedies, nutrition, yoga and meditation. It aims to maintain or restore
good health by rebalancing the mind, body and spirit of a person.
At Garden of Pomegranates, we aim to ease symptoms and restore
44
45
balance using natural ways. Ayurvedic massage is one of the oldest
remedies in the world. It brings peace and tranquility to an overactive
and tired mind. It also removes the stresses of the body, alleviates
pains and aches, improves circulation and detoxifies the whole system
bringing energy and vitality back into aching bodies. Different
conditions, which Ayurveda believes are due to constitutional
imbalances, have different treatments which are best for them.
Different oils are also used according to the personality type. Warm
organic sesame oil is suitable for all types of constitutions. Vata types
tend to stress a lot so calming oils such as sesame are best for them.
Pitta types are prone to excess heat and therefore cooling coconut oil
is recommended for their constitution. Finally, kapha types tend to be
the more laid back and therefore need more stimulating oils such as
safflower or corn oil.
Ayurvedic massages also work on numerous key energy points of the
body including the Chakras. Most of my clients mention that it almost
feels like a spiritual experience. The reason is because Ayurvedic
massages and treatments see the body as a trinity of mind, flesh and
spirit and as such works on all levels to bring peace, harmony and
equilibrium.

Sutton Council's development control committee voted in favour of
the plan by a majority of 5 to 2 at a meeting on Wednesday 15 May
2013. All five Liberal Democrat members voted in favour of the
application and two Conservative members voted against.
The decision now has to be ratified by the Mayor of London and
members of the Stop the Incinerator campaign are urging people to
object on the basis that the incinerator will be built on Metropolitan
Open Land.
At present no date has been set for the stage 2 referral, however it is
expected to be in the next few weeks.

Mayor Boris Johnson
Greater London Authority
City Hall
The Queen's Walk
London SE1 2AA Date:
Dear Mayor Johnson,
Proposed South London Incinerator, on the Sutton/Croydon Border
I do not want an incinerator in my area because:
1. MOL: The proposed site is going to be built on Metropolitan Open Land.
We were promised that it would be returned to the community. The
density of population is high and there are few green spaces.
2. Air Pollution: Even modern incinerators still emit significant levels of
ultrafine particles, including worrying nano-particles, which add to air
pollution and are already known to cause birth defects, asthma and
cancer. We already have problems with air quality in the highly built up
areas near the site of the proposed incinerator. With recent studies
warning that air pollution is set to become a bigger global killer than dirty
water, why would we add to it?
3. Recycling: Our community is already increasing recycling and intends to
lobby manufacturers and supermarkets to cut packaging. I do not want
my legacy to be a threat to the health and quality of life of families,
neighbours and future generations, do you?
4. Alternatives to burning: There are greener alternatives to burning
rubbish up to 90% of waste can be recycled or composted and our
rates of recycling are improving year on year. People, businesses, or
councils need incentives to advocate and embrace greener policies.
5. More pollution: To be commercially viable, Viridors incinerator must run
at full capacity; when theres not enough waste locally (due to growing
recycling rates), it will be brought in from a wider area on even more diesel
lorries than proposed, adding significantly to both local road congestion
and air pollution.
You can stop the incinerator. Please show you care.

It is all too easy for the sharing to be forgotten, especially as dad is
generally not with the children as much as Mother is. SO it is as
important that Dad gets his day with the family as it is that Mum gets
her day, generally in March.
The memories of these occasions and capturing those bringing up
moments for the future are important too. So, if taking pictures,
remember to get dad in the picture with his terrors too, sorry his little
ones too - even if he is reluctant.
Top tips to your picture taking :-
Make sure the background is either clear or relevant to the picture.
Dad has shaved, if he normally does - one days stuble doesn;t
usually look good.
Ensure you frame the person with the occasion - ie full length if you
want to see the trousers, and crop the trouser, ie: half length
upwards if you want the facial expressions.
Ensure that there is sufficient light on the subject (Dad) unless you
are deliberately over exposing the background.
If you wish to shoot using our studio - we do rent out the studio too.

Volunteers needed for Summer Reading Challenge
Are you a reading fanatic aged 16+? Would you like to inspire younger children to
share your passion? Over the summer holidays Croydon Libraries will be running the
national Summer Reading Challenge on the theme of Creepy House, challenging
children aged 4-12 to read books, receiving rewards along the way. As a volunteer,
you can help library staff run the challenge by talking to children about their reading,
helping to run events or developing the website.
Sessions run daily, from 29 July until 7 September 2013. Volunteers are asked to
commit to at least 5 sessions during the period and are welcome to do plenty more!
The successful candidates will be subject to a DBS check. Opportunities are available
in all Croydon Libraries.
If you would like to be a volunteer, sign on to the Do-it.org.uk website, drop in to
Shirley Library for more information or email Fiona Phillips at
fiona.phillips@croydon.gov.uk

Green Thumb: Chapter 1
When one has little time to spare and does not want to spend it in the
garden looking after the lawn, one needs to seek help.
One side of ones garden is
healthy. Plants seem to die
on the other side, without
explanation. At least for the
moment, that is. One is
determined to find a reason.
One had spent time and a
lot of money on the lawn
without visible results so,
when one saw an advert in
the Croydon Guardian on 27
March 2013, one started thinking about calling Green Thumb Lawn
Treatment Service. Time flies but one managed, eventually, to fix the
appointment for a free Lawn analysis and no obligation quote. The
operator seemed to know what he was doing so one decided to have
a go and suscribed to the Complete Treatment Programme.
One is now waiting to see if the weeds begin to curl within 7-10 days
and the lawn changes in colour within a couple of weeks. The first
treatment is going to be the Early Summer Treatment in conjunction
with Water Conserver.
One has taken pictures the day before the treatment started and
decided to share them with the readers of SL.
One will keep the readers informed about the progress of the
treatment.
GreenThumb was founded in April 1986 in North Wales by Stephen
Waring. They have 450,000 customers nationwide and say that they
have seen every lawn problem and can always recommend a solution.
The nearest franchise is in New Addington. Phone 01689 849830.

Re: A232 Wickham Road / Monks Orchard Junction Improvement Works aka
e junction from hell in Shirley
Was it worth it? Yes, it
was worth it, for
pedestrians at least
but it is not a great
change for motorists
who, after all, pay
road tax.
It seems that cars
have to queue longer
to turn right from
Bridle Road into
Wickham Road, thus
increasing pollution
levels in the area. The
arrows are not helpful
and I have already had two nasty experiences with motorists coming from
Monks Orchard Road and turning right without due consideration. It is my
theory that the centre of the crossing looks wider than it really is, almost
naked. I took the picture below from my car, whilst waiting for the lights to
change. The traffic is heavy and the arrows will soon fade: it would have
perhaps been better
to have raised
arrows or a mini
roundabout to help
motorists negotiate
the junction. I really
feel that we will go
back to the decades
long problems.
I recently spoke to a
Shirley resident who
uses this junction on a
regular basis and he
commented as

follows: For the length of time the issue of this junction has been ongoing, I
am amazed there seems to have been very little practical thought given to its
realistic use:
when approaching
the junction from
Bridle Road to turn
right there is very
little clue as where
to position your
vehicle to ensure
that the trafc
wanting to go
straight on does
not get blocked due
to the pavement
line being moved
out;
the issue of trafc
wanting to cut
across in front when turning right from Bridle Road / Monks Orchard Road
into Wickham Road still exists;
the right lter light for trafc travelling from West Wickham can be
confusingly interpreted by trafc coming from Monks Orchard Road. I have
experienced vehicle users moving off when it is not their turn to do so!
What were the planners thinking by introducing circular arrows in the middle
of the junction? Line signage needs to be much clearer than this due to the
previous Monks Orchard Road island reference point having been removed
and the stop line having now been pushed back further north;
To sum up, my conclusion would be that for the benet gained in allowing
pedestrians to cross, this scheme has not solved the previous inherent
problems of this junction and, unfortunately, it appears to be a waste of
public money.
A few residents have also commented that the notices for the new layout of
the junction are not prominent enough, especially coming from Croydon
towards West Wickham. If one misses the slip road on the left, one must
either continue to the West Wickham roundabout or turn right into Oaks
Avenue, then right into Ash Road and right again into Bridle Road. Slightly
complicated, do you not think? They might just turn left where they shouldnt!
