Oedipus The King Readers Theatre

Objectives: Condense and rewrite the lines from the original text in a fresh modern context of your choice while maintaining plot, character development, conflict, irony and foreshadowing (as well as other rhetorical devices). Prepare an engaging oral presentation of your new script. Be sure to use the rubric on the back to guide your work. WRITTEN COMPONENTS: 1. Title you must create an original title for your portion of the play 2. Character List you must identify the original character names as well as the names that you have now given to the characters to fit your genre ASSIGNED LINES:

Group 1: Pre-story / Prologue ( 23- 34 [Enter Teiresias])


(4-6 members) Oedipus, Priest, Creon , Chorus *Oracle, Laius, Sphinx, Jocasta in the Theban Legend

Group 2: First Episode (34 39 [Enter Creon])


(4 5 members) Oedipus, Chorus, Teiresias

3. Summary you need to write a summary of the original portion of the play. Be sure to clearly identify rhetorical devices and theme development (Ex: dramatic irony, pride, ignorance, truth, awareness, fate or free will) 1-3 will be handed in together on the day before you present. They should not exceed two pages. Clearly identify all group members and the section of the play on which you are working together. 4. Modernized Script Your script should include evidence of understanding of script format including italics for stage directions, etc. Be sure to include cues for tone, facial expression, volume, movement and other non-verbal cues that help with meaning, plot or character development. You need a typed copy of your script to hand in before you present on the presentation date.

IF A GROUP MEMBER IS ABSENT FOR THE PRESENTATION, THE SCRIPT WILL BE USED BY A STAND IN SO THAT THE GROUP CAN STILL PRESENT.
