GETTING STARTED
ENGLISH LANGUAGE CENTRE ELC
Should you meet the academic admissions criteria, but do not meet the English language proficiency requirements, the ELC can help. The University of Manitoba can accept you on the condition that you successfully complete Level 5 of the Intensive Academic English Program (IAEP) at the English Language Centre. Depending on your initial placement level, the IAEP can take as little as one semester to complete. The IAEP prepares you for university studies by providing you with the language skills necessary to succeed academically. You will learn how to write research papers, learn new vocabulary, and deliver academic presentations, among many other skills. We accept students three times per year, allowing you the flexibility to achieve your goals and ensure you gain the confidence you need to succeed at university. What we offer:
CONDITIONAL ADMISSION
English Language Center students have the option of conditional admission, which means that they will be admitted to the University of Manitoba upon successful completion of the IAEP program.
EXCELLENT PREPARATORY CLASSES LED BY EXPERIENCED AND QUALIFIED INSTRUCTORS SMALLER CLASS SIZES
If you do not meet the University of Manitobas admission requirements, one of these programs can help you reach your goals. All programs listed are held on campus and coincide with the universitys academic schedule.
English Language Centre instructors have advanced degrees and have extensive experience teaching English for Academic Purposes (EAP). The average class size is 12 students per class, meaning each student receives individualized instruction.
Most programs offer students a chance to move up levels within the IAEP by writing placement tests. At the ELC, students who achieve an 80 percent average or more by the mid-term exam may also skip to the next highest level after the mid-term exam.
Our Student Advisor helps students with issues related to admissions, making the transition to university easier.
Social, cultural, and sports events, led by University of Manitoba students, can connect you to university facilities and Canadian students. Tuition fees are $3,600 CAD per semester. For more information please visit: umanitoba.ca/elc
1 Students who do not meet the minimum requirements for the IAEP on the placement test are encouraged to apply to the IEP to upgrade their English before returning to the IAEP. 10 INTERNATIONAL VIEWBOOK 2014
