WEST CONGRESS HOUSING

Situated just west of downtown Tucson, this multiuse project provides valuable amenities to the community. Four levels of residential units sit atop restaurant, commercial, gym and office space at the street level. To the south, a community garden welcomes pedestrians and ushers patrons out of below grade parking. Each residence enjoys a large private patio with a desert view, as well as a smaller community porch on the interior of the building atrium for daily interaction and reflection with neighbors.

THE COSMOS GALLERY

Simultaneously a planetarium and mineral museum, the project program follows an earth to sky progression. Materially, Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete functions as exterior cladding and interior finish; a material of the earth is transformed using modern technologies into a lightweight, high-tech construction solution. A central light well brings sky conditions directly into the museum when desirable. Thermally active surfaces integrate energy resources available from the University of Arizona central heating and refrigeration plant, thus reducing independent building loads.

THE CHICAGO SKY TORCH

Elevation of program allows for integration of a public park at grade while ensuring that solar access is maximized in consideration of Chicagos high annual heating load requirements. Residences, restaurant and office spaces are suspended from the top of a concrete compression core; views of the Chicago skyline are maximized while paticipating in the existing tower typology of the city.

EDU-CORR CINEMA
A film school located in the heart of the Los Angeles arts and industrial district, Edu-Corr connects pedestrian and bike transit along the 6th St. Viaduct from downtown and Boyle Heights into a campus that links into SCI-Arch. Educational and residential components are joined by a central courtyard, which is shaded by a PV canopy to supplement onsite energy needs. A western facade welcomes the community into the cinematic experience while eastern residences enjoy views out to a railside campus park.

TRIPOLI MEDIATHEQUE
Myriad underutiliized existing structures represent vast potential for renovation and reuse. A study in re-skinning structures yielded technical insight into the construction of cladding strategies, glazing systems and integration of services zones.

MONOCOQUE CANTILEVER
An exploration into the structural capabilites of stressed-skin construction and the manufacturing capabilities of digital fabrication, this study resulted in an ultra-lightweight cantilever that performed extraordinarily well under heavy loading conditions. Bending plywood was wrapped around an interior series of CNC routed ribs, which were held in place by 1/8 wooden dowels. The layering of the plywood was determined by the locations of the tensile and compressive forces present during testing.

THE HEAVY METAL ROCKER

Reinterpreting the traditional loveseat, this project utilizes a central connector to ensure mutual stability for both parties. As individual pieces, the bodies are in continual motion; joined, they create intimacy and harmony.
