Yellow Belt & Green Belt Six Sigma Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the yellow and green belt?


The Yellow Belt is a two day awareness that covers the methodology at a high level, The participant leaves with a good working knowledge of Lean Six Sigma to serve as a contributing project team member. The Green Belt is a longer time commitment and has a project portion. It covers the methodologies at a much more detailed level. The person leaves with the ability to run a project, but with some coaching. Six Sigma professionals exist at every level each with a different role to play. While implementations and roles may vary, here is a basic guide to who does what. Master Black Belt: Trains and coaches Black Belts and Green Belts. Functions more at the Six Sigma program level by developing key metrics and the strategic direction. Acts as an organizations Six Sigma technologist and internal consultant. Black Belt: Leads problem-solving projects. Trains and coaches project teams. Green Belt: Assists with data collection and analysis for Black Belt projects. Leads Green Belt projects or teams. Yellow Belt: Participates as a project team member. Reviews process improvements that support the project.

When are the GB courses available?


Public courses will be late spring 2011; need 5-9 participants. Custom courses will be scheduled based on the clients schedule

What is the cost?


$3900/participant for the public course.

How long will it take?


Total duration 3 months: This includes 8 full-day classes (56 contact hours), plus work on projects that can start when the classes begin. The program is over when the project has been completed, which is about a 3 month duration.

What are the requirements to complete the Green Belt Certification?


To complete the certification you must attend all eight days of training, make at least 70% on the written exam, and complete the simulation project by applying the appropriate tools through all 5 phases.

When is the written exam given?


The last day of the classroom training.

How may PDUs or CEUs are granted?


5.6 CEUs or 56 PDUs

For the Green Belt, do I need to have a project from my organization to work on?
No, for the public Green Belt Certification program the project will be a simulation. Real data will be given and each participant must work through the entire DMAIC methodology using the tools to demonstrate their ability to apply the knowledge. Theprojectmustbecompletedoutsideoftheclassroomsessions. Each participant will have two hours of coaching from the facilitator outside of the classroom sessions if needed.

How do the classroom training sessions and project simulation flow together? Why would it take three months?
Below is an example of the certification program including classroom training and time required for the project. Week One: Example: May 16th week Week Two Four Example: May 23-June 10 Training I: 4 Days of Classroom training Project Work I: Independent work on first part of the project (coaching if needed*) Training II: 4 Days of Classroom training and exam Note: Exam scores provided same day, retakes if needed will be discussed individually. A $20 fee will be applied for any exam retake. Project Work II Independently complete the second part of the project (coaching if needed*) Project Due. Projects can be turned in earlier, but no projects will be accepted after the predefined date. Certification notices will go out as projects are completed and graded.

*the maximum coaching time is two hours per participant. Optional and additional group coaching may be available if multiple participants need help with the same question. This will be determined by the instructor.
