strengths/weaknesses of participatory design

abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
STRENGTHS
>>>Community gaining power in design process >>>Assuring Social Justice; helping to restore an equitable balance of power >>>Helps community devlop skills: coordination and control >>>Designs role as a visual medium, designing as if people mattered >>>Restructuring from a bureaucratic model to a more unique community design imposed

WEAKNESSES
>>>When misapplied participation can reaffirm an inequitable status quo. >>>Misuderstanding of cultural context >>>Difficulty Attracting investors & government funding

design STRUCTURE
>>>Building the community before, during, and after construction. >>>Intelligent spacial thinking, community compromise.
urban massing

>>>Mixed-use, mixed income, flexible housing. >>>Distribution of private and shared space

mixed tenure gardens, shared urban parks, shared surfaces with minimal need for vehicular movement landscape wedge providing access to shared open green areas

>>>All the proposed dwellings are designed to Passivhaus standards, >>>Flexible and extendable so that inhabitants can develop >>>Ensuring high performance construction is maintained

MATERIALITY
primary routes of 18m tree-lined boulevards. Parking is on these streets and lie outside devlopment.

>>>Laminated spruce for structural walls. Birch Ply for internal fixed furniture. >>>External Cladding to be natural weathering timber, in varied widths and planned and rough sawn finishes.

arhus, denmark
>>>The ultimate goal to build a sustainable community that endures long after construction has completed is suggestively achieved by effective engagement with early adopter community members at the concept design stage, using web 2.0 technologies and online virtual environments to visualise design scenarios, whilst continuously growing the community before, during, and after construction.

An opportunity to extend a democratic design agenda, innovative housing ideas

SliderStudios response to the Europan 10 competition

design priorities
A building should: fit into site contextually, achieve universal accessibility, promote energy and resource efficiency, ensure healthy indoor environments, support physical safety and security, and meet high aesthetic standards R.F. Passivhaus standard for energy efficiency in a building, reducing its ecological footprint.[1] It results in ultra-low energy buildings that require little energy for space heating or cooling

democratic participation

>>>Design can benefit everyone, so in turn, everyone can help improve design. Embedding a design democracy in your project is both socially responsible and commercially sound

Participatory design as the catalyst for change in modern affordable housing

High quality design for all, irresoective of ones wealth. R.Feldman

SILDER STUDIO DEM. DESIGN TOOLS

Slider Studio has developed a set of democratic design tools to support collaberation and user feedback throughout a projects life >>>STICKY WORLD, YOUCANPLAN, HOUSING INFORMATION MODELLING, ESP, DoX

StickyWorld
StickyWorld is an innovate online program that allows users to enter Sticky Rooms where users are allowed to upload, review, and comment on pdfs, jpegs, 3D models, and YouTube videos of projects

StickyWorld ultimately helps achieve effective transparency by improving communication and knowledge exchange between your project stakeholders. This can include professionals working on projects across the design and construction industries as well as benefitting academics and students working on group projects and research. Likewise, there are countless uses for StickyWorld in alternative sectors, all centred on encouraging the collaborative review of visual media.

YouCanPlan
YouCanPlan is a design-focused consultation and engagement tool enabling local people to better understand design proposals for their area.

Displayed in 3D interactive websites, downloadable 3D virtual environments, gaming engines, and physical interactive models, YouCanPlan promotes online competitions, design/build exhibitions, and capture value community feedback which then can be written into statements of community involvement.

Housing Information Modelling

Housing Information Modeling Toolkit (HIM) is our solution for removing waste in the housing design process.

The Housing Information Modelling Toolkit is a program that can be downloaded for architects and urban designers to alleviate the design process in doing community design projects. This program creates a database or library of housing styles, types, and smart diagrams and coverts these diagrams in three dimensional models. Combining the geometric and spatial data of the individual house or apartment unit with other relevant parameters such as type, tenure and cost, the resultant models are then assembled automatically comprising a collection of all the different properties within a site, as well as area data for development land and infrastructure.

ESP
Enabled Self Procurement (ESP) is a dual method of social engagement and technical simulation for organising self build housing at a volume scale.

The ESP tool allows Slider to offer local authorities, developers and Community Land Trusts/owners a new way to build better housing in the UK by enabling development opportunity for all people. ESP encourages its adopter to work with local communities to develop planning applications through the organisation of design charettes alongside other architects and design professionals.

DoX
DoX is an interactive program that helps architects design enhanced, logical, and systematic approaches for envelope and cladding design layouts

DoX in other words allows for architects and designers to design various cladding and envelope desings for their projects to ultimately speed up the design process. This program further more allows the user adjust the panels and the pattern in very specific ways such as size and number.
