12. Re-create the story

Level: B1 C1 adaptable to various languages Objectives:
- learning the use of past tenses - time/ tense sequence (B2/C1) - direct/indirect speech - linking words - tone and style used in storytelling - written language vs. oral language

Time: 25 minutes Materials: - sticky notes/ straps of paper containing information extracted from the story Description: The trainee should use all the given straps of paper with information from the original
story and build-up the original one. Afterwards, the trainee should make a short oral summary of the story he created. The trainer takes notes on several expressions/ words/ structures that the student uses when talking.

Then, the trainer asks the trainee to underline some of the key expressions and linking words that he used in the text. Afterwards, the trainer and the trainee compare their notes. The purpose of all this is to make the trainee aware of the differences between direct-indirect speech, oral language vs. written language. Note: the straps do not contain the whole story; they contain essential information for the development of the plot. The students can be creative, but they must use all the resources they have.

Variation: this activity can be adapted for lower level students (B1) by using comic book series where
there are no lines; the student can fill-in the lines the characters say in the comic book and later make the summary of the whole story. This way, for B1 students the difference between present tenses and past tenses becomes clearer.
