ME 410 L Scenario report grading guidelines

Fall 2013-14

Technical completeness: does the approach indicate a comprehensive method to arrive at answers to the questions posed in the scenario? /20 /10 The analysis to the problem is presented in a way that it is clear how one will arrive at answers for all the questions posed in the scenario. All necessary equations are shown. A table listing all the variables which need to be determined and how they will be determined is complete. For example: Variable Enthalpy at state 5 Method of Determination The enthalpy will be derived by measuring temperature and pressure at state 5 and looking it up from a table of thermodynamic properties Pressure will be read from an analog pressure gage located at position 4, and it will be assumed that the flow is frictionless between position 4 and 5P5=P4 This will be read from a thermocouple sensor located upstream of the throttle valve

The assumptions in the analysis are identified. For example: We assume that there is no pressure drop in the steam line, therefore the pressure at state 5 is equal to that at state 4. This is a fair assumption given the low average flow velocity in the steam line. The experimental procedure is well-specified. e.g. what will be held constant, what will be varied, and why. For example: We operated the device with the expansion valve fully open and varied the load by increasing or decreasing the spring tension on the band brake. A total of 5 different loads were applied. Prior to each set of measurements, we ensured that steady state conditions were reached by monitoring the temperature at the inlet of the condenser. Each measurement was be repeated three times to ensure that obtained data were reliable. Correct application of theory in deriving the approach.

Technical quality: how good was the approach/how good were the conclusions? /10 /10 A minimal number of assumptions was made/the assumptions made were justifiable The available equipment and measurements were exploited to their fullest - the experimental procedure captures the phenomena under question - available measurements are well-utilized Correct and justifiable conclusions were drawn based on your calculations and approach. The conclusions are strongly supported with data. Alternative interpretations of the data are given, as are reasons for rejecting them.

Presentation/argumentation: is it logically and clearly presented? /5 The overall recommendations of the consultant flow naturally from the text. The reader is not required to jump from one part of the report to another to understand a) what the consultant did, or b) why the consultant did it. The reader is guided with visual cues, useful headings, and graphics as appropriate. The argument is clear. The evidence is clearly presented. The logic is sound and well argued. There is an economy of words. Charts, tables, graphs are thoughtfully prepared, in accordance with the good graphics handout
